The most straightforward legal ways to play classic console games today are official retro-game libraries, platform backward compatibility, and licensed ports, remasters, or collections. Start with the exact game you want and the device and region you use: catalogs, subscription tiers, download options, and hardware requirements differ.
Choose a route based on the game you want
Before paying for a service or buying a collection, check whether it includes the specific original game—not just a sequel, remake, or title from the same franchise. Then confirm that it works on your device and is available in your region. Nintendo and PlayStation catalog examples below come from official US and UK materials; availability and terms can change.

- Official game library: Convenient if your title is included, but access may require a particular subscription tier and can depend on the service continuing to offer that title.
- Backward compatibility: Useful when a platform supports games from an earlier generation. Confirm the particular game and device are supported.
- Licensed port, remaster, or collection: Often the clearest option if you want a particular game without relying on a subscription catalog. Check the release’s platform and included titles.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch and Switch 2 can access Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, and Game Boy Advance libraries through Nintendo Switch Online. Virtual Boy is also listed, while Nintendo GameCube Classics is available only on Switch 2. The required membership tier varies by library. Nintendo’s UK FAQ specifies standard membership for NES, SNES, and Game Boy, and Expansion Pack membership for N64, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, SEGA Mega Drive, and GameCube. See Nintendo’s access guide and Nintendo’s UK FAQ for current details.

These games are available only while the account has an appropriate active membership. Nintendo says they can be played offline, but the console must reconnect to verify membership every seven days; some library software may require periodic internet validation. Nintendo also says the Virtual Boy library is available in the US and Canada, and its FAQ says a dedicated Virtual Boy accessory is required. Check regional and device compatibility before subscribing or buying an accessory.

Nintendo says there is no set schedule for adding games and that it has no plans to sell Nintendo Classics titles individually outside the service. Its FAQ also points to eShop games and packaged collections as other ways to find classic Nintendo and third-party titles. If you want lasting access to one specific game, look for an individually licensed release or collection and verify exactly what it contains. A compatible microSD Express card can add storage to Switch 2; a microSD card can add storage to Switch. Storage expansion does not provide access to games, and compatibility depends on the console model.
PlayStation
PlayStation’s US FAQ says PlayStation Plus Premium members can download or stream eligible Classics Catalog games. A wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only. Eligible Premium streaming is also available on PS4, PS5, or PC, but the catalog and availability vary by plan and over time; some games can leave the service. Check the title’s current listing before subscribing, especially if you need a download rather than streaming. PlayStation publishes a 5 Mbps minimum connection for cloud streaming; meeting that minimum does not guarantee a smooth experience. See PlayStation’s Classics Catalog FAQ.
Xbox backward compatibility on PC
On July 22, 2026, Xbox Wire announced an early-release PC backward-compatibility program. The announcement named four original Xbox games available for purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans. It also said digital licenses for those titles already owned on console carry over to PC or supported handhelds, and described access across Xbox console, cloud, PC, and handhelds. This was a limited launch lineup, not evidence that every classic Xbox game works on every device. Check the current Xbox listing for the specific game, device, and access terms. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.

For a named game, check its publisher or current rights holder for a release on your modern platform. A port may sell the game individually; a collection may bundle it with other releases. Verify the exact platform and included game list before buying, since a collection’s name or franchise theme does not guarantee it contains the original version you have in mind. Nintendo’s FAQ points to eShop releases and packaged collections as routes for classic Nintendo and third-party titles.
Check these details before you spend
- Confirm the exact title and region. Search the current catalog or product listing for the original game you want, and check availability where you live.
- Match it to your device. Check supported consoles, PC or handheld models, and any generation-specific restrictions; for example, Nintendo GameCube Classics is Switch 2-only.
- Understand the access model. Find out whether you are buying a licensed release or relying on a subscription, and which membership tier is required.
- Check download versus streaming. Streaming needs a suitable connection; some classic PS3 games in PlayStation Plus are streaming-only.
- Look for continuity and connection requirements. A subscription title can leave a catalog, and offline access may still require periodic online verification.
- Check extra hardware requirements. Confirm controller, accessory, storage, and supported-device needs for the particular route.
What about emulators, ROMs, and personal backups?
There is no universal answer that makes every emulator or every way of obtaining a game file legal or illegal. Nintendo UK defines emulators generally as software that lets another program run on a device it was not originally created for. The company warns that unauthorized emulators encourage unauthorized copies and says some circumvent security measures and are unlawful. That is Nintendo’s rights-holder position, not a general rule for every country, emulator, game file, or copying method. Read Nintendo’s legal information in that context.
That statement does not establish that owning an original cartridge automatically makes downloading a ROM lawful, or settle the rules for personal backups, game dumps, device modification, or circumvention. Those questions depend on jurisdiction and the specific conduct. For the most straightforward legal route, use an official service or a licensed release; for a specific legal question, consult authoritative guidance for your location.
