A Ledger PIN unlocks a specific Ledger signer; the Secret Recovery Phrase is the backup credential for restoring access to its associated accounts if the signer is lost, damaged, or reset. They are not interchangeable: someone with both the signer and its PIN can access accounts, while someone who obtains the recovery phrase can use it to access the wallet accounts. Ledger’s published guidance describes these protections; it is not an independent security audit.
Ledger PIN vs. recovery phrase at a glance
| Question | Signer PIN | Secret Recovery Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Unlocks a particular Ledger signer. Ledger’s PIN guidance | Restores access to associated accounts, including after the signer is lost or reset. Ledger’s phrase guidance |
| If exposed | A person also needs access to the signer to access accounts, according to Ledger. | Anyone who obtains it may access the associated accounts, according to Ledger. |
| If forgotten or unavailable | Three incorrect PIN entries reset the signer and erase its account information. Recovery then depends on the phrase. | The user-held recovery route is unavailable if the phrase is lost. Ledger separately offers an optional recovery service. |
| How to handle it | Memorize it if practical; if recorded, store it offline. | Keep it private and offline, with a secure backup protected against loss or damage. |
What does a Ledger PIN protect?
The PIN is the local access control for a particular signer. Ledger says someone who has both the signer and its PIN can access the accounts. It is not a backup credential: knowing or resetting the PIN does not recreate a lost recovery phrase.

Ledger says three incorrect PIN entries automatically reset the signer and erase its account information. After a reset, the accounts can be restored using the Secret Recovery Phrase, and a new PIN can be chosen during initialization. Ledger advises memorizing the PIN and, if it must be recorded, keeping it offline rather than in cloud storage or on an internet-connected phone or computer. What does the recovery phrase protect?
The phrase is the backup route to the accounts associated with the signer. It matters if the device is unavailable, damaged, or reset. Its recovery power also makes it highly sensitive: Ledger says anyone with access to the phrase can access the accounts. A phrase is not an ordinary password that customer support can reset for you.

Ledger’s article How to Keep Your Seed Phrase Secure, updated November 26, 2025, uses “seed phrase” as another term for the recovery phrase.
Can you recover a Ledger without the PIN?
If you still have the Secret Recovery Phrase, Ledger’s documented recovery path is to initialize the signer and restore access with that phrase, then choose a new PIN. The PIN itself does not restore accounts. If you have neither access to the signer with its PIN nor a usable phrase backup, this user-held recovery route is unavailable; Ledger Recover is a separate optional service, not a replacement PIN.

How optional backup methods differ
These options do not change what the signer PIN does. They differ in who holds or can access recovery material, how recovery starts, and what happens if a physical backup is lost or damaged.
Ledger Recovery Key
Ledger describes Recovery Key as a physical, PIN-protected card that stores a copy of a 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase in a Secure Element. It communicates with compatible Ledger hardware via NFC. Ledger says three incorrect attempts wipe the card, and advises keeping the traditional recovery sheet as a fallback. The card is not a hardware wallet: it cannot manage assets or sign transactions. Its PIN protects the card and is distinct from the PIN that unlocks a signer. See What Is Ledger Recovery Key? for Ledger’s description. Ledger Recover
Ledger describes Recover as an optional, identity-based recovery service. Its FAQ says it distributes three encrypted fragments among separate companies and requires two fragments to restore keys on a Ledger device. Ledger also says Recover can restore private keys but cannot provide the user’s Secret Recovery Phrase. This is a service-based recovery arrangement, distinct from keeping a user-controlled phrase backup. Details are in Ledger Recover FAQ.

- Unlock the signer for use: enter that signer’s PIN.
- Restore access after loss, damage, or reset: use the Secret Recovery Phrase through the device initialization and recovery process.
- Protect against theft or unauthorized access: secure both credentials for their separate roles; a PIN alone does not replace the phrase, and a phrase copy must be kept especially private.
- Consider another recovery arrangement: understand whether it is a physical backup card or a service, what credential it depends on, and its failure modes before relying on it.
