For a five-year-old, the best starting point is the LEGO City Advent Calendar 2026 (60510): it is the only identified 2026 option rated 5+, and its doors include simple instructions. Choose Friends for animal-and-character storytelling, Star Wars for a Mandalorian fan, and Harry Potter 76438 only if you are comfortable sourcing a retired set. No official LEGO product page publishes a standard number of minutes per day, so daily build time cannot be compared honestly as a fixed statistic.
This guide compares the current 2026 City, Friends and Star Wars calendars with the retired 2024 Harry Potter calendar, explains what the age labels and piece totals really mean, and gives a practical way to match a calendar to a child, a schedule and a budget.

At-a-glance comparison
The figures below come from official LEGO product pages accessed on October 18, 2026. “Pieces per day” is only the total divided by 24; the actual doors are not evenly allocated, so it is not a promise about any particular day.

The City calendar has the lowest listed age threshold. Friends has the fewest total pieces among these four, while Star Wars has the largest total among the identified 2026 releases. Harry Potter has the largest total in this comparison, but it is a 2024 product and is retired rather than a current 2026 release.

Which LEGO advent calendar is best for a five-year-old?
Choose City 60510 when age fit and independence come first
City 60510 is the clear age-match recommendation for a typical five-year-old because LEGO lists it as 5+. Its most useful accessibility feature is practical rather than numerical: each window has easy-to-follow building instructions printed inside the door. A child can open one compartment, read the visual directions and build without searching for a separate booklet.
“5+” is a minimum-age design recommendation, not a guarantee that every five-year-old will build alone. Fine-motor control, experience with small LEGO elements and patience vary widely. Plan to sit nearby for the first few days, especially when a model uses tiny parts or when a child becomes frustrated by a step. Once the routine is familiar, many children can handle the opening, sorting and construction with only occasional help.
Why the 6+ calendars may still suit an advanced five-year-old
Friends 42698 and Star Wars 75456 are both marked 6+. An experienced five-year-old may physically manage some of their models, but buying below the printed age rating means accepting more adult involvement. The decision should be based on the child’s demonstrated ability to follow multi-step pictorial instructions, keep small parts together and recover from a misplaced element—not simply on whether the child already owns other LEGO sets.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the calendar is intended as a family activity, a 6+ rating is less of a barrier: an adult can read the instructions, identify the pieces and let the child perform the steps that are comfortable. If the child is expected to open and build independently before school, stay with the 5+ City option.
Remember the under-three safety boundary
All of these calendars contain small parts. Children under three should not use them because of the choking hazard. Keep unopened doors, loose elements and completed mini builds out of reach of toddlers and pets, and avoid leaving a day’s pieces on a shared floor where they can be picked up accidentally.
What the piece counts tell you—and what they do not
Total pieces measure the whole box, not each day
A published piece count is useful for comparing the overall amount of building material. It does not mean that every door contains the same number of elements. A day featuring a small vehicle, creature or character may use only a few parts, while another day may assemble a denser structure. The 24 compartments distribute the workload unevenly.
The arithmetic averages in the table are therefore planning signals only. They can help you see that Star Wars and Harry Potter contain more total material than Friends, but they cannot predict whether December 8 will be quicker or slower than December 9. Do not promise a child that every opening will feel equally substantial.

Piece size and model type change the experience
Ten large, easy-to-identify elements can be faster to handle than ten tiny pieces that must be oriented precisely. Figures and accessories can also take longer to place than a simple plate-and-brick assembly because the builder is checking colors, hands, clips or printed details. A model’s visual complexity matters as much as its raw count.
For a younger child, a lower total is not automatically better. Friends has the smallest total in this comparison, yet its minidolls, animals and accessories create a play-focused experience rather than a purely quick one. Conversely, a higher total can be worthwhile for a child who enjoys longer construction and recognizes the theme.
Use the count to plan storage
Before December begins, designate a shallow tray, lidded box or divided organizer for each day’s parts. Keep the instruction panel or opened door with the model until the build is finished. If a piece falls under furniture, pause the session and retrieve it before opening the next compartment; mixing several days makes identifying a missing element much harder.
How long does a LEGO advent calendar build take each day?
LEGO’s checked product pages describe a 24-day structure and instruction format, but they do not publish a standard daily build time. There is no manufacturer-backed “minutes per door” figure for City 60510, Friends 42698, Star Wars 75456 or Harry Potter 76438. Any precise average presented without a timed test would be invented.

Why a single average would mislead
- Door contents are uneven, so one day can be a micro-build and another a more involved small model.
- A child building for the first time may need help identifying pieces or correcting an orientation.
- An experienced builder may finish the same instructions quickly but spend longer playing with the result.
- Sorting from a mixed pile, searching for a tiny element and recovering from an error add time that the instruction steps do not show.
- Reading ability, attention span and whether an adult is present change the session length.
A reliable way to plan your household routine
- Reserve a flexible daily window. Pick a period when the child is not rushed—after breakfast, after school or before a regular bedtime routine. Treat the window as an opportunity rather than a fixed appointment.
- Open only one door. Keep that day’s parts together and read the printed instructions before handling anything. This prevents a large pile from making a small build feel difficult.
- Stop at a natural point. If attention runs out, place the unfinished model and remaining parts in the labeled container. Finishing later is better than forcing a tired child to continue.
- Record your own baseline if timing matters. For one week, note the child’s age, prior LEGO experience, whether an adult helped and whether you timed sorting plus building. Use that household observation to plan the remaining days; do not present it as a universal LEGO statistic.
Piece totals and instruction wording can indicate relative workload, but only a clearly described, independently timed test could support a numerical estimate. No such test is represented here.
How the four themes differ in play value
City: open-ended everyday scenes
City is the broadest choice for children who invent their own stories about vehicles, buildings, seasonal events or community helpers. The theme does not require knowledge of a film or television continuity, so a child can start playing immediately. That accessibility, combined with the 5+ rating and in-door instructions, makes 60510 the safest general recommendation for a first calendar.
Friends: characters and animals
Friends 42698 is built around social storytelling. Its contents include three minidolls and six animal figures, giving a child ready-made characters and relationships to act out. Choose it when the child enjoys caring for animals, role-play and named characters more than assembling vehicles or action scenes. The 6+ rating means younger children may benefit from an adult at the table.
Star Wars: franchise recognition
Star Wars 75456 focuses on The Mandalorian with themed mini builds and characters. It is a strong choice when the child already recognizes the setting and will value recreating that world. Franchise enthusiasm can be a powerful motivator: a child may persist with a fiddly step because the finished model is meaningful to them. It is still a 6+ product, so check whether the intended builder can manage the instructions or will have help.

Harry Potter: a retired historical option
Harry Potter 76438 is a 2024 set rated 7+. Its format combines 16 mini builds with eight characters and uses pictorial instructions. Because LEGO lists it as retired, availability, packaging condition and price depend on secondary-market listings rather than a normal current release. Verify that all 24 doors are sealed or that the seller clearly states what is included; a missing compartment can spoil the daily sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Instructions and independence
Instruction design affects whether a child experiences the calendar as a daily success or an adult-led project. City explicitly places easy instructions inside each door. Harry Potter’s official description specifies pictorial instructions. The Friends and Star Wars product information confirms 24 surprises but does not establish an equivalent claim about printed instructions inside every window.
Set up a low-friction build station
- Use a light-colored tray so dark or transparent elements are visible.
- Provide a small cup for loose accessories and a separate space for completed models.
- Keep the calendar upright and open only the date being built.
- Have the child point to each illustration before placing a piece; this encourages checking rather than guessing.
- Photograph or label finished models if they will be dismantled later for storage.
When to step in
Offer hints before taking over: ask the child to compare the part with the illustration, rotate the model to match the viewpoint or look for a matching color. If a step is still unclear, build one example and let the child copy it. Adult hands should solve genuinely frustrating problems without turning the entire calendar into a demonstration the child only watches.
Choosing by child, not by headline piece count
| If your priority is… | Most logical choice | Reason | Trade-off to accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| A first calendar for a five-year-old | City 60510 | Lowest listed age rating and explicitly simple in-door instructions | It may feel less specialized than a franchise theme |
| Animals and character role-play | Friends 42698 | Three minidolls and six animal figures support stories | It is rated 6+, so a five-year-old may need help |
| Maximum 2026 piece total | Star Wars 75456 | Highest total among the identified 2026 calendars | More pieces do not guarantee longer or equal daily sessions |
| A Harry Potter fan seeking the older release | Harry Potter 76438 | Eight characters, 16 mini builds and pictorial instructions | It is retired, rated 7+ and requires careful secondary-market checking |
| Independent daily opening before school | City 60510 for an eligible child | Instructions are printed in each door and the age threshold is lowest | Adult supervision is still sensible for small parts |
Buying, availability and condition checks
Retail price, stock status, purchase limits and “available now” labels are time-sensitive. Recheck the exact model number immediately before buying rather than relying on an old listing or a search result that combines several years’ calendars. A lower price can reflect a damaged box, an opened door or incomplete contents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor current 2026 calendars
- Confirm the listing says City 60510, Friends 42698 or Star Wars 75456, not a similarly named prior-year calendar.
- Check the seller’s stated region, delivery date and return policy; seasonal stock can disappear quickly.
- Inspect photographs for an intact calendar and an unopened sequence of doors.
- Keep the receipt until all 24 compartments have been checked.
For retired Harry Potter 76438
- Ask whether the box is sealed and whether all doors remain unopened.
- If it is opened, request confirmation that the 16 mini builds, eight characters and instructions are present.
- Compare the seller’s condition description with photographs, especially corners, seals and crushed windows.
- Factor in the risk of missing or substituted pieces before treating a higher asking price as good value.
Common problems and practical fixes
A child cannot find a piece
Have the child empty that day’s contents onto a tray, compare each element with the illustration and check the floor and clothing. Do not open another door to borrow a replacement; that can create two unresolved problems. If a part is genuinely missing, keep the packaging and contact the retailer or LEGO support with the set number and the specific step.
The model will not match the picture
Back up one instruction step rather than dismantling everything. Check orientation, mirrored sides and whether a plate is offset by one stud. Many apparent errors come from viewing the model from the opposite side of the illustration.
The child loses interest after several days
Let the child choose a consistent time, invite a sibling or adult to build alongside them, and use completed models in a short story. Avoid opening multiple doors to compensate; the anticipation is part of the calendar’s design. If interest does not return, store the unopened compartments safely and revisit them later.
A toddler reaches the calendar
Move the calendar to a high, stable location and sweep the build area for loose elements after every session. A closed door is not childproof packaging once parts are accessible through an opened compartment.
A simple decision checklist
- Is the child at or above the printed minimum age?
- Will an adult be available when the instructions or pieces become difficult?
- Does the child prefer everyday scenes, animals and characters, Star Wars or Harry Potter?
- Would a higher total piece count add enjoyment, or would it make daily sorting tiring?
- Can you provide a tray and secure storage for 24 days of small parts?
- Are you buying a current release, or have you verified the condition of a retired set?
- Are you avoiding promises about a fixed number of minutes per day?
If the answers point to age-appropriate independence and broad play, choose City 60510. If the theme is the main source of excitement, choose Friends or Star Wars despite the 6+ rating and plan to help. Select Harry Potter 76438 only when its retired status and seller condition have been checked carefully.
