Choose the LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 42156 if you want a more compact 1:10 endurance-racing model inspired by the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a represented hybrid system and glow-in-the-dark elements. Choose the LEGO Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 if you want the larger 1:8 display car, a substantially higher piece count, and a V12 with a working eight-speed sequential gearbox.
Both are 18+ Technic display builds, and LEGO currently marks both products as retired. That makes seller, completeness, condition, shipping and returns as important as the model specifications when you compare current listings.

LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 vs. Ferrari Daytona SP3 at a glance
The two cars appeal to different kinds of collector. The Peugeot is an endurance prototype associated with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Ferrari is a road-going supercar replica in LEGO Technic’s Ultimate Car Concept series. Their dimensions, scales and mechanisms make the choice more specific than simply deciding which badge you prefer.

What kind of car is each set trying to capture?
Peugeot 9X8: endurance racing and Le Mans identity
Set 42156 represents the Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar. Its subject is a purpose-built endurance racer rather than a road car. That gives the model a competition-focused identity: the bodywork, cockpit and hybrid-system representation are tied to long-distance circuit racing and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
LEGO positions the set as an adult 1:10 model commemorating the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The hybrid theme is represented through a V6 engine and electric motor. Those parts do not turn the LEGO model into a functioning hybrid powertrain; they are visual and mechanical representations within the Technic build.
Ferrari Daytona SP3: road-car styling and a flagship Technic project
Set 42143 reproduces the Ferrari Daytona SP3 as a 1:8 model. It belongs to LEGO Technic’s Ultimate Car Concept series and emphasizes the proportions and mechanisms of a high-end road supercar. The removable roof and butterfly doors make the cabin part of the display experience, while the V12 and gearbox expose more of the drivetrain concept.
The Ferrari is the more imposing object on a shelf. Its official dimensions exceed 59 cm in length, 25 cm in width and 14 cm in height, so it needs a display location with nearly 60 cm of uninterrupted length before you account for clearance around the model.
Which model is bigger?
The Ferrari is larger in every published dimension. It is over 9 cm longer, over 3 cm wider and over 1 cm taller than the Peugeot’s stated dimensions. Its 1:8 scale also represents a larger physical scale than the Peugeot’s 1:10 scale.
Piece count shows an even bigger difference. The Ferrari contains 3,778 pieces, compared with 1,775 for the Peugeot: 2,003 additional pieces, or a little more than twice as many. That is a measure of the project’s parts volume, not an official build-time or difficulty score. LEGO does not publish a comparable build-time estimate for either set, and the official listings do not establish that one is objectively easier or more stable.
Planning a display space
- Peugeot footprint: allow for a model over 50 cm long and 22 cm wide, plus room to reach the doors and view the illuminated elements.
- Ferrari footprint: allow for a model over 59 cm long and 25 cm wide, with additional access if you want to open the butterfly doors or remove the roof.
- Height: neither model is especially tall compared with its length, but a shelf should leave more than the published height so you can lift or handle the car safely.
- Display orientation: decide whether the car will face forward, sit at an angle or be handled regularly. An angled display consumes more shelf depth than the width figure alone suggests.
These are planning considerations based on LEGO’s published dimensions. They do not predict how much space a particular display stand, case or lighting arrangement will occupy.

Peugeot’s hybrid-system representation
The Peugeot includes a V6 engine and an electric motor to represent its hybrid system. It also has specially designed suspension and steering, giving the model the visual language of an endurance prototype. Opening doors add access to the cockpit area, while glow-in-the-dark elements are a distinctive presentation detail that the Ferrari does not list among its headline features.

If your interest is the engineering story of a modern endurance hypercar, the Peugeot’s feature list is the more direct match. The model lets you display a hybrid-system concept without requiring the larger footprint of the Ferrari.
Ferrari’s V12 and eight-speed gearbox
The Ferrari’s headline mechanical features are a moving-piston V12 and a working eight-speed sequential gearbox operated with a paddle shifter. It also includes steering and shock absorbers. The drivetrain focus makes the Ferrari attractive to builders who want to inspect and operate a more elaborate transmission mechanism after the body is complete.
Butterfly doors and a removable roof add display options. You can show the car closed as a streamlined exterior model, open the doors to expose the cabin, or remove the roof for a different view. Those are modeled functions; they should not be interpreted as evidence of a particular construction quality, reliability or owner experience.

Neither LEGO listing supplies an independent difficulty rating, owner-survey score or measured comparison of how robust the functions are. A larger piece count does not automatically mean a better mechanism, and a shorter model does not automatically mean a simpler build. Use the feature lists to match your interests rather than to infer an unsupported ranking.
Which LEGO Technic car should you buy?
Choose the Peugeot 9X8 42156 when these priorities lead
- Endurance-racing subject: you specifically want a Le Mans hypercar rather than a road supercar.
- More compact scale: a 1:10 model over 50 cm long fits your display area better than the Ferrari’s larger footprint.
- Hybrid-system theme: the represented V6-and-electric-motor layout is more important to you than a V12 gearbox.
- Glow-in-the-dark details: you want a presentation feature explicitly included in the Peugeot specification.
- Lower parts volume: 1,775 pieces is a smaller project than 3,778 pieces, even though no official source converts that difference into hours or difficulty.
Choose the Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 when these priorities lead
- Large display presence: the 1:8 scale and dimensions over 59 × 25 × 14 cm make it the more substantial shelf centerpiece.
- Mechanical drivetrain interest: you want a moving-piston V12 and a working eight-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifter.
- Ferrari styling: the subject’s road-supercar design and Ultimate Car Concept positioning are central to the purchase.
- Interactive bodywork: butterfly doors and a removable roof matter to how you plan to display the model.
- A high-piece-count project: 3,778 pieces give the set a much larger parts inventory and a more extensive construction scope.
When the decision is genuinely close
If you like both cars, make the decision in this order:
- Measure the display location. A shelf that cannot accommodate the Ferrari’s length and width removes that option before price enters the discussion.
- Choose the subject. Decide whether Le Mans endurance racing or Ferrari road-car design is the reason you would still want the model a year after building it.
- Choose the mechanism. Select the hybrid-system representation and luminous details, or the V12, sequential gearbox, butterfly doors and removable roof.
- Set a total purchase limit. Include shipping, taxes, replacement parts and any premium caused by the sets’ retired status.
- Verify the listing. Confirm set number, completeness, condition, seller reputation and return terms before paying.
Retired status changes how you should shop
LEGO’s current regional product listings mark both 42156 and 42143 as retired. Retirement means a direct LEGO purchase cannot be assumed, and availability can vary by country and seller. It does not establish a universal resale value.
Check the exact set number
Use 42156 for the Peugeot and 42143 for the Ferrari when searching listings. Exact numbers reduce the chance of receiving instructions, parts or a different product associated with a similar vehicle name.
Ask whether the set is complete
For a used set, request confirmation that all pieces, tires, panels, transparent parts, stickers and printed or specialized elements are present. “Complete” should refer to the contents, not merely the original box. If the seller cannot document completeness, price the risk of sorting and replacing missing parts.

Separate sealed, opened and built condition
- Sealed: ask whether every inner bag remains unopened and whether the outer box has storage damage.
- Opened but unbuilt: confirm that bags, loose parts, instructions and stickers are all included.
- Built: ask for clear photographs of both sides, the underside, the cockpit and every movable function. Dust, discoloration, stress on panels and missing small elements can be difficult to see in a single front-facing photograph.
- Disassembled: establish whether pieces have been sorted, whether instructions are included and whether the seller guarantees completeness.
Review logistics before comparing prices
Shipping a nearly 60 cm-long model can be more expensive and more vulnerable to damage than shipping the smaller Peugeot. Compare the delivered total, packaging, insurance, return window and seller location in your region. A lower sticker price can cease to be lower after shipping, taxes or missing parts are accounted for.
What do the listed prices mean?
The regional pages used for the specifications displayed different currencies and are not a like-for-like market comparison. At the time of access, the US Ferrari page displayed $449.99, while the French Peugeot page displayed €199.99. Those figures are page-specific displays, not universal current prices, and neither should be treated as a current third-party resale benchmark.
Because both products are retired, a current listing may be above, below or unrelated to an old official price depending on condition, completeness, region and seller. Compare offers using the same currency and the same condition category. Do not assume that a sealed box, an opened complete set and a built model represent equivalent value.

The Ferrari announcement from The LEGO Group on May 24, 2022 said the set would be available through LEGO Stores from June 1, 2022, with many retailers following on August 1, 2022. Those dates explain the original launch sequence; they are not a promise of present stock.
The same announcement quoted LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen describing the model as “a testament to the pursuit of excellence that lies at the core of the Ferrari and LEGO Group ethos.” Ferrari Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni called it “a stunning replica of our limited-edition Daytona SP3.” The statements describe the collaboration and design intent, not independent evidence about build time, durability or owner satisfaction.
A practical decision worksheet
Write down one answer for each line before opening marketplace listings. The set with more decisive answers is usually the better fit, even if the other has a longer feature list.
| Question | If your answer is Peugeot-oriented | If your answer is Ferrari-oriented |
|---|---|---|
| Which racing world interests you? | 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance racing | Ferrari road-supercar design |
| What scale suits the shelf? | 1:10, over 50 cm long | 1:8, over 59 cm long |
| Which drivetrain story appeals? | Represented V6 and electric-motor hybrid system | Moving-piston V12 and eight-speed sequential gearbox |
| Which display details matter? | Glow-in-the-dark elements and opening doors | Butterfly doors and removable roof |
| What parts volume do you want? | 1,775 pieces | 3,778 pieces |
This worksheet does not assign a winner. It translates the published differences into a purchase decision that accounts for subject, space and mechanism rather than relying on brand recognition alone.
Bottom line for buyers
The Peugeot 9X8 42156 is the focused choice for a Le Mans fan who wants a 1:10 hybrid endurance car with luminous details and a more compact footprint. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 is the choice for a collector who has room for a 1:8 model and wants the larger 3,778-piece project, moving V12, sequential gearbox, butterfly doors and removable roof.
Whichever direction you choose, treat the purchase as a retired-set transaction: verify the exact number, inspect condition and completeness, calculate delivered cost and check return terms in your country before committing.
