There is no universal winner. The LEGO PlayStation 72306 is the better display choice if you want a recognizable, buildable console centerpiece with hidden game scenes and a compact footprint. “Official PlayStation collectibles” is a category rather than one product: it includes finished statues, figures, art prints, apparel and other licensed merchandise in many sizes. Choose a collectible when a specific character, franchise or finished presentation matters more than building.
What you are actually comparing
The two sides of this comparison are not equivalent product types. LEGO PlayStation 72306 is one defined adult building set. Official PlayStation collectibles refers to a broad range of licensed products sold through different makers and channels. PlayStation’s official Horizon merchandise page, for example, shows a 1/6-scale Aloy statue made by Dark Horse and PureArts, a 1:4-scale Prime 1 Studio Stalker, a Prime 1 Aloy statue and Cook & Becker art prints, as well as LEGO merchandise. Those examples differ in scale, format, subject and display requirements. PlayStation’s Horizon merchandise page is therefore a useful illustration of the category, not a single competing model.

PlayStation describes PlayStation Gear as carrying licensed accessories and collectibles, while PlayStation Direct places LEGO PlayStation and LEGO ASTRO BOT in its Collectibles collection. The retailer or manufacturer listing for each item is the authority for its current size, price and stock; there is no standard “official collectible” specification. PlayStation’s official home page and PlayStation Direct’s collections page show how wide that umbrella is.

What the LEGO PlayStation 72306 includes
A console centerpiece in a compact footprint
LEGO identifies 72306 as an adult, near 1:1-scale display model based on the original PlayStation console and controller. The finished model is over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep. Those dimensions make width and depth the practical planning constraints: measure the shelf or desk surface, then leave enough clearance to reach the front buttons and remove the internal scenes.
The set’s 1,911 pieces make construction part of the ownership experience. Piece count is not a proxy for display quality; it tells you that the model is a substantial build rather than a small finished ornament. If you enjoy assembling and occasionally reconfiguring a display, that involvement is a benefit. If you want something ready to place immediately, a finished statue or print is the more direct format.
Hidden and revealed game scenes
Two removable dioramas are inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. They can be displayed separately or concealed inside the console, allowing the same object to read as a clean hardware replica or as a game-filled display. The controller plugs into the model, and the Open and Power buttons are functional according to LEGO’s product description. LEGO summarizes the intended use as: “Proudly display your model in your gaming room or office.” See the official LEGO PlayStation 72306 listing for the complete feature description.
Price and release timing
LEGO lists a US price of $179.99 on the product page. In its September 3, 2026 announcement, LEGO gave announced prices of $179.99 in the US, €159.99 in Europe and £139.99 in the UK, with Insiders Early Access scheduled for October 1 and general availability for October 4. The US product page still showed “Coming soon on October 4, 2026” in the information retrieved for this comparison, even though that retrieval was dated October 13. On October 17, stock and live availability should therefore be checked directly rather than assumed from the announcement. The dates and regional prices are announcement facts, not a guarantee that inventory is currently available.
What counts as an official PlayStation collectible
Finished character statues
The Horizon merchandise page demonstrates why a statue can look entirely different from 72306. It lists a 1/6-scale Aloy statue from Dark Horse and PureArts and a 1:4-scale Prime 1 Studio Stalker, alongside a Prime 1 Aloy statue. Scale describes the relationship to the depicted subject, not a shared shelf size: a 1:4 machine or creature can occupy substantially more space than a 1:6 human figure. Exact dimensions, prices and current stock are item-specific and are not stated consistently on the category page.

Prints and flat wall displays
Cook & Becker Horizon art prints on the same official page represent a different solution again. A framed print uses wall area rather than a deep shelf and can establish a franchise theme without adding a three-dimensional object to a desk. Framing dimensions, edition details, price and availability must be verified on the individual listing.
Merchandise beyond display figures
PlayStation Gear also covers licensed accessories and other branded merchandise. These may support a room theme, but they should not be treated as interchangeable with a statue or diorama. Before buying, identify the exact item, its measured footprint, mounting method and whether it is intended for display or everyday use.

Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck 76989
LEGO’s February 15, 2022 announcement describes Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck 76989 as a build-and-display model with 1,222 pieces. It stands over 34 cm high and includes a stand with landscape details, Aloy and a Watcher. That makes it a taller, vertical scene rather than a low console-shaped centerpiece. It suits a reader who wants a recognizable machine and character composition and has vertical clearance. The announcement is historical; it does not establish current stock or price. Read LEGO’s Tallneck announcement before relying on availability.
Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth 77037
The current US LEGO Horizon Adventures category lists set 77037 as a 768-piece build with Aloy, Varl, Shell-Walker and Sawtooth, plus two articulated machines. LEGO lists $44.99 in that category. Its character-and-machine arrangement is a different visual language from the 72306 console replica and does not substitute for a retro-hardware display. Regional pages can show different inventory or retirement labels, so verify the local listing and price. View LEGO’s Horizon Adventures category.
How to choose by display space
For a shallow shelf or desk
Start with the published 72306 footprint: 26 cm wide by 19 cm deep, with a height over 6 cm. The stated height is a minimum (“over 6 cm”), so do not design a clearance fit around exactly 6 cm. Reserve hand room in front if you intend to operate the buttons or pull out the dioramas. A framed print may be easier when the available surface is too shallow for 19 cm, while a statue’s actual base depth must be checked on its own listing.

For a tall bookcase
Tallneck 76989’s height of over 34 cm makes vertical clearance the first check. Measure from the shelf surface to the shelf above, including any stand or framing. A 1:4-scale statue can also require substantial height and depth, but the official category page does not provide one standard dimension; use the maker’s exact specification.

Art prints avoid the floor area and can be arranged as a gallery, but they require appropriate hanging hardware and a frame that protects the print. Do not infer paper size or frame weight from the merchandise category page. Select a print only after confirming the finished framed dimensions and the wall’s mounting limits.
How to choose by the experience you want
Choose the LEGO PlayStation model when building is part of the appeal
- You want an activity before the object reaches the shelf.
- You prefer a recognizable piece of gaming hardware over a single character.
- You value the option to conceal or reveal the Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes.
- You need a documented, relatively compact footprint rather than an unknown statue base.
Choose a finished collectible when the subject is the priority
- Your display is organized around Aloy, a specific machine or another franchise character.
- You want to unpack and place a finished object instead of completing a 1,911-piece build.
- You prefer sculptural presence, a framed image or a wall display to a console replica.
- You are willing to compare each item’s individual dimensions, price, stock and care requirements.
A practical decision framework
- Define the subject. Write down whether your display should represent PlayStation hardware, a particular game, a character, a machine or general brand identity. The 72306 answers the hardware brief; a Horizon statue, print or LEGO scene answers a character or world brief.
- Measure the location. Record usable width, depth and height, then subtract clearance for access, cable routes, frames or a removable diorama. Compare those measurements with the published 72306 dimensions or the exact collectible listing.
- Choose interaction level. Decide whether functional buttons, a plug-in controller and movable scenes matter. If not, a finished statue or print may use your time more efficiently.
- Set the regional budget. Use LEGO’s stated $179.99 US, €159.99 European and £139.99 UK announcement prices for 72306 as reference points. Do not assign a category-wide price to official collectibles; their prices are item-specific and not standardized in the cited listings.
- Check current status. Confirm that the item is in stock, sold in your region and not marked retired or unavailable. Historical announcements, category pages and retailer listings can change independently.
- Plan the composition. Leave visual breathing room around the centerpiece. A console-shaped model benefits from a clear horizontal surface; a Tallneck or statue needs vertical separation; a print needs wall area and a frame.
Display setup for the LEGO PlayStation 72306
Use the concealed mode for a clean hardware look
Place the console with the controller connected and the front accessible. Keep the diorama storage area unobstructed so the scenes can be removed without lifting the whole model. This arrangement works when the rest of your room already contains colorful objects and you want the PlayStation silhouette to read first.
Use the revealed mode for a story scene
Remove one or both game dioramas and position them where their details can be seen from the normal viewing angle. A lower shelf may require the scenes to sit closer to the front edge, while eye-level shelving can keep the console behind them. Because LEGO describes the dioramas as removable and displayable separately, you can change the arrangement without buying another set.
Protect access and small elements
- Keep the Open and Power buttons reachable rather than pressing against a wall.
- Do not place heavy objects on the console or controller.
- Dust with a soft, dry tool and avoid liquid cleaners around the moving or connecting parts.
- Keep small removable elements away from pets and young children when the display is not supervised.
These are sensible display practices, not claims from an independent durability test; the official product information does not establish long-term wear performance.

Display setup for statues, figures and prints
Confirm the base, not just the scale
A 1/6 or 1:4 label identifies relative scale but does not tell you the complete height, width or base depth of the finished piece. Check the individual maker’s measurements, including the stand, weapon effects and any extended pose. Leave room to lift the item safely and to view it without a shelf edge cutting across the composition.
Control light and traffic
Position three-dimensional pieces away from direct sunlight, radiators and busy routes where a shoulder or bag could catch an extended part. For prints, use glazing and hanging hardware appropriate to the frame’s weight. The official pages do not publish a universal material or care standard across all licensed makers, so follow the instructions supplied with the specific product.
Build a coherent franchise wall
When combining a statue with a print, repeat one visual cue—such as a Horizon landscape color or a shared frame finish—rather than crowding several unrelated logos together. The goal is a readable arrangement, not the maximum number of licensed items.
Cost, availability and what the sources do not prove
| Question | What is documented | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO PlayStation 72306 price | $179.99 US on LEGO’s product listing; announcement prices of €159.99 and £139.99 for the stated regions | Current stock, local taxes, shipping and any regional change |
| LEGO Horizon Tallneck 76989 | 1,222 pieces and over 34 cm high in the 2022 announcement | Current sale status and price |
| LEGO Horizon Adventures 77037 | 768 pieces and $44.99 on the current US category listing | Regional inventory, retirement labels and local price |
| Official statues, figures and prints | Examples and scales are shown on PlayStation’s Horizon merchandise page | Each item’s price, dimensions, stock, shipping, materials and return terms |
None of the cited official sources supplies a controlled comparison of attractiveness, construction quality, durability, resale value or long-term collectibility. Piece count, scale and licensing status should not be used as stand-ins for those unmeasured qualities.
Common buying mistakes
Treating “official” as a single size or price tier
Official licensing confirms the relationship to PlayStation; it does not make a statue, print and LEGO set physically interchangeable. Compare the exact product page, not the category label.

Buying from an announcement without checking stock
Release dates can pass while a page still shows a future label, or inventory can vary by region. The 72306 page’s “Coming soon on October 4, 2026” wording illustrates why a live check is necessary after the announced date.
Ignoring access space
A shelf can technically fit a 26 cm-wide model yet be too tight to remove a diorama or connect the controller. Measure working clearance as well as the object itself.
Using scale as a footprint estimate
Scale ratios do not account for pose, wings, weapons, machine legs or a display base. Request or locate finished dimensions before committing to a 1:4 or 1:6 statue.
Assuming more pieces means a better display
The 1,911-piece count describes the LEGO build’s complexity. It does not prove that the finished model is more attractive or durable than a finished collectible.
Which option fits common reader profiles?
| Reader profile | Most logical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Retro-console fan with a desk or shelf | LEGO PlayStation 72306 | Documented compact footprint, original-console form and hidden game dioramas |
| Horizon fan who wants a tall centerpiece | Tallneck 76989 or an individual Horizon statue | Character-and-machine emphasis; check height, stock and base dimensions |
| Collector who dislikes assembly | Finished statue, figure or print | Display format is ready-made, subject to item-specific specifications |
| Small-room decorator | 72306 or a framed print | Both have clearer planning logic than an unspecified large statue; verify exact measurements |
| Parent or shared household seeking an activity | LEGO set, with age and supervision considered | The build is part of the product experience; protect small removable elements afterward |
Verdict: choose the display story, not a supposed universal winner
Pick LEGO PlayStation 72306 when the object you want to show is PlayStation hardware itself, when a 1,911-piece build sounds enjoyable, and when a 26 cm by 19 cm footprint fits your furniture. Its functional buttons, plug-in controller and concealed or revealed Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes give one model several display modes.
Pick an official PlayStation collectible when your display needs a specific character, machine, game world or wall image, or when you want a finished piece rather than a construction project. The official Horizon range proves that choices extend from 1/6 and 1:4 statues to prints and LEGO scenes, so the right comparison is always between named products with verified dimensions and current availability.
For a second LEGO centerpiece, Tallneck 76989 is the taller, over-34-cm alternative, while 77037 is a smaller 768-piece character-and-machine scene listed at $44.99 in the US category. Neither is a substitute for 72306’s console identity. The best display is the one whose subject, footprint and ownership experience match the room you actually have.
