If your Lenovo laptop keyboard seems locked, first identify what has stopped working: all keys, only certain keys, or the top row’s function and hotkey behavior. Those symptoms point to different fixes. Start with the model-supported FnLock shortcut for a changed top row, review Windows 11 keyboard accessibility settings for missed or repeated input, and use the On-Screen Keyboard if you need to keep typing while you troubleshoot.
Identify what “locked” means
Check whether letters and numbers type normally, whether only a few physical keys fail, or whether the top row performs a different action than expected. A keyboard that types but has changed top-row behavior usually needs a function-mode check; missed or inconsistent keystrokes may relate to Windows settings; keys that do not type at all call for further isolation.

If the top-row keys act differently, check FnLock
On Lenovo models that support FnLock, pressing Fn + Esc toggles the priority between the F1–F12 functions and supported top-row hotkeys such as volume or brightness. Some supported models show FnLock status with an indicator on the Esc key. This changes which action is primary; it does not unlock every key. The shortcut and available modes depend on the product, so confirm them in the guide for your exact Lenovo model before changing BIOS settings. Lenovo’s Fn and FnLock guidance and its function-key-mode support information describe model-dependent behavior.
If keystrokes are missed or repeated, review Windows settings
In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Check whether Filter Keys or another keyboard option is enabled and whether it matches your needs. Filter Keys adjusts keyboard sensitivity and can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes; Sticky Keys changes how multi-key shortcuts are entered. Do not switch off an accessibility feature you rely on just to test a keyboard problem. Microsoft’s Windows 11 keyboard accessibility guidance explains these settings.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard while diagnosing
If the physical keyboard cannot enter a password or search, Windows includes an On-Screen Keyboard you can operate with a mouse or another pointing device. After signing in, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on On-Screen Keyboard. At the sign-in screen, select Accessibility in the lower-right corner, then choose On-Screen Keyboard. The OSK is a typing workaround, not a repair for a faulty physical key. Microsoft’s On-Screen Keyboard instructions cover both entry points.

Work out whether the problem is a key, app, setting, or driver
- Test the affected key in Notepad. If it works there but not in one application, check that application’s settings before assuming the keyboard is broken.
- Compare physical input with the On-Screen Keyboard. If the OSK can enter the same character but a physical key cannot, the issue is more likely specific to the physical keyboard or its configuration.
- Review keyboard shortcuts and enhancements. Check relevant Windows or Lenovo settings rather than changing unrelated options.
- Check the keyboard driver. Follow Lenovo’s troubleshooting guidance for your device and Windows installation; a driver check cannot guarantee a fix for physical damage.
Lenovo’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance includes these types of checks and directs users to further assistance if they do not resolve the problem.
If an external keyboard also fails, check its connection and power
For a separate USB or wireless keyboard, confirm that it is connected and powered. Try another USB port and connect directly to the laptop instead of through a hub. Inspect the cable, charge the keyboard or check its batteries, and look for dirt or debris obstructing keys. These are general external-keyboard checks, not repair instructions for the laptop’s built-in keyboard. Microsoft’s keyboard troubleshooting steps provide additional guidance.

When to contact Lenovo
If the built-in keyboard still fails after the relevant settings, key, and driver checks, contact Lenovo support with the laptop’s exact product or model information. A persistent fault may need model-specific service; there is no universal BIOS reset or driver reinstall that can be expected to fix a damaged keyboard. Lenovo’s troubleshooting page offers further assistance when its checks do not solve the issue.
