Choose RAM and operating system carefully at purchase: the memory cannot be upgraded later, while internal storage can be replaced within Lenovo’s stated limits or expanded with microSD.
What the Lenovo Legion Go S is
Lenovo announced the Legion Go S at CES 2025 as an 8-inch handheld gaming computer. It is built around a 16:10 WUXGA touchscreen, AMD’s Z-series handheld processors, fast LPDDR5-family memory, a 55.5Wh battery and two USB4 ports. Lenovo offers both Windows 11 Home and officially licensed SteamOS configurations, so the same hardware family can serve different software preferences.

The important buying decision is not simply “which Legion Go S?” It is which processor, memory capacity, operating system and storage combination fits your games and your willingness to upgrade. The RAM is soldered to the motherboard, leaving no later capacity upgrade. Storage is more flexible because the system has one M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot, although Lenovo’s listed configurations top out at 1TB.

Processor and memory choices
Ryzen Z2 Go models
The 8ARP1 PSREF lists the Ryzen Z2 Go with four cores and eight threads. These models use either 16GB or 32GB of soldered memory. Depending on the configuration, Lenovo specifies LPDDR5-6400 or LPDDR5X-6400. This is the lower-tier processor option in the Legion Go S range, intended for buyers who want the form factor and display without selecting the most powerful chip offered.
Ryzen Z1 Extreme models
The 8APU1 PSREF lists the Ryzen Z1 Extreme with eight cores and 16 threads, paired with LPDDR5X-7500 memory. It uses the same basic M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 storage arrangement. The additional cores and threads make this the configuration to consider for demanding games, heavier background tasks or longer expected ownership, but real game performance still depends on resolution, graphics settings, power mode and the game itself.
Why the RAM decision matters
Both 16GB and 32GB memory options are soldered. There are no SO-DIMM or other user-accessible memory slots, and Lenovo marks the memory as not upgradable in both PSREF families. Select capacity when ordering. Sixteen gigabytes can be appropriate for a focused handheld library, while 32GB gives more headroom for modern games, texture-heavy settings, browser tabs, launchers and Windows background processes. The choice cannot be corrected later by opening the chassis.

The Legion Go S uses an 8-inch 16:10 IPS touchscreen with 1920×1200 resolution. The 8ARP1 specification rates it at 500 nits, 100% sRGB coverage and a 48–120Hz variable refresh-rate range. Variable refresh can align the panel’s refresh behavior with changing frame rates, which is useful on a handheld where performance and power limits fluctuate.

The 1920×1200 native resolution gives more vertical pixels than a conventional 1920×1080 panel, but rendering every game at native resolution is not mandatory. Lower in-game resolution or an upscaling mode can reduce GPU load and extend play time. Touch input is useful for the Windows desktop and games that expose touch controls; a controller or mouse remains more practical for many traditional PC interfaces.
Windows 11 Home versus SteamOS
Operating system is the biggest software distinction between Legion Go S versions. Lenovo describes the SteamOS edition as an officially licensed SteamOS handheld with access to the Steam Store and Steam Library, cloud saves and Remote Play. Windows 11 Home is the general-purpose PC option, supporting ordinary Windows applications and multiple PC game launchers.
| Consideration | Windows 11 Home | SteamOS |
|---|---|---|
| Primary interface | Standard Windows desktop plus Lenovo’s handheld controls and software | Console-style Steam interface designed around the Steam library |
| Game stores | Supports Windows-compatible launchers and stores; each launcher’s own requirements apply | Full Steam Store and Steam Library access; non-Steam launchers may require additional compatibility steps and do not have identical support |
| Applications | Broad Windows software compatibility, including productivity tools and peripherals | Best suited to Steam gaming, Remote Play and software that works through SteamOS compatibility layers |
| Cloud and remote features | Depends on the game or launcher | Lenovo specifically lists cloud saves and Remote Play as supported SteamOS features |
| Best fit | Players with several PC stores, Windows-only software or a desktop-like workflow | Players who want a focused Steam console experience and primarily use Steam |
“SteamOS support” should not be read as a promise that every Windows launcher, anti-cheat system or game behaves identically. Check the compatibility status of the particular titles and services you use. Conversely, Windows offers flexibility but generally involves more desktop setup, updates and launcher management than a console-style Steam interface.

Internal SSD
Lenovo specifies one M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slot. The 2242 dimension is essential: it refers to a drive approximately 22mm wide and 42mm long. A common M.2 2280 desktop or laptop SSD is longer and is not the correct drop-in format. Lenovo’s listed Legion Go S configurations use 512GB or 1TB drives and state support up to 1TB.

Because there is only one internal slot, replacing the existing drive is an either-or operation rather than adding a second SSD. Plan how to copy or reinstall the operating system before removing the original drive. Confirm the exact Legion Go S model and Lenovo service documentation before buying a replacement; the 8ARP1 and 8APU1 PSREF documents identify the same basic 2242 PCIe 4.0 approach, but regional configurations can differ.
microSD expansion
The built-in microSD reader adds removable capacity without opening the chassis. It is convenient for a game library, media files or moving data between devices. Treat it as supplemental storage rather than a substitute for the internal NVMe drive when loading games that benefit from the fastest access. Card performance, capacity and compatibility depend on the specific card and game.
How to replace the Legion Go S SSD
An SSD replacement is the main hardware upgrade available, but it requires opening the handheld and handling its system board. Use this sequence as a planning checklist and follow the service instructions for your exact model.

- Back up your data. Copy saves, screenshots and personal files. If the original drive contains the operating system, prepare either a full-drive clone or the appropriate Windows or SteamOS recovery and installation media before disassembly.
- Shut down completely. Power off the Legion Go S rather than leaving it in sleep mode, disconnect the charger and remove external accessories. Work on a clean, static-safe surface.
- Open the enclosure according to Lenovo’s service documentation. Use the specified tools, keep screws organized and avoid pulling on cables or forcing clips. Exact fastener locations and disassembly details can vary by model.
- Disconnect power as instructed. A service guide may require disconnecting the battery before touching the storage assembly. Follow that guide rather than probing components while the system is energized.
- Remove the existing 2242 drive and install the replacement. Transfer any retaining hardware exactly as documented. Insert the drive at the correct angle, press it down and secure it without overtightening.
- Reassemble and restore software. Close the chassis, reconnect the charger and boot from your prepared clone or recovery media. Install drivers, firmware and Lenovo utilities required by your operating system.
- Verify the result. Confirm that the new capacity appears in the operating system, run updates and test sleep, charging, controls, Wi-Fi and game launches before deleting the old backup.
Opening the device can affect warranty coverage if it is done contrary to Lenovo’s terms. If you are not comfortable with board-level handling or reinstalling an operating system, use an authorized service provider.

Battery life and charging
The Legion Go S has a 55.5Wh battery. Lenovo quotes Super Rapid Charge from 0–30% in 10 minutes, 0–70% in 30 minutes and 0–100% in 80 minutes. Those figures describe charging behavior under Lenovo’s stated conditions; they are not a guarantee that every charger, cable, temperature or regional configuration will produce the same result.
Lenovo’s PSREF gives maximum local-video figures of 15.4 hours for the 8ARP1 configuration and 14.5 hours for the 8APU1 configuration. These are laboratory or benchmark claims for local video playback, not gaming-runtime promises. Games normally draw substantially more power, and brightness, refresh rate, processor mode, wireless activity and frame-rate limits all change endurance. Use a performance profile and refresh-rate limit appropriate to the game when battery life matters.

Two USB-C USB4 ports are rated up to 40Gbps and support DisplayPort 1.4 video output. Lenovo lists USB Power Delivery from 65W to 100W and a 65W USB-C adapter option. This combination can support compatible docks, external monitors, storage and charging accessories, subject to the dock, cable, display and charger’s own specifications.

For a desk setup, check the dock’s power-delivery rating and video-output requirements rather than assuming any USB-C hub is equivalent. A charger below the handheld’s preferred input can reduce charging speed or limit performance while playing. DisplayPort 1.4 capability also does not guarantee a particular monitor resolution or refresh rate through every dock; those limits depend on the dock and display chain.

Launch pricing and availability context
Lenovo’s CES 2025 announcement gave these expected US starting prices:
| Launch reference | Expected US starting price | Availability stated at announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Windows model | $729.99 | January 2025 |
| Additional Windows configurations | $599.99 | May 2025 |
| SteamOS model | $499.99 | May 2025 |
These were expected launch prices, not permanent prices. Current pricing, promotions, regional taxes, stock and exact specifications should be checked with Lenovo or the retailer at the time of purchase. A lower starting price may correspond to a different processor, memory capacity, storage size or operating system.
Which Legion Go S configuration makes sense?
Choose the processor first
Select Ryzen Z1 Extreme when you prioritize the higher core and thread count, LPDDR5X-7500 memory and demanding games. Consider Ryzen Z2 Go when the lower-tier configuration meets your performance target and you prefer to allocate more of the budget to storage or accessories. Do not compare processor names without checking the complete model number and power configuration.
Choose memory at purchase
Buy 32GB if you expect to keep many launchers and applications open, play memory-hungry games or keep the handheld for several years. Choose 16GB only when you are comfortable with the limitation, because the soldered design prevents a later upgrade.
Choose the operating system around your library
Windows is the safer choice for a mixed PC library, Windows applications and launchers with specific compatibility requirements. SteamOS is attractive when most of your games are in Steam and you want cloud saves, Remote Play and a console-like interface. Verify individual game and anti-cheat compatibility before committing to SteamOS.
Budget for the storage you actually need
Modern games can consume much of a 512GB drive after accounting for the operating system and updates. A 1TB factory drive avoids immediate replacement. If you choose 512GB, plan either an M.2 2242 replacement within Lenovo’s stated support or a microSD card for additional capacity.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Buying the wrong SSD length: M.2 2242 is required; M.2 2280 is not a drop-in replacement.
- Assuming RAM can be added: all listed memory is soldered and marked not upgradable.
- Treating battery estimates as gaming results: 14.5- and 15.4-hour figures are local-video maximums under stated test conditions.
- Assuming every launcher works the same on SteamOS: Steam access is comprehensive, but non-Steam launchers and anti-cheat systems can require separate compatibility checks.
- Using an underspecified dock or charger: verify USB4, DisplayPort, cable and USB-PD ratings together.
- Replacing the SSD without a recovery plan: clone the old drive or prepare installation media before opening the handheld.
Bottom line for buyers
The Legion Go S is best understood as a configurable handheld PC rather than one fixed specification. Its strongest fundamentals are the large 8-inch 120Hz touchscreen, two USB4 ports, Wi-Fi 6E and a replaceable 2242 NVMe drive. The permanent decision is memory: select 16GB or 32GB before purchase. The practical software decision is Windows for broad PC flexibility versus SteamOS for a Steam-centered console experience. Match those two choices to your library first, then choose the processor and storage capacity that fit your budget.
