For online sports and racing betting in New Zealand, the lawful local provider is TAB NZ, including its Betcha brand. The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) says that, since 28 June 2025, those bets are prohibited online unless operated by TAB NZ. That means a ranked list of multiple local sports-betting sites would be misleading. Online casino gambling is a separate category with different rules and a transition period that changes on 1 December 2026.
Which online sports and racing betting sites are legal in New Zealand?
The DIA identifies TAB NZ as the domestic provider permitted to operate online racing and sports betting for customers in New Zealand. It specifically includes Betcha as a TAB brand. The restriction has applied since 28 June 2025. See the DIA’s online gambling guidance.

So, for this category, there is no evidence-based list of several legal local sites to rank: the official guidance identifies one provider. This article does not rank TAB’s products against each other because current odds, terms, app features, and service performance have not been established here.

The rules depend on the kind of gambling. The DIA says it is not illegal for someone in New Zealand to participate in online gambling through a website based overseas, but that does not make an offshore site a locally licensed sports or racing betting provider. Overseas companies must not offer online racing and sports betting in New Zealand under the restriction described above.

Using an offshore platform also does not guarantee protections equivalent to those available through a New Zealand-regulated service. The DIA warns that if a site is unlicensed, players will not have the same protections. If a dispute or fraud occurs, legal recourse can depend on the host country’s system and may be difficult or expensive to pursue. Read the DIA’s guidance for players before deciding whether to use an offshore service.
Are online casinos legal in New Zealand?
Online casino gambling is distinct from sports and racing betting, and its rules are changing under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026. The Act received assent on 28 April 2026 and came into force on 1 May 2026, according to the official legislation record.

Until 1 December 2026
According to the DIA, online casinos that were providing services to New Zealand customers before 1 May 2026 may continue during the transition until 1 December 2026. They must not advertise to people in New Zealand during this period. The DIA says overseas companies may continue offering online casino gambling during the transition, but they must not offer racing or sports betting in New Zealand.
From 1 December 2026
Up to 15 auction winners may operate under an exemption while their licence applications are assessed. That figure is a maximum number of auction winners eligible to apply, not a count of casinos already licensed. Other online casinos must leave the New Zealand market from that date.

Expected licensing from early 2027
The DIA expects to begin issuing online casino licences from early 2027 and says it will publish a public register. Until that register is available, do not treat an operator’s availability or its own claims as proof that it holds a New Zealand licence. Check the DIA register when published and verify an operator’s status before relying on it; licensing and transition details can change.
These dates and requirements are set out in the DIA’s online gambling guidance.

A site loading in New Zealand, accepting a deposit, or displaying sports markets does not establish that it is permitted to offer that activity here. Check the activity and regulatory status separately:

- For sports and racing, check the provider. The DIA identifies TAB NZ, including Betcha, as the domestic online provider for New Zealand customers.
- For online casinos, check the current transition date and register. Apply the DIA’s transition rules, and once its register is available, verify that the operator appears there and that its permitted activity matches what it offers.
- Review player terms and safeguards. Before depositing, look for clear age and identity checks, deposit and withdrawal conditions, a complaints process, self-exclusion and harm-minimisation tools, and accessible customer support. These checks help assess a service but do not substitute for confirming its legal status.
The DIA’s guidance explains that the protections available through offshore sites may differ and that recourse can depend on the jurisdiction where the operator is based.
