Whether it is a good buy depends on the exact configuration: the screen may be IPS or OLED, memory and storage vary, and a digital pen is not included with every SKU. The tested IPS display’s limited color coverage and the value of choosing 16GB rather than 8GB deserve particular attention.
What the Flex 5 14IRU8 is—and why the exact SKU matters
The 14IRU8 is Lenovo’s Intel-based 14-inch Flex 5 generation, with 13th-generation Intel U-series processor options. Its 360-degree hinge lets it work as a conventional laptop, tent, stand or tablet. The screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1920 × 1200 resolution, but Lenovo lists both IPS and OLED versions, so the model name alone does not tell you which display a listing includes.

Processor, memory, storage, panel and included accessories can also vary by region and configuration. Lenovo’s 14IRU8 specifications reference is the best starting point for identifying the platform’s options, but check the seller’s listing for the actual SKU. Lenovo states that it “reserves the right to change specifications or other product information without notice.”

| Panel option | Lenovo-listed specification | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| IPS | 300 nits; 45% NTSC | Suitable for ordinary work, browsing and video, but the stated color coverage is limited for color-critical editing. |
| OLED | 400 nits; 100% DCI-P3 | The stronger listed option for richer color; confirm that the specific listing actually has OLED. |
Notebookcheck’s review of an IPS-equipped i5-1335U test unit measured an average maximum brightness of 315.6 cd/m² and 58% sRGB coverage. Those measurements describe that reviewed panel, not every 14IRU8. They support treating the IPS version as an everyday screen rather than assuming it is suitable for color-sensitive photography or design work. Consumer Reports also notes touchscreen friction and fingerprints on its tested configuration.

How well does it handle everyday work?
Notebookcheck judged its i5-1335U, Iris Xe test unit adequate for common productivity and multimedia tasks, while finding it less suited to heavier image editing, video editing and simulations. Consumer Reports likewise describes productivity performance as adequate and reports weaker results in more demanding creative or compute workloads on its separately tested i5-1335U, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD configuration.
That makes the Flex 5 a reasonable fit for documents, web research, video calls, streaming and ordinary multitasking. It is a less convincing choice if sustained creative work or compute-heavy applications are central to your routine; do not assume every 14IRU8 listing will perform identically, since CPU and memory configurations differ.

Is 8GB of memory enough, and can it be upgraded?
Memory deserves attention before purchase. Notebookcheck warned that its reviewed 8GB configuration did not have a simple path to a 16GB upgrade. Do not count on adding memory later unless the exact SKU’s service documentation confirms that option. For a laptop intended to handle several years of browser tabs and simultaneous apps, choosing 16GB at purchase is the more cautious decision when the price difference is reasonable.
The review criticized the 16GB model’s price premium at the time, but that was a 2023 market observation, not a current price comparison. Current prices and stock for particular configurations are not established here; compare live listings in your region and make sure you are comparing like-for-like CPU, RAM, storage and panel options.

How long does the battery last?
Published results vary because the reviewers used different test methods and configurations. Keep each figure tied to its test rather than treating it as a guaranteed day of use.
| Source and test unit | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Notebookcheck, 2023; i5-1335U, Iris Xe, 52.5Wh battery | 9 hours 48 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing | An independent result for that review unit and test method. |
| Consumer Reports; separate tested configuration | 15 hours of light web browsing; 11.5 hours of heavier 4K video playback | Its own test results; the publication year is not visible in the cited summary. |
| Lenovo PSREF; manufacturer maximum claims | OLED: up to 9 hours MobileMark and 13 hours local 1080p video. IPS: up to 10 hours MobileMark and 14 hours local 1080p video. | Manufacturer claims under the stated test conditions, not independent mixed-use guarantees. Lenovo says actual use varies. |
The independent results make the battery look credible for everyday use, but workload, brightness and panel configuration matter. Lenovo lists a 52.5Wh battery for the platform; actual runtime will depend on the unit and how it is used.

What ports and accessories does it have?
For a thin convertible, the port selection is a practical strength. Lenovo lists a Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 port supporting up to 40Gbps, Power Delivery and DisplayPort, alongside HDMI 1.4b, two USB-A ports, a card reader and a headset jack. There is no built-in Ethernet, so wired-network access requires an adapter or dock.

Lenovo lists two digital pen options as well as a no-pen option. Is it comfortable to carry and use?
Lenovo’s platform figures start at 1.50kg for metal models and 1.55kg for plastic models; the exact weight depends on the unit. Consumer Reports describes the build and ergonomics favorably overall, while flagging the touchscreen’s tendency to show fingerprints and an awkwardly placed or labeled power button. These are observations about its tested configuration rather than a guarantee that every regional variant has identical details.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the 14IRU8 is worth buying
- Consider it for study, office productivity, browsing and entertainment if you value a convertible touchscreen and the ports suit your setup.
- Prefer an OLED SKU if richer color is important; verify the panel rather than relying on the 14IRU8 name.
- Favor 16GB memory for more comfortable multitasking and because a simple upgrade path is not established for the reviewed 8GB configuration.
- Look elsewhere or check carefully if you need dependable color-critical editing, sustained demanding creative performance, built-in Ethernet or an included pen.
- Compare exact listings by CPU, panel, memory, SSD, pen inclusion and regional warranty. Current price and availability depend on the live listing.
