Choose LEGO La Catrina 40492 if you want a character-led BrickHeadz display; choose LEGO Altar of the Dead 40811 if you want a larger, two-sided scene with both a decorated skull and an altar. The practical decision also depends on availability: the U.K. LEGO listing marks La Catrina as retired, while the U.S. listing showed Altar of the Dead available when checked. Compare the current regional price, seller, completeness and condition before paying for either set.
The short answer
These sets serve different display purposes rather than competing as identical builds. La Catrina is a single stylized figure in the BrickHeadz format. Its appeal is the named character, recognizable hat and face decoration, and compact footprint. Altar of the Dead is a small scene: turn it around and you get a skull on one side and an altar on the other, with the floral and food details doing most of the visual work.

The table explains why there is no universal winner. If the character itself is the point, 40492 is the direct fit. If you want more construction and a display that presents differently from each side, 40811 is the stronger match.

What LEGO La Catrina 40492 gives you
A character-first interpretation
LEGO describes 40492 as a BrickHeadz interpretation of La Catrina. The model uses a dark pink hat, colorful flower elements, and decorative tiles on the face and torso. Those choices make the figure read as a dressed, decorated character rather than a generic skull.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That focus matters for display. A figure can sit beside other BrickHeadz models as an individual character, form the centerpiece of a small seasonal arrangement, or stand alone where a scene would feel too busy. You are buying the identity of La Catrina more than a setting around her.
Compact display with a fixed viewpoint
The published height is the main size reference for 40492; LEGO does not provide a footprint in the cited listing. Because it is a figure, the front-facing decoration is the natural viewing angle. Plan a shelf position where the hat, flowers and face tiles are visible rather than tucked behind taller objects.
What retirement changes
LEGO marks 40492 retired on its U.K. product page. That label means a buyer should treat current offers as secondary-market or remaining-stock decisions, not as a dependable in-catalog purchase. The label does not, by itself, establish what any seller should charge or whether a particular listing is complete.

For a used or older boxed copy, inspect the seller’s photographs and description for the box, instructions, all printed or decorated elements and the correct minifigure-scale accessories, if any are included in that listing. Ask for a parts inventory or additional photographs when the description is vague. A lower headline price can stop being a bargain if replacement parts, shipping or missing instructions add cost.
What LEGO Altar of the Dead 40811 gives you
Two displays in one footprint
40811 is built as a two-sided model. One side presents a skull embellished with LEGO flowers; the reverse presents an altar with a flower arch and food offerings. LEGO’s official product copy says: The skull is embellished with LEGO flowers, while the altar features a flower arch and various foods offerings.
This arrangement makes the set useful when you want a display that rewards turning it around. You can show the skull toward a room and keep the altar facing a wall, or place it where visitors can walk around it. The model is still compact, but it supplies a setting and a reverse view instead of a single character pose.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

More construction than the character model
With 231 pieces, 40811 asks you to assemble more structure and decoration than the smaller BrickHeadz model. Piece count is not a measure of build time or difficulty, and no independent build-time test is established here. It is best read as a rough indication that the altar, arch, offerings and skull create more elements to put together.
Published dimensions and placement
LEGO lists the model at over 3.5 inches (9 cm) high, 3 inches (8 cm) wide and 3.5 inches (10 cm) deep. The depth is important: unlike a front-only figure, this model needs enough room to turn or to show its reverse. Measure the intended shelf and leave clearance for fingers if you plan to rotate it regularly.
Availability, price and regional caveats
Why the two listings are not directly equivalent
The cited product pages are from different LEGO storefronts and regions. The U.K. page for 40492 carries the retired designation, while the U.S. page for 40811 showed “Available now” and a price of $14.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026. That amount is a time-specific U.S. observation, not a guaranteed current price, worldwide price or promise of continuing stock.

Taxes, shipping, currency conversion and regional inventory can change the checkout total. A buyer outside the United States should check the local LEGO storefront or an established local retailer rather than converting the displayed amount and assuming it will apply.
How to evaluate a 40492 listing
- Confirm the exact set number. Make sure the listing says 40492, not a similarly themed product or a parts bundle.
- Check condition. Separate sealed, complete-used, incomplete and built-only listings; they are different purchases even when the headline title is identical.
- Verify completeness. Ask whether the decorative tiles, flower elements, instructions and packaging are included if those matter to you.
- Price the total. Include postage, taxes and any replacement parts before comparing with a currently sold set.
- Review seller evidence. Clear photographs of the actual item are more useful than stock images, especially for an older or opened copy.
How to evaluate a 40811 listing
- Check your region first. The cited availability and price came from the U.S. LEGO listing and may not appear in another country.
- Confirm whether the offer is direct from LEGO or a third-party seller. Stock status, returns and condition can differ.
- Compare the checkout total. Use the local currency and include delivery and taxes.
- Check the return policy. This is especially useful if the box arrives damaged or parts are missing.
Which set is better for display?
Choose La Catrina for a character collection
Pick 40492 when your display needs a named figure. The BrickHeadz styling, dark pink hat and flower details create a clear focal character. It works best when the front of the model is visible and when you value a compact object that can stand by itself.
It is also the logical choice if you already collect BrickHeadz figures and want this particular Day of the Dead subject in that format. The set’s retirement status means the purchase decision is partly about finding a trustworthy copy at a sensible total cost, not simply clicking a current product page.

Choose Altar of the Dead for a scene or centerpiece
Pick 40811 when the display should communicate a place as well as a subject. The decorated skull, flower arch and food offerings give you several visual details to discover, while the two-sided construction lets you choose which face is presented.
The model is a better fit for a shelf, desk or seasonal arrangement where viewers can see more than one side. Its published depth also makes it more demanding of shelf space than a figure whose main concern is height.
Choose by viewing angle
| If your display location is… | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A narrow shelf viewed mostly from the front | La Catrina | The character’s face, hat and torso decoration are designed to read as a front-facing figure. |
| A coffee table, open shelf or cabinet accessible from both sides | Altar of the Dead | The skull and altar faces can be shown by rotating the model or walking around it. |
| A BrickHeadz-focused collection | La Catrina | Its format matches that collection style. |
| A seasonal vignette with several small objects | Altar of the Dead | The altar and offerings provide a built-in setting for a scene. |
Age guidance and buying for a child
LEGO rates La Catrina 10+ and Altar of the Dead 9+. Use those labels as the manufacturer’s guidance for the intended age range, not as a prediction of exactly how long a child will take to build or whether an adult should supervise.

The one-year difference should not decide the purchase by itself. Consider the child’s interest: a child who wants a recognizable character may stay engaged with 40492, while a child who enjoys arranging details and discovering a reverse side may prefer 40811. Check the instructions, the child’s tolerance for small decorative parts and the amount of help an adult is prepared to provide.
The product descriptions frame these sets around Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The 40811 listing says the model can introduce children to how the tradition is celebrated in Mexico. That is a specific product-description claim; these listings do not establish a complete history of the tradition or represent every regional practice. Present the model as a themed LEGO interpretation, and use an authoritative cultural source if you are teaching history or cultural context alongside the build.
A practical decision process
- Define the subject you actually want. Write “La Catrina character” or “skull-and-altar scene.” If you cannot choose, decide whether the model will be viewed mainly from the front or from multiple sides.
- Measure the display location. For 40811, allow for its listed width and depth as well as height. For 40492, confirm that the available vertical space exceeds its listed height; the official listing does not provide a footprint.
- Set a delivered-cost ceiling. Include local taxes, shipping, currency conversion and, for a retired set, possible replacement parts.
- Check the correct regional listing. Availability and price are storefront-specific. Do not treat a U.S. status as proof that the same item is available in your country.
- Verify condition and completeness. This step is essential for 40492 and still sensible for any opened 40811 listing.
- Buy the format you will display. A lower price is not an advantage if the model’s viewing angle, footprint or subject does not suit the space.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “Day of the Dead set” means the same kind of model. One is a character figure; the other is a two-sided scene.
- Using piece count as a difficulty score. The published counts describe how many pieces are included, not build time, skill or enjoyment.
- Treating retirement as a fixed resale value. Retirement identifies catalog status; it does not guarantee a price, condition or completeness for any listing.
- Comparing a U.S. price with a local checkout total. Regional taxes, shipping and inventory can change the final amount.
- Ignoring the reverse side of 40811. Its altar and skull faces are central to the design, so hiding one side may waste the feature you paid for.
- Relying on a stock photo for an older copy. Ask for photographs of the actual box or built model and clarify missing parts before purchasing.
Final recommendation by buyer type
- Character collector: Buy La Catrina 40492, provided you can verify the copy’s condition and completeness at a total price you accept.
- Scene builder: Buy Altar of the Dead 40811 for its skull, altar, flower arch and offerings.
- Front-facing shelf display: Start with La Catrina.
- Open shelf or table display: Start with Altar of the Dead.
- Buyer who wants the simplest current purchase: Check Altar of the Dead in your regional LEGO store first; the cited U.S. listing was available at the time checked.
- Buyer choosing between a verified new set and an uncertain retired listing: Favor the verified, complete option unless La Catrina’s character is the reason you are buying.
There is no need to force these models into a single ranking. La Catrina wins when the named character and BrickHeadz identity come first. Altar of the Dead wins when a larger build, reversible presentation and altar scene matter more. Verify the live regional price and the exact condition of the copy before placing the order.
