This is a school-year adventure rather than a single film campaign. The first game follows the early years at Hogwarts; the second continues through the remaining years. That structure gives families a clear narrative sequence and a recognizable rhythm of classes, magical abilities, exploration and story scenes. It also means that the Collection’s scope is seven Harry Potter school years, not every piece of Wizarding World fiction.
Warner Bros. Japan’s announcement says the remastered compilation includes the two games plus previously released Character Pack and Spell Pack downloadable content. That announcement covered PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC for the Japanese release, and specifically discussed physical PS5 and Switch versions there. Regional availability can differ, so treat the Japanese physical-release statement as market-specific rather than proof that the same package is sold everywhere. The announcement is available at Warner Bros. Japan.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
The Skywalker Saga retells all nine numbered Star Wars films. Nintendo’s Switch listing says players can choose which trilogy to begin with and supports one to two players on one system; it gives April 5, 2022 as the Switch release date. See the platform-specific details at Nintendo.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe LEGO Group’s official game page lists more than 300 playable characters, travel to 23 planets, more than 100 vehicles, quests, exploration and character upgrades. It also describes combat with combos, blasters, lightsabers and the Force. These are publisher-stated content counts and features, not an independent measurement of how much time a family will spend in each activity. The complete feature description is at LEGO’s official page.
The game’s structure is consequently broader and more exploratory. A family can move among film episodes, visit planets and switch among many character types and vehicles. That variety is the main reason to choose it over the more school-centered Harry Potter collection.
How the moment-to-moment play differs
The clearest distinction is not simply “magic versus science fiction.” It is the way each game organizes its activities. Harry Potter’s official description groups play around learning and using abilities: casting spells, brewing potions, attending lessons, solving environmental puzzles and dueling. Those elements reinforce the Hogwarts setting and give children a repeated reason to try a newly available magical skill.
Star Wars places more emphasis on movement among locations and on changing the tool used to approach a challenge. The published feature list includes quests, planetary exploration, vehicles, character upgrades, combos, blasters, lightsabers and the Force. A child who enjoys choosing a character, trying a different vehicle or wandering away from a film mission may prefer that range. A child who likes a more recognizable school routine and puzzle interactions may prefer Harry Potter.

Which game is better for different families?
Choose Harry Potter when the fictional world is the deciding factor
If your children already identify with Hogwarts houses, spells and characters, the Collection is the safer recommendation. Familiarity helps children understand why they are visiting a location or learning an ability, and the two-game package gives a long, chronological Harry Potter story. The activity mix also favors families who enjoy solving environmental puzzles and experimenting with magical abilities more than driving vehicles or engaging in blaster combat.
This recommendation is about fit, not an objective quality ranking. The available official descriptions do not establish that Harry Potter is easier, longer, technically superior or more replayable than Star Wars.
Choose Star Wars when variety and exploration matter most
Star Wars is the stronger match for households that want a large sandbox of film locations, characters and vehicles. Starting with any trilogy can let siblings choose a familiar entry point instead of requiring everyone to begin at the chronological beginning. The published counts—more than 300 playable characters, 23 planets and more than 100 vehicles—also indicate a wider range of things to collect and try than the Harry Potter descriptions document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe LEGO Group calls the game an accessible entry point that younger players can pick up while retaining depth for others. That is the publisher’s characterization, not an independent family test, so use it as a description of design intent rather than a promise about your child’s experience.
When neither franchise has a clear advantage
For a family with no strong preference, decide by play style. Select Harry Potter for a more focused sequence of school-year stories and magic-based tasks. Select Star Wars for free-form travel, vehicle use, a larger documented roster and the ability to begin with any trilogy. If two children disagree about franchises, compare the activities they value—puzzles and potions versus exploration and vehicles—rather than trying to declare one universe universally better.
Content and age suitability
Both titles carry an ESRB E10+ rating, but their descriptors differ. Read the full entries for LEGO Harry Potter Collection and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga before deciding for a particularly sensitive child.
| Game | ESRB descriptors | What the rating summary describes |
|---|---|---|
| Harry Potter Collection | Cartoon Violence; Crude Humor | Magical blasts and battles involving ghosts, spiders, trolls, giant snakes and wizards |
| Skywalker Saga | Cartoon Violence; Comic Mischief; In-Game Purchases | Punches, blasters, lightsabers and staffs; defeated characters break into LEGO pieces |
The violence is presented through LEGO characters and fantasy effects, but “cartoon” does not mean every child will be comfortable with every scene. Consider whether your child is uneasy around spiders, snakes, ghosts, wizard battles, blasters or lightsabers. Harry Potter’s listing specifically notes crude humor; Star Wars’ listing specifically notes comic mischief and in-game purchases.
An in-game-purchases descriptor does not tell you that a purchase is required to finish the story. It does mean parents should review platform purchase controls and the exact edition’s included content. Use a child account, require a password for purchases and confirm what downloadable content is already bundled before handing over the controller.

Playing together: local multiplayer and hardware checks
Both games can support two people locally on the documented listings, but the evidence is platform-specific. The PS5 page for Harry Potter lists one to two players. Nintendo’s Switch page for Star Wars lists one to two players on one Switch system. Do not assume that a player count shown for one platform automatically applies to every edition.
Before buying Harry Potter
- Confirm that the store page is for the Collection, not an individual older game.
- Check whether your console is PS5, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC or another supported platform in your region.
- Verify whether the listing is a remastered version and whether Character Pack and Spell Pack content is included.
- Check the number and type of controllers required for local two-player play.
Before buying Star Wars
- Confirm the platform listing and its stated local-player support.
- Check whether you are buying Standard, Deluxe or Galactic edition.
- Read the included character packs and any add-ons instead of assuming every edition contains the same roster.
- Review your platform’s purchase settings because the ESRB listing notes in-game purchases.
PlayStation’s official Star Wars page lists Standard, Deluxe and Galactic editions and character-pack add-ons: PlayStation. Edition names, bundle contents and prices can change by storefront and region, so compare the live listing at the moment you buy rather than relying on an old sale price.
Cost, editions and what you actually receive
There is no dependable single price for either title. Digital stores change prices and promotions, and physical copies vary by country, platform and seller. Compare the current price with the contents of the exact package rather than treating an old discount as a permanent value claim.

For The Skywalker Saga, the US PlayStation listing identifies Standard, Deluxe and Galactic editions and separately lists character-pack add-ons. The practical question is whether your family wants those extra characters, not whether the most expensive label sounds better. A Standard edition may be sufficient when the priority is the nine-film story and core exploration. Read each store’s inclusion list because edition names and bundle contents can differ by region.
The Harry Potter Collection is itself a compilation of Years 1–4 and Years 5–7. Warner Bros. Games’ Japan announcement says that package also includes previously released Character Pack and Spell Pack content. It announced physical PS5 and Switch versions for Japan and named PS5, Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC for that regional release. That is useful evidence that packaged versions exist, but it does not prove a current physical listing in your country. Check the local retailer or digital storefront for the exact platform and language options.
When comparing two prices, include likely extras in the calculation: a second controller for local play, an optional character pack, and the difference between a physical disc or cartridge and a digital download. Do not assume downloadable content transfers between platforms or editions unless the store explicitly says so.
Story scope, pacing and replay considerations
Harry Potter’s chronological structure
Harry Potter’s two-game format presents a continuous school-year journey. Families who like following one cast through a defined beginning, middle and end may find that organization easier to navigate. The official material establishes the seven-year coverage and the named activities, but it does not establish a completion time, difficulty curve or replay-value advantage. Avoid choosing it on the assumption that a longer story automatically means more replayability.
Star Wars’ selectable trilogies and open areas
Star Wars lets players choose which trilogy to begin with, then combines film missions with planetary exploration and side activities. The larger documented character and vehicle counts can support experimentation, but the sources do not quantify how much content is mandatory, optional or repeated. Treat the numbers as the size of the available roster and world list, not as a promise of a particular number of hours.

What the evidence cannot answer
Neither the official product pages nor the ratings establish which game is technically smoother on every platform, easier for a specific age, faster to complete, or more enjoyable for a particular family. Those outcomes depend on the child’s reading ability, controller experience, tolerance for combat and attachment to the franchise. A conditional recommendation is more reliable than a universal ranking.
A practical family decision process
- Ask the franchise question first. If most players strongly prefer Hogwarts or Star Wars, start there. Shared enthusiasm usually matters more than a small feature difference.
- Match the activity mix. Pick Harry Potter for spells, potions, lessons, puzzles and duels. Pick Star Wars for planets, vehicles, quests, character switching, blasters, lightsabers and Force powers.
- Screen the descriptors. Read the ESRB summaries and discuss spiders, snakes, ghosts, magical battles, blasters, comic mischief, crude humor and in-game purchases in terms your child understands.
- Confirm the exact hardware. Open the store listing for your console and region. Verify player count, edition, included DLC, controller needs and storage or physical-format details shown there.
- Set purchase controls. Particularly for Star Wars, enable password approval or a child-account restriction before play.
- Buy the package that contains the content you want. Do not pay for a Deluxe, Galactic or add-on bundle unless its characters or other extras matter to your family.
Parent setup checklist
Before the first session, check the game’s listing on the device your family will actually use. Confirm whether local co-op is supported on that version, whether two controllers are needed, and whether a physical copy requires a download or update. If buying digitally, make sure the console has enough storage for the listed edition and any required add-ons.
Set the child account and purchase password before launching Star Wars, since its ESRB entry notes in-game purchases. Review the store page together so children understand which characters or packs are included and which are optional. For either game, agree on who chooses the starting trilogy or character and how siblings will share turns if only one controller is available.
Finally, use the rating summaries as a conversation starter. Ask whether your child is comfortable with LEGO figures breaking apart, fantasy battles, spiders, snakes, ghosts, crude humor or comic mischief. A parent who knows a child’s particular fears can make a better decision than an age label alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common buying mistakes
Assuming every version is identical
Store pages can describe different platforms, editions and regional releases. Harry Potter’s remastered compilation and Star Wars’ multiple editions should be checked separately. A Japanese physical-release announcement is not evidence of current availability in another country.
Using a sale price as a permanent value claim
Prices and promotions change. Compare the current regional storefront price and the included content on the day of purchase. A captured price cannot establish what the game costs your family now.
Treating an E10+ label as a complete suitability test
The rating is a useful baseline, not a substitute for knowing your child. Use the specific descriptors and summaries, especially if fantasy combat, spiders, snakes, ghosts, crude humor or purchase prompts are concerns.

Final recommendation by priority
| Your family’s priority | Better starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Strong Harry Potter attachment | Harry Potter Collection | Two games cover Years 1–7 and center on spells, potions, lessons, puzzles and duels. |
| Strong Star Wars attachment | Skywalker Saga | All nine saga films, selectable starting trilogy, planetary exploration and a broad roster. |
| Vehicles and free-form exploration | Skywalker Saga | The official page lists more than 100 vehicles, 23 planets and quests. |
| Magic-focused puzzle play | Harry Potter Collection | The official description emphasizes spell-casting, potion-making, lessons and puzzle-solving. |
| Two-player local play | Either, after checking platform | Both cited listings support one to two players, but the documented platforms differ. |
| Sensitivity to specific humor or fantasy threats | Decide from descriptors | Harry Potter lists Crude Humor; Star Wars lists Comic Mischief and In-Game Purchases, with both listing Cartoon Violence. |
For most families, the best answer is therefore conditional: Harry Potter Collection for Potter-focused magical school adventures; Skywalker Saga for Star Wars-focused exploration and breadth. Confirm the platform, edition, player count and rating details before checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Skywalker Saga include all nine Star Wars films?
Yes. Nintendo describes the game as retelling all nine films in the Skywalker Saga and says players can choose which trilogy to begin with.
Does Harry Potter Collection include downloadable content?
Warner Bros. Games’ Japan announcement says the remastered compilation includes the two Harry Potter games plus previously released Character Pack and Spell Pack content. Verify the contents of the local listing because regional editions can differ.
Are the games suitable for a child who dislikes scary fantasy imagery?
Review the ESRB summaries rather than relying only on the E10+ label. Harry Potter mentions ghosts, spiders, trolls, giant snakes and wizard battles. Star Wars mentions punches, blasters, lightsabers and staffs, with defeated characters breaking into LEGO pieces. Individual sensitivities vary.
Does The Skywalker Saga require extra purchases?
The ESRB listing notes In-Game Purchases, but that descriptor does not establish that an additional purchase is required to finish the story. Review the edition contents, enable purchase passwords or child-account restrictions, and treat character packs as optional unless your family specifically wants them.
Which game has more characters and vehicles?
The LEGO Group’s official page lists more than 300 playable characters and more than 100 vehicles for The Skywalker Saga, along with travel to 23 planets. The Harry Potter descriptions emphasize activities and story coverage rather than comparable roster counts.
