Games installed by that later deadline are expected to remain playable, but an uninstalled game cannot be downloaded again through Legacy Games after the cutoff. That is a narrower promise than the store’s “Yours to keep forever” slogan may suggest.
Legacy Games shutdown dates and what changes
The company’s closure FAQ sets out a two-stage shutdown. The store and several account benefits end first; the launcher’s download and installation window remains open for nearly two more months.

| Date | What Legacy Games says happens |
|---|---|
| December 1, 2026 | Last Game of the Month for Hero Club Superheroes and Ultimate Heroes. |
| December 31, 2026 | The store closes. Disc download codes can no longer be redeemed, and points, rewards, and Hero Club memberships end. |
| January 1, 2027 | The launcher is limited to downloading, installing, and playing purchased games. Purchasing packs and other functions are offline. |
| February 28, 2027 | Last day to download and install purchased games. The website and servers close after that date. |
The FAQ says games downloaded and installed by February 28 remain playable. It also warns that if a user uninstalls a game after that date, they will not be able to download it again. The available information does not establish whether a game can be restored from a backup, moved to another computer, or played without the launcher.

Legacy Games’ homepage uses the line “Amazing games. Incredible value. Yours to keep forever.” Its closure FAQ qualifies what that means during this shutdown: purchased titles can be downloaded and installed until February 28, 2027, and titles installed by then are described as yours to keep and play.
#1 Best Overall
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
That does not amount to an unlimited right to re-download a title after the service closes. In practical terms, the distinction is between having a game installed and having only an account record or code for it. The FAQ supports continued play for installed games, but does not promise a permanent download archive or portable copy.
What to do before the deadlines
- Redeem physical-disc codes by December 31, 2026. A code adds the game to your Legacy Games account, but redemption alone is not enough: you must also install the game through the launcher by February 28, 2027. Legacy Games’ FAQ says its physical discs are sold through Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
- Redeem any eligible Amazon Luna titles before the end of 2026. The FAQ says Luna games follow the same access rules as other Legacy Games purchases. Redeem them, then install them through the Legacy Games Launcher before February 28, 2027.
- Install every purchased game you want to keep by February 28, 2027. Legacy recommends installing titles while downloads remain available. Do not wait until the last day if you can avoid it; the stated cutoff is the final date, not a guarantee that every download will complete without a problem at the deadline.
- Use points and rewards by December 31, 2026. Hero Club membership and perks also end then. The FAQ says renewal charges will not occur starting January 1, 2027.
What remains uncertain about backups and future play
Legacy Games’ FAQ does not explain whether users can copy installed game files to another computer, restore them from a backup if the original machine fails, or launch them without the Legacy Games Launcher. It also does not establish that an external drive or other generic backup method will preserve a working, transferable game. Avoid relying on an assumed backup procedure as a substitute for the company’s stated installation deadline.
