LEGO and PlayStation publish no controller dimensions or measured fidelity test. If controller accuracy matters, use the included model as a visual baseline, then compare a modified or scratch-built version against consistent front, top and side references. A LEGO Ideas PlayStation 5 concept shows a different, DualSense-based direction, but it is only a fan concept unless its instructions and availability are independently confirmed.
What the official LEGO PlayStation set actually includes
Set 72306 recreates the original PlayStation and its first controller, rather than a modern PlayStation 5 and DualSense. LEGO describes the console as a near 1:1 scale replica. The controller plugs into the console, and the model includes working Open and Power buttons plus hidden, removable dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.

That distinction matters when judging accuracy. The official descriptions call the accessory the original PlayStation controller. They do not call it a DualShock, even though Ape Escape was associated historically with the DualShock controller. A DualSense is the controller shown in the fan-made PlayStation 5 concept discussed later, not the controller supplied with 72306.

Is the LEGO PlayStation controller dimensionally accurate?
There is no published answer. The official material gives dimensions for the console but none for the controller, and it does not report a tolerance-based comparison with an original PlayStation controller. Therefore, calling the brick accessory “1:1,” “dimensionally accurate” or demonstrably more accurate than a custom version would go beyond the evidence.
You can still make a useful visual judgment. Compare the model with a reliable reference of the original controller and look at the features that define its identity:
- Overall silhouette: whether the body has the characteristic central section and two outward grips rather than a generic gamepad outline.
- Grip angle and thickness: whether both handles flare and taper in the same direction as the reference.
- Relative width and height: whether the body and grips occupy the same proportions when viewed from the front and top.
- Control separation: whether the directional pad, face buttons and center controls sit in the correct relationship to one another.
- Display scale: whether the controller looks proportionate beside the console or in a person’s hands.
These are comparison criteria, not measurements published by LEGO. Use them to decide whether a modification is visually closer, but reserve a claim of superior accuracy for a build checked against actual dimensions.
Which alternatives are available?
The practical alternatives fall into four categories. Only the first is an identified, commercially announced product; the others are design directions that require verification or your own building work.

Use the official set as a baseline
Buying or borrowing 72306 gives you a complete, documented reference: the console, its plug-in controller and the display features designed around them. Inspect the controller from the same angles you will use for a custom build. If the proportions satisfy you, there is no need to replace it. If one area looks too thick, too flat or poorly positioned, retain the console and rebuild only that section.

Modify the included controller
A partial rebuild is the least disruptive route. Keep a record of the original assembly before taking it apart, and change one region at a time: the two grips, the center bridge, the directional controls, the face-button cluster or the center controls. After each change, place the controller beside the console and check whether its apparent scale still fits the plug connection and display.
Because LEGO does not publish the controller’s dimensions, a modification can be described honestly as a visual refinement or a better match to your chosen reference. It should not be advertised as an officially validated scale correction.
Consider the LEGO Ideas PlayStation 5 concept
A LEGO Ideas project depicting a microscale PlayStation 5 with a DualSense controller and stand demonstrates a different design direction. Its appearance on LEGO Ideas does not establish that LEGO released it, that a commercial kit exists or that instructions are available. Treat it as inspiration unless you verify a current, legitimate source for parts and instructions.
It also should not be compared as if it were a redesign of the 72306 controller: it represents a different console generation, controller shape and intended scale.
How to build a more accurate custom controller
A custom model is most defensible when you establish a reference, choose a scale and check every view before adding decoration. The following workflow avoids the common mistake of making a controller that looks convincing from one angle but collapses from the side.

1. Define the target before choosing parts
Write down which controller you are reproducing: the original PlayStation controller, a later DualShock variant or a DualSense. Do not mix generations while selecting references. Decide whether the finished model should match the 72306 console, sit in a hand, or stand alone. That decision controls how large the body must be and how much room you have for recognizable controls.
2. Gather consistent references
Use front, top and side views of the same hardware revision. A perspective photograph can make one grip look shorter or wider than it really is, so do not use it as your only scale reference. If you have access to the physical controller, measure its greatest width, height and depth with a ruler or calipers. Record the measurements before opening the brick box.
When a physical reference is unavailable, use a dimensioned drawing or manufacturer documentation and label every value with its source. Do not turn an image’s pixel width into a real-world measurement without a known scale.
3. Choose a repeatable LEGO scale
Pick a scale that lets you express the narrow center and both grips without forcing the body into a single rectangular block. Mark the intended width, height and depth on graph paper or in a digital plan, then keep the same scale in all three views. A larger model usually makes grip angles and control spacing easier to represent; a smaller model may fit the official console better but will simplify buttons and curves.
Use the LEGO Builder app or a physical parts layout to test the footprint before committing to decorative details. The app can help organize a digital construction plan, but it does not supply a published accuracy measurement for the 72306 controller.
4. Block out the silhouette
Start with temporary layers that establish the center section and the two grips. Check the outline from above first, then rotate to the side. The grips should not become identical rectangular handles simply because those are easy to stack. Adjust the angle and taper until both views resemble the reference.

Keep temporary colors if they make edges easier to see. Color matching can wait; an attractive black shell cannot rescue an incorrect outline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Place the control zones
Once the shell is stable, mark the locations of the directional pad, four face buttons and center controls. Compare the gaps between those zones, not just their individual shapes. A controller can have the right number of buttons and still look wrong if the groups are too close to the grips or too far apart.
Use separate small assemblies where a control needs to sit above the shell. Avoid permanently embedding every button until you have checked the model from the top and a shallow side angle. This makes it easier to shift a group by one building increment without dismantling the whole body.
6. Recheck scale beside the console
Place the custom controller beside the 72306 console or in the same display position as the supplied accessory. The console’s published dimensions—over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep—describe the model, so use the physical console as the visual context rather than assuming an unstated controller ratio.
Look for three mismatches: a controller that overwhelms the console, one that disappears beside it, or a plug and cable position that no longer reaches the intended socket. Correct the structural scale before adding surface texture.
7. Validate all three views
Photograph or inspect the build from front, top and side at the same distance and angle as your references. Make a short checklist:

- Does the center bridge retain the correct width relative to each grip?
- Do both grips share the reference angle and taper?
- Are the directional pad, face buttons and center controls separated in the right order?
- Does the depth look plausible from the side?
- Does the model remain proportionate beside the console or in the intended hand-scale display?
Only after these checks should you describe the result as a closer visual match. If you want to claim dimensional accuracy, publish the measured reference values, the corresponding brick-model values and the tolerance you used.

Confusing controller generations
The 72306 accessory is based on the original PlayStation controller. A DualShock reference adds features and a different shape, while a DualSense belongs to the PlayStation 5 generation. Label your reference images and keep those designs separate.
Applying the console’s 1:1 wording to the controller
“Near 1:1” is LEGO’s description of the console. It is not a published scale for the controller. Keep that qualification attached whenever you discuss the set’s scale.

Assuming an Ideas project is a product
A project page shows a fan design, not necessarily a set, kit or instruction package. Confirm current availability from an authorized source before spending money or promising readers that they can build it directly.
Optimizing details before proportions
Extra buttons, printed tiles and surface color are secondary. Build the silhouette and control spacing first; otherwise you may have to remove finished details to correct the body.
How to choose the right approach
- Choose 72306 unchanged if you want the documented original-console display, working Open and Power buttons, removable game-inspired scenes and a controller that plugs into the model.
- Modify the included controller if the console is right for your display but a particular silhouette, grip angle or control gap needs adjustment.
- Use the PS5 concept only as inspiration if you want a DualSense-era direction and understand that its commercial status and instructions are unverified.
- Scratch-build at a chosen scale if measured proportions matter more than an official matching set and you are prepared to document your references and compromises.
The strongest accuracy claim is therefore a measured, limited one: identify the controller generation, state the reference and scale, compare multiple views, and report what changed. The official set remains a useful baseline, but the available product information does not prove that its brick controller is dimensionally exact.
