The Lely Zeta AI Calving Monitor is a ceiling-mounted camera system designed to recognize calving stages, track labor progress and alert a farmer through an app. Lely describes those capabilities as product features; the accuracy figures published for a different camera system cannot be used to predict how Zeta performs.
How does an AI calving camera detect contractions?
A camera-based monitor observes an animal in a calving pen and uses image analysis to identify patterns associated with labor. Lely says Zeta combines cameras, AI and algorithms to detect contractions, follow labor progress and send an app alert when action may be needed. That is the manufacturer’s description of the system, not an independently established accuracy result for Zeta.

Such alerts are best understood as prompts to check the animal, not as a diagnosis. Whether a warning is useful depends on when it arrives, how reliably the system identifies calving, and whether someone can respond.
What is the Lely Zeta, and what does installation involve?
The Lely Zeta is intended to monitor calving in a pen from a camera mounted overhead. The Irish Examiner’s 3 October 2026 report describes the fixture as connected to power and the internet, with controllable LED lighting for night-time and difficult lighting conditions. The report does not establish that every installation has identical requirements, so farms should confirm the setup with Lely or an authorized dealer.

- 24/7 Continuous Recording — Not Just Motion Clips — Smart AOV records around the clock with an adaptive frame rate: 15fps during motion for crisp action, low-fps when idle to save power. When battery runs low, it auto-switches to low-power event recording so security stays on — it does not stop recording entirely.
- Record Locally Right Out of the Box — 32GB microSD included (supports up to 256GB). Also includes 7-day rolling cloud clips (6-second) for quick check-ins. Optional cloud storage is available for off-device backup. No monthly fee required for local recording.
- 10W Solar Panel + 9000mAh Heated Battery — No outlets, no cables. Built-in battery heating technology charges even below 32°F (0°C), so it keeps working through winter. This solar security camera works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (not 5GHz) for better wall penetration, IP65 weatherproof—simple in-app setup. Supports wall or ceiling mounting; leave enough clearance for the camera to pan and tilt freely. (Runtime varies by use, sunlight, and settings.)
- 98 ft / 30 m Long-Range Alerts + Fewer False Alarms — Get alerts from up to 98 ft (30 m)—up to 3× longer range than typical event-only cameras, so you know sooner. AI Human Detection helps reduce false alarms from wind, shadows, and passing cars. Auto Tracking follows movement to keep the subject in frame. The 2-pack works in one app, so you can view both cameras and share access with family.
- 4MP Night Vision + 360° Pan & 100° Tilt — The camera has an 80° horizontal field of view at any one time and physically pans 360° horizontally and tilts 100° vertically. View sharp 4MP video day or night, with 8X digital zoom for a closer look. A spotlight illuminates motion, while the siren and two-way audio let you warn or speak to visitors through the MUBVIEW app.

Can a camera tell when a cow is in labor or needs help?
A camera system may flag behavior or visual changes associated with calving, but an alert is not proof that labor has begun or that assistance is required. Nor does an alert replace direct assessment of a cow whose condition concerns the farmer. The practical value is whether the warning supports timely observation within the farm’s normal staffing and supervision pattern.
Monitoring options can produce early warnings during a preliminary stage or alerts closer to labor onset. A farm comparing systems should match alert timing to its ability to check animals, and ask how each vendor defines a true alert, a missed event and a false alarm. Sensitivity alone does not describe how many alerts will prove useful: specificity, positive predictive value and the burden of false alerts also matter.

What accuracy evidence exists for camera-based calving alerts?
A 2026 field study evaluated Ushi-waka Plus, a visible-light camera system that is distinct from Lely Zeta. It covered 357 calvings on 31 commercial beef cattle farms. Under the study’s criterion—at least one alert within 24 hours before calving—it reported 94.1% sensitivity and a 70.1% positive predictive value. These figures describe that system, population and alert definition; they are not Zeta specifications.
For those events, the median time from the first alert to calving was 142 minutes, with an interquartile range of 75–250 minutes. This is a distribution from the study, not a promise that another system will provide the same lead time.
A separate 2017 study of dairy cows examined prediction of labor onset using expected calving date, with or without activity, rumination and ear-temperature sensor data. Its area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.885 for the model using expected calving date and 0.929 when sensor data were added. At a fixed 1% false-positive rate, sensitivity for identifying the specific hour labor began was 9.1% and 36.4%, respectively. Those results concern a different approach and outcome; they should not be compared directly with the 2026 camera study’s 24-hour alert criterion.

How should a farm evaluate a calving-alert system?
- Alert timing: Does the system warn during an earlier preliminary stage, or near labor onset—and is that lead time useful for the farm’s staffing pattern?
- Performance measures: Ask for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and false-positive burden, along with the exact event and prediction window used for each measure.
- Evidence fit: Check whether results concern the same species, herd type and commercial setting, and whether the tested system is the specific product being considered.
- Deployment: Confirm camera position, power and internet needs, lighting in the pen, and how alerts reach staff through the app.
- Response plan: Decide who receives alerts and how they will assess an animal. A notification is a reason to check, not a substitute for judgment or appropriate assistance.
What does the EuroTier award establish?
The Irish Examiner reported that Lely Zeta received one of the German Agricultural Society’s EuroTier silver innovation medals. That is recognition as an innovation award; it is not, by itself, evidence that the system improves calving outcomes or has a particular detection accuracy.
