The LEGO PlayStation set (72306) is the best fit if you want an adult display model of the original console, complete with a plug-in controller and hidden game-inspired scenes. If you would rather build characters, vehicles, or settings from another game, LEGO’s Mario Kart, Horizon, Fortnite, Super Mario, Minecraft, Sonic, and Animal Crossing ranges offer more relevant choices. Decide by franchise, display purpose, space, age suitability, and local price—not piece count alone.
What is the LEGO PlayStation set?
Set 72306 is an 18+ display model of the original PlayStation. It has 1,911 pieces and measures about 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. The controller plugs into the console, and the model has functional Open and Power buttons. Opening the console reveals removable miniature scenes inspired by Gran Turismo (1997) and Ape Escape (1999), which can be displayed inside or beside the console. It is a nostalgic display build, not a playable game system. LEGO’s product listing and September 2026 launch announcement describe its features and release.

Choose by what you want to display or play
Pick the PlayStation for hardware nostalgia
The console replica is the clearest choice if the object itself matters as much as the franchise. Its controller, working buttons, and concealed scenes give it display details beyond a plain console silhouette. Its footprint—about 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep—also makes it worth measuring against the shelf or cabinet where you plan to put it. LEGO product listing

Pick Mario Kart for an adult vehicle display
Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart is a close alternative if you want a comparable adult-oriented gaming display but would rather show a character and vehicle than retro hardware. LEGO’s gamer guide lists it at 18+, 1,972 pieces, and US $169.99. The PlayStation set and kart are similar in piece count, but that does not establish which takes longer to build, is more difficult, or offers better value; the available pages do not provide a like-for-like independent comparison or hands-on build test. Pick a playset or character-led theme for interaction
Horizon Adventures: Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth is age-rated 9+ and includes two buildable machines and play features, making it a different kind of purchase from the PlayStation’s adult display format. LEGO Fortnite spans both children’s playsets and adult display models, while Super Mario, Minecraft, Sonic, and Animal Crossing offer multiple formats and ages. Compare individual sets within those themes rather than assuming the theme name alone tells you what a particular build includes. LEGO Horizon page; LEGO Fortnite theme page; LEGO gaming ranges

A Super Mario refresh is a future option, not a current alternative
LEGO announced new Super Mario roleplay sets featuring minifigure-based Mario and Luigi characters, karts, and environments, with availability planned through LEGO.com, LEGO stores, and select retailers from January 1, 2027. As of October 7, 2026, those sets are upcoming rather than released choices. LEGO’s announcement

- Start with the collection’s purpose. Choose PlayStation for a console-focused nostalgia piece, Mario Kart for a vehicle display, or another game range for its characters and play settings.
- Check age rating and format. The PlayStation and Mario Kart models are both 18+ display builds; the cited Horizon set is 9+ and includes play features. Other themes contain multiple formats, so inspect the specific set.
- Measure the display space. The PlayStation model is about 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep. Compare the dimensions of any alternative with the space you have.
- Compare local prices for the exact set. Prices and availability vary by market and can change; the cited US PlayStation price is a page snapshot, while UK and EU prices above are launch figures.
- Do not use piece count as a shortcut for value. The cited information does not establish comparative build time, difficulty, durability, satisfaction, or resale performance.
LEGO reported in 2024 that 71% of parents in a study said their child likes carrying stories and play from digital play into physical play. The announcement does not state the sample size or methodology, so this is LEGO’s reported finding, not an independently validated population estimate. LEGO’s announcement
