Choose the Nano X for Bluetooth and phone use, Flex for a practical touchscreen, Stax for the largest display and wireless charging, or Nano Gen5 for Ledger’s newer touchscreen Nano design.
Ledger models at a glance
All five devices are hardware wallets: they are designed to keep cryptocurrency private keys inside a dedicated Secure Element rather than exposing those keys to a computer or phone. The important differences are how you connect, how you review transactions, whether a battery is available, what recovery accessories are included, and how much you pay.

Which Ledger should you buy?
Choose Nano S Plus for simple, wired cold storage
The Nano S Plus covers the basic job well: keep keys in a Secure Element and approve transactions with physical buttons while connected by USB-C. It is the least expensive model in this comparison. That makes it the sensible choice when your wallet will normally sit at a desk, you already have a compatible USB-C cable, and you do not need to pair directly with a phone.
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
The trade-off is deliberate simplicity. Its monochrome OLED is small, and every approval uses buttons rather than a touch interface. There is no Bluetooth, battery operation or NFC. Ledger does not include a dedicated Recovery Key with this model, so your backup process needs particular care during setup. If you rarely sign transactions and are comfortable with a wired workflow, the missing mobile features do not reduce its core cold-storage role.
Choose Nano X when your phone is part of the routine
The Nano X adds Bluetooth, a built-in battery and iOS support to the button-operated Nano format. Those features matter if you want to connect without a cable, approve transactions away from a desk, or use a phone as your primary companion device. It still uses a small monochrome OLED, so the display experience remains closer to the Nano S Plus than to the touchscreen models.
The extra cost is therefore paying for mobility, not a larger screen. Nano X is a good fit for someone who travels, moves between computers and phones, or considers a cable an ongoing nuisance. If you keep the device in one place and use a desktop, the Nano S Plus provides the more economical path.
Choose Flex for the most practical touchscreen upgrade
Flex is the middle ground between the Nano family and Stax. Its 2.84-inch flat 16-gray E Ink touchscreen gives you more room to inspect information and interact with the device than a Nano’s button-and-OLED combination. It supports USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC, so it can serve wired, wireless and contactless workflows.
Ledger lists Flex with a CC EAL6+ Secure Element, Transaction Check and an included NFC Recovery Key. Transaction Check is intended to help verify transaction details on the signer itself; it is especially relevant when you sign frequently and want a more deliberate review surface. Flex is the practical choice when readability and touch controls matter, but the Stax’s larger curved display and Qi charging do not justify the additional expense.

- Simply & securely take control of your digital assets and identity with the all-in-one Ledger Wallet crypto app and Ledger Flex touchscreen signer.
- Digital asset control at your fingertips: manage 15,000+ crypto across multiple chains. Earn rewards. Top up & share with ease. Explore DeFi with confidence. Collect and showcase NFTs. Make informed choices with clarity.
- Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
- Cutting-edge design: monitor the market, compare rates, and Clear Sign transactions on the secure, high resolution, 2.8'' E Ink touchscreen.
- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
Choose Stax for the largest display and premium convenience
Stax is the flagship hardware design in this comparison. Its 3.7-inch curved 16-gray E Ink touchscreen is the largest display here, and it adds personalization options plus Qi wireless charging. USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC are all supported, so Stax is not limited to a single connection style.
Its security feature set matches the other next-generation signers: CC EAL6+, Clear Signing, Transaction Check and an included Recovery Key. The reasons to choose Stax are therefore primarily interface and convenience: a larger curved screen, a more distinctive form, personalization and the ability to charge wirelessly. It is difficult to justify the premium if you only make occasional wired transfers and do not value those characteristics.
Choose Nano Gen5 if you want a newer touchscreen Nano
Ledger describes Nano Gen5 as its 2025 Nano generation. It changes the familiar Nano formula by adding a 2.8-inch flat E Ink touchscreen while retaining USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC. It also carries the next-generation feature set: a CC EAL6+ Secure Element, Clear Signing, Transaction Check, Ledger Security Key app support and an included NFC Recovery Key.
Because Ledger’s comparison material does not state a current regional price, compare the live price in your market with Flex before ordering. Nano Gen5 makes the most sense when you want the smaller Nano form factor but prefer touch interaction and the newer connectivity and recovery package. Do not assume that “Gen5” automatically means the cheapest touchscreen option; the actual regional price determines that value judgment.
How the differences affect everyday use
Connectivity: wired, Bluetooth or NFC
USB-C works on every model, so all five can use a cable-based workflow. Nano S Plus is the only wired-only device. Nano X adds Bluetooth, while Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 add both Bluetooth and NFC. Bluetooth and NFC change convenience, not the fundamental ownership model: the Secure Element still protects the private keys, and approvals still happen on the hardware device.

- More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
- Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.
- Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
- Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
NFC is most relevant when your phone or another compatible device supports a contactless workflow. It should not be treated as a replacement for every USB-C use case. If you want the broadest set of connection options, the three next-generation signers—Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5—are the choices Ledger identifies with USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC.

The Nano S Plus and Nano X use small monochrome OLED screens with buttons. They are adequate for confirming information, but they require more button navigation and provide less visual space. Flex and Nano Gen5 use flat E Ink touchscreens; Stax uses a larger curved E Ink touchscreen. E Ink is the common display technology for the next-generation models, with 16 gray levels rather than a color panel.
Screen size does not by itself determine security. It changes how easily you can read and review a transaction before approving it. A larger screen may be more comfortable for frequent signing, while a small screen may be perfectly adequate for occasional transfers.
Battery and charging
Nano X includes a battery, which supports its mobile design. The other Nano model is designed around USB-C use. Stax is the only model in this comparison with Qi wireless charging. Flex and Nano Gen5 provide newer touch and wireless connectivity features, but the supplied specifications do not identify a battery or Qi charging for either one.
Recovery accessories and backup responsibility
Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 include an NFC Recovery Key. Nano S Plus and Nano X do not include that Recovery Key accessory. The included accessory is a convenience for the backup workflow; it does not remove the need to follow the device’s recovery instructions carefully or to protect your recovery information from anyone else.

- Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).
Ledger Recover is a separate, optional subscription service provided by Coincover. It is not the same thing as keeping a self-custodied recovery seed, and subscribing to it should not be presented as equivalent to maintaining your own offline backup. Decide which recovery model you want before storing significant assets, and understand what information each method requires and who can access it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security: what is shared and what is different
Ledger describes its hardware wallets as protecting private keys with a Secure Element chip. Ledger’s buying guide says the three next-generation signers—Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5—share the same EAL6+ Secure Element, full Clear Signing, Transaction Check and Ledger Security Key app support. That common architecture means there is no single model that can honestly be labeled “the safest” solely because it has a larger screen or costs more.
The published certification levels are not identical across the range. Nano S Plus is listed with CC EAL6+, Nano X with CC EAL5+, and Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 with CC EAL6+. Certification is one part of the comparison; your ability to verify what you are signing, keep recovery data private and maintain an uncompromised device workflow also matters.
Clear Signing and Transaction Check
Clear Signing is included in the next-generation feature set identified by Ledger. Transaction Check is listed for Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 and is designed to support transaction verification on the signer. These features are most valuable when you sign often or interact with complex applications. They do not make it safe to approve an address or amount you have not independently checked.

App and asset support can change
Supported assets and application behavior can change with firmware and Ledger Wallet updates. Treat compatibility as a moving requirement: check the current Ledger Wallet documentation for the assets and operating system you use before buying, particularly if a specific token, network or mobile platform is essential. The model comparison alone does not establish permanent support for every asset.
A decision framework by use case
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest upfront cost and occasional desktop use | Nano S Plus | It provides wired USB-C cold storage with the lowest published price in this group. |
| Bluetooth and iPhone or phone-first use | Nano X | It adds Bluetooth, a battery and iOS support while retaining the compact Nano format. |
| Touchscreen without flagship pricing | Flex | It combines a flat 2.84-inch E Ink touchscreen with Bluetooth, NFC and next-generation security features. |
| Largest display and wireless charging | Stax | It is the only model listed with a 3.7-inch curved display, personalization and Qi charging. |
| Newer compact touchscreen design | Nano Gen5 | It offers a 2.8-inch flat E Ink touchscreen and the next-generation feature set; verify its current regional price. |
Buying and setup checks that prevent avoidable mistakes
- Decide your connection pattern first. If you will always use a computer and cable, Bluetooth and NFC may add little value. If you expect phone-based signing, eliminate the wired-only Nano S Plus from your shortlist.
- Choose your review interface. Button-operated OLED devices are compact and economical. Touchscreen E Ink models cost more but provide a larger, more deliberate surface for reading and approving details.
- Check the current Ledger Wallet requirements. Confirm that your operating system, phone and intended assets are supported at the time you buy; firmware and app updates can change compatibility.
- Plan recovery before transferring assets. Decide where your recovery information will be stored, who can access it and how you will protect it from loss, copying or physical damage. An included NFC Recovery Key is helpful on Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5, but it does not replace careful custody.
- Verify every transaction on the device. Read the destination, amount and network on the signer before approving. Clear Signing and Transaction Check can improve the review process on supported next-generation models, but they cannot correct an approval you make without checking.
- Reassess the total cost, not just the device price. Add any compatible cable, protective case or durable recovery-seed storage you need. The published figures are device prices and may not include taxes, shipping or regional charges.
Common mismatches to avoid
- Buying Nano X solely for “better security.” Its main advantages over Nano S Plus are Bluetooth, battery operation and iOS support; the published Secure Element certification is EAL5+ rather than Nano S Plus’s EAL6+.
- Buying Stax when you only need wired storage. Its premium is tied to the curved display, personalization and Qi charging, not a uniquely stated private-key architecture.
- Assuming every touchscreen model costs the same. Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 differ in display size, price information and availability. Nano Gen5’s current regional price is not established in the comparison material.
- Treating a Recovery Key or Ledger Recover subscription as a substitute for judgment. Recovery conveniences do not eliminate the need to protect backup information and understand the custody model you selected.
- Ignoring regional availability. The listed prices are Ledger figures, while current stock, seller quality and local pricing can vary. Confirm those details for your country before placing an order.
The bottom line for each buyer
Buy Nano S Plus if you want the least expensive, wired-only route to hardware-backed cold storage. Pay for Nano X when Bluetooth, battery operation and iOS phone use will materially improve your routine. Flex is the balanced touchscreen choice, Stax is the premium display-and-charging option, and Nano Gen5 is the newer compact touchscreen model whose value depends on its current local price. None is universally safest: select the device whose connection method, review interface and recovery process you will use consistently and correctly.
