Some IdeaPads have a Novo button that can enter a boot menu, but it is not a universal power switch. If the laptop is asleep, a keyboard or mouse may wake it; if it is fully shut down, that usually will not start it. Emergency-reset holes and power-drain steps reset or troubleshoot a machine—they are not proven substitutes for the power button.
Identify your model before trying a control
Find the model name or machine type on the laptop’s label, in its documentation, or through Lenovo Support. Then open the user guide for that exact model and check its diagrams for a Novo control or emergency-reset hole. These features vary by model and generation. Do not probe an unmarked pinhole: it may serve another purpose.

If the display is dark because the laptop is sleeping or hibernating, move the mouse or press a key. Lenovo notes that wake behavior can depend on the computer’s ACPI configuration; some systems respond only to a particular key. This only helps when the laptop is in a supported sleep state with wake enabled. It does not establish a way to cold-start a fully shut-down laptop.

Use Novo only if your IdeaPad has it
On some IdeaPads, Novo is a small button or pinhole, often near the power button or on a side edge, and may be marked with a backward-arrow-like icon. Confirm its location in your exact user guide before using it. Lenovo’s guidance says to press the Novo pinhole gently with an unfolded paper clip or a similar pointed object.
On supported computers, pressing Novo can turn the computer on and enter Boot mode; from there, you can choose Boot Menu. This is a model-specific way to reach boot options, not a guarantee of normal startup and not a fix for a failed motherboard or power circuit. If the menu appears, choose the appropriate boot option for your goal.

Know what an emergency reset can—and cannot—do
Lenovo’s no-power troubleshooting guidance says that on systems with an internal battery and an emergency-reset hole, you can disconnect power and use the hole to reset the system, then reconnect power and try to start it. Some systems do not have this hole, so consult the product manual first. The reset is a troubleshooting step; it is not itself a normal power-on control.

For example, Lenovo’s 2025 ThinkPad P1/T1g guide describes model-dependent steps: use an emergency-reset hole where provided; for models without one, its FAQ describes holding the power button for about seven seconds as part of a reset sequence, followed by restarting with AC connected. Another FAQ sequence describes a 30-second residual-power drain. These steps still involve the power button or a later start attempt, so they do not provide a general way to start a laptop when that button cannot be used. Follow your own model’s manual rather than transferring those timings.

Choose the route that matches the laptop’s state

Check power, then escalate a suspected switch fault
- Connect power: Plug the adapter directly into a working wall outlet. If the battery may be discharged, let the laptop charge for several minutes before trying again.
- Disconnect peripherals: Unplug attached devices while troubleshooting, then follow the power and reset steps in your model’s Lenovo guide.
- Use only documented reset controls: If the guide confirms an emergency-reset hole or Novo control, follow its instructions. Do not assume a pinhole has either function.
- Contact Lenovo Support if the problem remains: Lenovo advises contacting support if a reset works but the power-button issue persists. Its no-power guidance says: “If the reset works, then there may be an issue with the power button. Contact Support.”
Before buying a replacement switch or opening the case, check the service manual for your exact model. Repair rules are not the same across Lenovo laptops: for example, the ThinkPad Z13/Z16 guide reviewed here says parts not listed as customer-replaceable, including the built-in battery, must be handled by a Lenovo-authorized repair facility or technician. That guidance is specific to those models; check your own documentation.
