LEGO Modular Buildings vs. Venice-Style Neighborhood Sets: Which Is Better for Your City?

Choose LEGO Modular Buildings if you want a city that can keep growing block by block. Choose the LEGO Icons Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 if you want Venice’s canals, waterfront architecture and minifigure stories concentrated in one large centerpiece. The retired LEGO Architecture Venice 21026 is a different proposition: a compact skyline display for limited shelf space, not a full neighborhood street.

The decision in one sentence

These options solve different city-building problems. A Modular Buildings collection is an expandable street grid: each building is designed to stand alone or connect to other modular buildings. Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 is a self-contained canal-side diorama whose sections can be separated and rearranged, but it is not documented as a standard modular street module. Venice 21026 is a small, landmark-focused skyline model.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters more than piece count. The largest model is not automatically the best foundation for a city. Your choice should follow the way you expect to display, expand and play with the scene.

What each set is designed to do

Modular Buildings: an expandable urban grid

The Modular Buildings concept is built around repeatable street frontage. LEGO’s catalog says modular buildings can be displayed individually or connected to one another. That lets you buy one block now, add another later and keep a coherent street rather than replacing the first model when your city grows.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The approach works best when you enjoy planning adjacent façades, arranging corners and filling interiors with businesses and residents. It also spreads the cost and construction time across separate purchases. A single building can be a complete display, while a row creates the visual effect of a larger city.

Venetian Neighbourhood 11388: a complete waterfront scene

LEGO Icons Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 is a 5,682-piece travel-themed building set centered on Venice. The scene includes a luxury villa, glassblowing workshop, astronomical clock tower, arched bridge, canal and gondola, plus 17 characters. It is intended to read as one dramatic neighborhood rather than as a generic block that waits for neighboring modules.

Its floors and roofs can be removed, and its sections can be separated and rearranged. That gives you access for building and display variations inside the set, but the listing does not describe a standardized connection system for joining it directly to Modular Buildings.

Venice 21026: a compact landmark skyline

LEGO Architecture Venice 21026 is a retired 212-piece skyline model. It depicts the Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark’s Campanile, St. Theodore and the Winged Lion of St. Mark, and the Bridge of Sighs. With a footprint of over 5 inches high, 9 inches wide and 1 inch deep, it favors a narrow shelf or desk over minifigure-scale city play.

Why Modular Buildings are the stronger city foundation

They support a repeatable street plan

A growing city needs a rule for where the next building goes. Modular Buildings provide that rule: align façades and connect the buildings into a continuous urban frontage. You can begin with one structure, place it beside an existing street and add another when space or budget allows.

This is useful even if your eventual city includes parks, transit lines or waterfronts. The modular row gives you a stable “downtown” edge; unusual districts can branch from it without forcing every scene to use the same architectural language.

Shopping Street 11371 is a practical starting block

Shopping Street 11371 contains 3,456 pieces and measures over 36 cm high, 25 cm wide and 25 cm deep. Its two-story music shop, furniture store, furnished apartment, roof garden and central alleyway provide several activity zones without requiring a full multi-building collection.

Seven minifigures make the block immediately legible as a working neighborhood. Easy interior access is important for a city builder: you can furnish rooms, stage scenes and reach details after the building is placed in a row. Its footprint is also more manageable than 11388’s 63 cm width, so it is easier to use as the first section of a shelf-length street.

Assembly Square shows the upper end of a modular block

Assembly Square 10255 is a useful size and complexity benchmark. The LEGO Group’s 2019 Fall Catalog lists 4,002 pieces, a multi-shop façade and dimensions over 13 inches high, 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep. It demonstrates how a modular building can become a major visual anchor while still belonging to a connected street.

Because it contains multiple shops and amenities in one façade, it can serve as a civic or commercial center in a larger layout. Treat the catalog figures as historical specifications from 2019 rather than as a statement about current stock.

Expansion is easier to budget and stage

With modular construction, you can finish one building and display it before committing to another. That makes it easier to measure the real shelf, test lighting and decide whether your next purchase should be a corner, a taller façade or a different neighborhood function.

It also reduces the risk of a single purchase overwhelming your room. A 5,682-piece diorama can dominate a table immediately; a modular collection can reach similar visual impact over time, while each addition remains useful on its own.

What makes Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 special

It delivers Venice-specific architecture in one build

11388 is the choice when “Venice” is the subject, not merely the inspiration. The canal, gondola, arched bridge, astronomical clock tower, luxury villa and glassblowing workshop establish a recognizable waterfront setting without requiring you to source several separate buildings.

The 17-character cast supports different kinds of scenes: gondoliers, carnival-goers, tourists and musicians can populate the bridge, canal and public spaces. That density of characters gives the set a narrative energy that a landmark-only skyline cannot provide.

The model is large and needs a deliberate display plan

At over 48 cm high, 63 cm wide and 31 cm deep, 11388 needs a broad, deep surface and enough vertical clearance for its tower and removable roof sections. Measure the intended shelf or table before buying. A surface that technically fits the base may still be uncomfortable if you cannot reach the interiors or lift the roof sections.

Plan for viewing angles as well. The 63 cm width rewards a frontal or three-quarter display, while the 31 cm depth means the model will project farther than a typical shallow skyline. Keep the canal and bridge visible rather than pushing the set against a wall where the rear details become inaccessible.

Rearrangeable sections add display flexibility, not automatic compatibility

The floors and roofs can be removed, and the sections can be separated and rearranged. That helps during construction, interior access and alternate presentations. It also lets you vary the composition on a table or rotate a section toward viewers.

However, rearranging the supplied sections is different from connecting the model to a standardized modular street. LEGO’s listing describes the internal flexibility but does not promise that 11388 will align with the base depth, façade rhythm or connection points of Modular Buildings. Buy it for its own diorama qualities first.

Can Venetian Neighbourhood fit with Modular Buildings?

You can display the models in the same city, but treat them as neighboring districts rather than as guaranteed clip-together modules. The documented Modular Buildings system supports connected buildings; 11388 is documented as a separable, rearrangeable scene. No direct LEGO claim establishes a universal connection between the two formats.

There are several practical ways to combine them:

  • Waterfront edge: Put 11388 at the end of a modular street so the canal reads as a boundary or harbor.
  • Tourist quarter: Use the Venetian scene as a destination district beside shops, hotels or transit buildings in the modular row.
  • Old city versus new city: Keep the ornate villa and clock tower as a historic center, with conventional modular façades extending away from it.
  • Separate display zones: Place 11388 on its own table or riser and use Modular Buildings on a longer shelf when their footprints or visual scales do not align.

Use a physical transition—an open plaza, bridge approach, park or street—between the styles. That makes the change in architecture look intentional instead of like a failed attempt to make two different systems share one base.

How the three options compare for common city-building goals

If your priority is future expansion

Start with Modular Buildings. Shopping Street 11371 gives you a complete block, and the catalog’s individual-or-connected display guidance supports adding more buildings later. Choose a Venetian set only if the Venice scene itself is the destination and you are comfortable treating it as a fixed centerpiece.

If your priority is an unmistakable Venice story

Choose Venetian Neighbourhood 11388. Its named architectural elements, canal activity and 17-character cast provide a level of place-specific storytelling that a generic urban block cannot match. The trade-off is the large footprint and the fact that the scene is self-contained rather than an ordinary street module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If shelf space is the limiting factor

Venice 21026 is the compact option. Its 212 pieces and footprint of over 5 inches high, 9 inches wide and 1 inch deep make it suitable for a narrow shelf. It is a skyline display, not a minifigure-scale neighborhood, so it will not replace a modular building if you want rooms, shops and street-level play.

If you want interiors and active scenes

Shopping Street 11371 offers a conventional urban interior program: a music shop, furniture store, furnished apartment, roof garden and central alleyway, with seven minifigures. Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 offers richer thematic storytelling and 17 characters, but its appeal is concentrated in the Venetian setting and its large diorama composition.

Space planning before you buy

Use the manufacturer’s dimensions as the minimum planning envelope, then add working room.

  1. Measure the surface: Record usable width, depth and height, not just the outside dimensions of the furniture.
  2. Compare the footprint: 11388 requires over 63 cm of width and 31 cm of depth. Shopping Street 11371 requires over 25 cm by 25 cm. Venice 21026 requires over 9 inches by 1 inch in footprint terms.
  3. Check vertical clearance: 11388 rises over 48 cm; Shopping Street rises over 36 cm. Include space for lifting roofs and reaching upper floors.
  4. Reserve access: Leave enough room to remove roofs, move sections and handle minifigures without knocking adjacent buildings.
  5. Plan the viewing angle: A deep diorama needs front and side visibility. A narrow skyline can sit against a wall more easily.

Do not place a large model on a surface that flexes when you reach across it. A stable, level base reduces stress on bridges, towers and removable sections.

Storytelling and play value

Modular street stories

Modular Buildings are strongest when you want many small stories distributed across a city: a customer entering the music shop, a furniture delivery, residents using the roof garden or pedestrians crossing an alley. Each new building adds another set of activities and changes the rhythm of the street.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Because buildings can stand individually, you can also stage them as separate vignettes during construction. Once several are connected, the same scenes become part of a larger urban narrative.

Venetian waterfront stories

11388 concentrates storytelling around travel, craft and public spectacle. Gondoliers move through the canal, musicians and carnival-goers animate the bridge, tourists visit the villa and workshop, and the astronomical clock tower supplies a visual landmark. The 17-character cast is large enough to make the scene feel populated without adding outside figures immediately.

Architecture skyline viewing

21026 is primarily about recognizing landmarks and appreciating a compact silhouette. The Rialto Bridge, St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark’s Campanile, St. Theodore and the Winged Lion of St. Mark, and the Bridge of Sighs create a visual summary of Venice. Its small scale limits interior play and minifigure interaction, but that is also why it works where a full neighborhood would not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability and purchase checks

Availability changes, so verify the listing status at the time you buy. Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 appears in the current LEGO Group listing, and Shopping Street 11371 appears in a current LEGO Group licensed storefront listing. Venice 21026 is marked retired on the LEGO Group listing; remaining units therefore depend on marketplace stock and condition.

For retired sets, check that the listing identifies the exact set number, includes the original instruction material when that matters to you and states whether pieces or minifigures are missing. A low price is not useful if the canal, bridge or landmark elements require costly replacement parts.

A separate fan-designed option called BrickLink Venetian Houses has been described with two façades, a bridge, water canal and gondola. Verify its current program status, stock and final product details before treating it as a purchase alternative; those details can change independently of official LEGO listings.

A practical selection guide

  • Choose Modular Buildings first when you want a connected street, expect to add buildings over months or years, or need each purchase to work as an independent urban block.
  • Choose Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 when Venice is the central theme, you have room for a model over 63 cm wide and 31 cm deep, and you prefer one highly detailed scene to a gradually assembled grid.
  • Choose Venice 21026 when your display is narrow, your interest is Venice’s skyline landmarks and you do not need minifigure-scale rooms or a playable neighborhood.
  • Combine 11388 with Modular Buildings only as a planned district arrangement. Use a plaza, park, waterfront edge or other transition instead of assuming the sections will connect like standard modular bases.

Verdict

For most people building a city, Modular Buildings are the better foundation because the documented individual-or-connected format gives every new purchase a place in an expanding street. Shopping Street 11371 is a manageable urban starting block, while Assembly Square 10255 illustrates how a larger modular façade can anchor a district.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Venetian Neighbourhood 11388 is the better centerpiece when the goal is Venice itself: canals, a gondola, named architecture, a 17-character cast and a rearrangeable waterfront scene. Its 5,682 pieces and over-48-by-63-by-31-centimeter envelope demand more space and a deliberate display plan.

Venice 21026 serves a narrower need. As a retired 212-piece skyline, it is the sensible choice for a compact landmark display, but not for readers seeking a full street or minifigure-scale neighborhood.
