Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 Backlit Keyboard: What Each Model Actually Supports

Sometimes. “Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14” is a product family, not one fixed configuration. Lenovo’s specifications show that the 14ARE05, 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 generations can have different keyboard-backlight options. The 14ARE05 specification page records a no-support configuration, while 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 documentation lists both backlit and non-backlit keyboards.

To know whether a particular laptop has an illuminated keyboard, identify its complete model/type or product number and match that identifier to Lenovo’s specification page or the seller’s exact listing. Do not rely on “IdeaPad 5 14” alone.

The short answer: the exact model decides

The 14-inch IdeaPad 5 name covers several generations and regional configurations. Keyboard backlighting is one of the components Lenovo may change between those configurations, alongside keyboard language and layout. Two laptops sold as an IdeaPad 5 14 can therefore look similar while having different keyboards.

Lenovo’s Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) pages provide the most useful model-level evidence. They do not establish one universal specification for every IdeaPad 5 14. The complete identifier—such as 14ARE05, 14ITL05 or 14ALC05—must be checked first, followed by the individual part or machine type where available.

What Lenovo’s specifications say for each 14-inch generation

Model or generation Keyboard evidence in Lenovo documentation What a buyer should conclude
IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 The PSREF keyboard section shows “LED backlight” and “No support.” The specification page was last modified 11 October 2021. The cited configuration is recorded as not supporting a backlight. Because the page displays both terms in its keyboard-backlight field, verify the exact type or part number rather than applying the entry to every 14ARE05 machine.
IdeaPad 5 14ITL05 Lenovo documentation describes both LED-backlit and non-backlit keyboard possibilities. A PSREF PDF is dated 17 April 2023. The family name does not tell you whether an individual 14ITL05 is illuminated. The precise configuration and market listing are decisive.
IdeaPad 5 14ALC05 The product PSREF lists backlit and non-backlit choices and several keyboard language/layout variants. Lenovo marks the product page as withdrawn. Availability and keyboard type can differ by configuration and region. Confirm the exact listing or physical unit before buying.

These entries are product specifications, not a statistical survey of all laptops sold. They show configuration variation, not a percentage of IdeaPad 5 14 units that have backlighting.

Why “IdeaPad 5 14” is not enough information

Generational changes

The suffix identifies a platform generation. 14ARE05, 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 are not interchangeable specification labels, even though all use the IdeaPad 5 14 family name. Lenovo can offer a different keyboard option when the processor platform, production run or target market changes.

Regional keyboard layouts

The 14ALC05 PSREF includes multiple language and layout entries. A keyboard can therefore be sold with different printed legends and a different backlight option depending on the market. A photograph of a US layout does not prove that a similarly named unit in another country has the same keyboard.

Part-number variation inside one generation

Retail listings often shorten a product name. The full machine type, product number or part number is what ties the keyboard to a particular build. If a listing gives only “IdeaPad 5 14” and a processor name, treat the backlight claim as unconfirmed until the seller supplies the complete identifier or an explicit specification.

How to identify your exact laptop

Use more than one of the following records. The goal is to obtain the complete model/type or product number, not just the marketing name.

  1. Check the device label. Look on the underside, inside the regulatory label area or on the original box for a model/type, product number or machine-type code. Record every letter and digit.
  2. Review the purchase record. An invoice or order confirmation may include a longer part number than the retailer’s headline. Preserve that full code.
  3. Open Lenovo’s support lookup. Enter the recorded identifier and select the matching IdeaPad 5 14 generation. Do not select a similar-looking result solely because the screen size matches.
  4. Open the matching PSREF or specification document. Find the keyboard section and read the keyboard-backlight line. Check the language/layout entry as well.
  5. Compare the physical machine. Confirm that the chassis, port arrangement and keyboard layout correspond to the document. If the identifier and physical machine disagree, ask the seller or Lenovo support to resolve the discrepancy.

Lenovo’s documentation carries an important qualification: “Lenovo reserves the right to change specifications or other product information without notice.” A current listing and the identifier on your unit should therefore take priority over a generic search result or an old photograph.

Checking a laptop before you buy it

Require an explicit backlight statement

If an illuminated keyboard is essential, look for wording such as “backlit keyboard” or “LED-backlit keyboard” attached to the exact model or part number. “IdeaPad 5 14,” “premium keyboard” or a stock image is not enough. Ask the seller to confirm the keyboard specification in writing when the page is ambiguous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the complete code

Compare the code in the advertisement with the code in Lenovo’s PSREF. A listing that says 14ITL05 but omits its full type may still represent either a backlit or non-backlit configuration. The same caution applies to 14ALC05, where language and layout entries also differ.

Check the keyboard language

Make sure the layout suits your region and work. A backlight does not compensate for an unexpected language layout. The 14ALC05 documentation demonstrates why both attributes belong in the comparison.

Ask for a real photograph when necessary

A photograph can help confirm key legends and layout, but it is not conclusive by itself: backlighting may be switched off, the image may be a stock photo, or a replacement keyboard may have been installed. Use the photograph as supporting evidence after matching the identifier.

Checking an IdeaPad 5 14 you already own

Inspect the keys in a dim room

With the laptop powered on, reduce surrounding light and look at the key legends. An actual backlit keyboard normally illuminates the legends or the area around them when its backlight is enabled. If nothing lights, first confirm that the model specification supports a backlight; a non-backlit keyboard cannot be enabled through software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the exact user guide

Find the user guide for your generation through Lenovo’s support documentation and search for the keyboard-backlight control. Lenovo’s support listing includes a User Guide for the IdeaPad 5 14IIL05 and 14ARE05 family dated 12 October 2020. That documentation should be treated as generation-specific.

Do not assume one universal shortcut

The available evidence does not establish one keyboard-light shortcut for the entire IdeaPad 5 14 family. A key combination shown in a guide for one generation may not apply to another. Follow the guide for your exact model and use the keycap markings on your own keyboard rather than copying a shortcut from an unrelated IdeaPad.

Separate a control problem from missing hardware

If the PSREF says the configuration is non-backlit, Windows settings or a driver reinstall will not add lighting. If the PSREF confirms a backlit option but the light does not respond, check the exact user guide, keyboard legends and Lenovo support instructions before assuming the keyboard is defective.

How to read Lenovo’s backlight wording

PSREF tables can present several options in one field. For 14ARE05, the keyboard-backlight row includes both “LED backlight” and “No support.” That wording should not be simplified into a claim that every 14ARE05 has a light or that none do. It is evidence that the page covers configurations with different support states; the individual machine’s type or part number is needed to select the applicable one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For 14ITL05 and 14ALC05, Lenovo explicitly documents backlit and non-backlit possibilities. In practical terms, those generations require a configuration check rather than a family-level yes or no. A seller’s omission is not proof of either option.

Comparing two listings safely

When two advertisements appear to describe the same laptop, compare them in this order:

Comparison item Question to ask Why it matters
Complete model/type or part number Do both listings identify the same full code? The family name alone permits multiple keyboard configurations.
Backlight wording Does the specification explicitly say backlit, LED-backlit or no support? “IdeaPad 5 14” does not establish the feature.
Keyboard layout Are the language and key legends suitable for your region? Layout variants are documented, particularly for 14ALC05.
Market and seller Is the unit intended for your country, and does the seller confirm the configuration? Regional availability and options can differ.
Documentation date Which PSREF or guide is being used? The 14ARE05 page was modified in 2021, the 14IIL05/14ARE05 guide listing is from 2020, and the 14ITL05 PSREF PDF is dated 17 April 2023.

Questions to answer before ordering

Does the processor identify the keyboard?

No. A processor description can help distinguish generations, but it is not a substitute for the full type or part number. Retailers may pair similar processor language with different keyboard options, and Lenovo’s tables document variation within the named generations.

Can a product title that says “LED keyboard” be trusted?

Only when the statement is tied to the exact advertised configuration. Save the listing, ask the seller to confirm the complete code, and compare it with the matching PSREF. A generic title or image can describe another stock-keeping unit.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does “No support” mean the light is disabled?

In a PSREF keyboard-backlight field, “No support” indicates that the listed configuration does not support a backlight. It is different from a supported backlight that is merely switched off. Verify that the row belongs to your exact type before drawing that conclusion.

Does withdrawn status mean every 14ALC05 is unusable?

No. The 14ALC05 product page being marked withdrawn does not determine the keyboard fitted to an existing unit. It does mean current availability and standard configuration should not be assumed; inspect the actual machine and its identifier.

Used and refurbished buying checks

Older IdeaPad 5 14 machines are especially vulnerable to mismatched descriptions. Before paying, request a clear image of the underside label and a powered-on photograph of the keyboard. Compare the printed legends with the language/layout shown in the PSREF, then ask whether the keyboard has ever been replaced. A replacement part may not match the original factory configuration, so the machine’s current hardware and the seller’s written description both matter.

For a refurbished unit, record the return terms in case the keyboard differs from the advertisement. Do not treat a low price, a “like new” condition label or an illuminated photograph as proof of a backlight. The decisive evidence remains the complete identifier, the applicable Lenovo specification and confirmation of the physical keyboard.

A troubleshooting sequence for an apparently dark keyboard

  1. Write down the full model/type or product number.
  2. Check the matching PSREF keyboard-backlight entry.
  3. If it says “No support,” stop troubleshooting software; the hardware is the non-backlit option.
  4. If the generation permits both options, inspect the keycaps for the backlight symbol and compare them with the exact user guide.
  5. Follow only the operating instruction for that generation. Do not borrow a shortcut from another IdeaPad.
  6. If the documentation confirms a backlit configuration but the light still fails, contact Lenovo support or the seller with the identifier and proof of purchase.

This sequence avoids confusing a missing feature with a control issue and gives support the information needed to identify the correct keyboard configuration.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating the screen size as the specification

“14-inch” describes the display class, not the keyboard. Always add the generation and complete identifier.

Mistake: assuming every 14ITL05 is backlit

Lenovo lists both LED-backlit and non-backlit 14ITL05 options. Ask which option belongs to the advertised part number.

Mistake: assuming every 14ARE05 lacks a light

The 14ARE05 page’s keyboard field contains both “LED backlight” and “No support.” Use the exact configuration rather than extending one interpretation to all units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: relying on a product photograph

Lighting, stock images and replacement parts can make a photograph misleading. Treat the PSREF match and seller confirmation as primary evidence.

Mistake: using a shortcut from another model

The gathered documentation does not support a family-wide shortcut. Use the guide for your exact generation and check the key markings on your machine.

Mistake: ignoring withdrawn-product status

The 14ALC05 product PSREF is marked withdrawn. That status does not by itself tell you whether a used or remaining unit has a backlight; it means you should verify the actual unit and listing rather than assume current availability or a standard build.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical decision rule

  1. If the full identifier matches a PSREF entry marked non-backlit or “No support,” treat the laptop as non-backlit.
  2. If the generation’s documentation lists both options, continue until the exact part or machine type selects one configuration.
  3. If the seller cannot provide the complete identifier or an explicit keyboard specification, classify the backlight as unknown, not as included.
  4. If you already own the machine, confirm the identifier first, then use the exact user guide to operate the feature.

This rule prevents the most expensive error: buying a laptop for its family name and discovering that the particular keyboard fitted to it is different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the documentation can and cannot establish

Lenovo’s PSREF pages establish that keyboard backlighting varies within the IdeaPad 5 14 family. They do not establish the specification of an unidentified individual laptop, a retailer’s inventory, or a replacement keyboard. They also do not provide a single operating shortcut valid across every generation.

The 14ARE05 PSREF was last modified 11 October 2021; the Lenovo support listing for the 14IIL05/14ARE05 user guide is dated 12 October 2020; and the 14ITL05 PSREF PDF is dated 17 April 2023. These dates help explain why an older listing, a newer listing and a current support result may not look identical. Use the document that matches the machine’s identifier and confirm the seller’s actual configuration.

Final verdict

A Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 may have a backlit keyboard, but the family name does not answer the question. The cited 14ARE05 specification includes a no-support configuration, while 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 documentation includes both backlit and non-backlit choices. Check the complete model/type or product number, the matching Lenovo PSREF, the keyboard layout and the seller’s exact configuration before treating backlighting as guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 have a backlit keyboard?

No. The family includes different generations and configurations. Lenovo documents a no-support configuration for 14ARE05 and both backlit and non-backlit options for 14ITL05 and 14ALC05.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know if my IdeaPad 5 keyboard is backlit?

Find the complete model/type or product number on the laptop, box or purchase record, then check the matching Lenovo PSREF keyboard section. Confirm the physical keyboard and its layout as well.

Is every IdeaPad 5 14ITL05 backlit?

No. Lenovo’s 14ITL05 documentation lists both LED-backlit and non-backlit possibilities. The exact part or machine type determines which one you have.

Does the IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 support a backlight?

The 14ARE05 PSREF keyboard field includes “LED backlight” and “No support.” Because the page covers configuration choices, verify the individual type or part number rather than applying one label to every 14ARE05.

Does the IdeaPad 5 14ALC05 have an illuminated keyboard?

It can. Lenovo lists both backlit and non-backlit keyboards, along with multiple language and layout entries. Check the exact listing or machine identifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows settings add a backlight to a non-backlit IdeaPad?

No. If the matching PSREF identifies the configuration as non-backlit or “No support,” software cannot add missing keyboard hardware.

Is there one keyboard-light shortcut for all IdeaPad 5 14 models?

The documentation does not establish a universal shortcut. Use the user guide and key markings for your exact generation.

What should I ask a seller before buying?

Ask for the complete model/type or part number, an explicit backlit or non-backlit specification, the keyboard language/layout and confirmation that the photographed unit matches the advertised configuration.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 name does not guarantee a backlit keyboard. Verify the complete identifier and matching Lenovo specification: 14ARE05 includes a no-support configuration, while 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 can be either backlit or non-backlit.
