LED vs. T5 vs. Metal Halide Aquarium Lights: Which Is Best for a Reef Tank?

There is no universally best reef-tank light among LED, T5 fluorescent, and metal halide. Choose by how well a specific fixture delivers usable light across your aquarium at the corals’ positions, then weigh heat, electricity, maintenance, control, appearance, and cost. A historical fixture comparison shows why technology labels and peak PAR alone cannot decide the question.

What matters more than the lighting category

Corals that host photosynthetic organisms depend on light as part of their nutrition. Red Sea says photosynthetic organisms provide “up to 85%” of the nutrition for most corals; that is the manufacturer’s statement, not a universal independently verified figure. Red Sea: True REEF-SPEC

For a useful comparison, start with the tank’s length, width, and depth, and the places where corals will sit. Look for a PAR map or measurements taken at a mounting height and tank footprint similar to yours. PAR at one bright spot does not tell you how much of the aquarium receives suitable light: coverage, gradients, fixture length, reflectors or optics, and water depth all matter. The historical fixture comparison reported different distribution patterns, including elongated coverage from its six-lamp T5 setup and a broader pattern from its tested metal-halide reflector than from the tested LED fixtures at a specified threshold. Those observations apply to the fixtures tested, not every fixture of each type. Reefs.com Magazine: Quantitative Comparison of Lighting Technologies

  • Compare PAR at several coral positions, not just the peak reading.
  • Decide whether you need even coverage or a useful range of brighter and dimmer zones.
  • Check the fixture’s dimensions, mounting height, optics or reflector, and the aquarium’s depth.
  • Treat wattage, spectrum labels, and “equivalent to” claims as incomplete unless the measurement conditions and coverage are comparable.

How the three lighting types compare

Lighting type What to weigh Illustrative historical measurement
LED Potentially efficient, controllable, and associated with less heat transfer to the water, according to a retailer’s guide. Directional output can create strong contrast or scalloping, so check optics, spread, and appearance in your setup. Bulk Reef Supply: Buyer’s Guide to Reef Tank LED Lighting Philips: Perfect light balance Reefs.com measured 110 W for a 24-inch Eco-Lamps KR92 LED fixture, with a peak of 224 µmol/m²/s at the article’s stated 24-inch measurement position. This is an example for that fixture and test, not a general LED figure. Reefs.com Magazine
T5 fluorescent Evaluate tube combination, fixture length, and light spread over the tank. Tubes need replacement; check compatible tube availability and cost for the particular fixture. The available sources do not establish a current controlled comparison of T5 heat or operating costs against the other technologies. Reefs.com measured 254 W for an ATI 36-inch Power Module with six 39 W lamps, with a peak of 220 µmol/m²/s at the article’s stated measurement position. This is not a universal T5 consumption or output figure. Reefs.com Magazine
Metal halide Assess the lamp, ballast, reflector, mounting height, coverage, and heat-management needs as a system. Check compatibility and replacement options for the specific equipment. The available sources do not establish a current controlled comparison of heat or operating costs against the other technologies. Reefs.com measured 306 W for a 250 W double-ended Ushio 14,000 K lamp with a LumenMax 3 reflector, with a peak of 278 µmol/m²/s at the article’s stated measurement position. This is a measurement of that setup, not of metal halide systems generally. Reefs.com Magazine

The Reefs.com comparison is historical, and includes equipment such as the PFO Solaris I5, which is no longer in production. Its readings help explain why measured coverage and fixture-level power matter; they are not benchmarks for today’s products or a current head-to-head ranking.

Choose by your tank and priorities

LED may suit you if control and heat management matter

Retailer guidance identifies efficiency, smart control, and avoiding routine lamp replacement as potential LED advantages. These are not guarantees across all products: check the fixture’s specifications, service life, warranty, and PAR distribution. Directional lighting can also produce a more contrast-heavy look or scalloping, which may or may not suit your preferred appearance. Bulk Reef Supply: Buyer’s Guide to Reef Tank LED Lighting Philips: Perfect light balance

T5 may suit a fixture layout that matches your footprint

Assess whether the fixture length and lamp arrangement deliver appropriate coverage across the coral locations in your tank. Include compatible replacement tubes and their cost in the ownership comparison. The historical test’s elongated distribution is specific to its six-lamp, 36-inch configuration; it does not establish that every T5 setup spreads light the same way.

Metal halide may suit a setup whose reflector and heat needs are manageable

Judge the lamp and reflector together, along with mounting height and how the light reaches the aquarium. The historical test’s broader distribution describes its particular reflector setup, not a technology-wide advantage. Consider the tank’s heat-management capacity and confirm lamp and ballast compatibility for the equipment you are considering.

How to make the final comparison

  1. Map the aquarium. Note its length, width, depth, and the positions and types of corals you intend to keep.
  2. Compare coverage evidence. Seek PAR readings or maps for each candidate at a similar mounting height and across a comparable footprint. If possible, measure at several positions in your aquarium.
  3. Check the whole system. Include optics or reflector, fixture length, lamps or tubes, mounting, heat-management needs, and replacement availability—not just the lighting technology name.
  4. Settle the practical trade-offs. Compare measured electrical consumption for the specific fixtures, maintenance needs, control options, appearance, and purchase and replacement costs. Do not treat the historical wattage readings above as current product comparisons.
  5. Plan any change cautiously. Do not make abrupt intensity changes based only on whether the new system is LED, T5, or metal halide. Output and coral acclimation depend on the specific aquarium and fixture; no universal acclimation protocol is established here.

What current evidence can and cannot tell you

The historical Reefs.com article supplies fixture configurations and measured power and PAR distribution, but it cannot rank contemporary products. Bulk Reef Supply’s guide is retailer educational material, useful for purchase considerations but not independent testing. Philips discusses an optical appearance issue, while Red Sea’s nutrition figure is a manufacturer claim. The sources cited here do not establish current controlled performance rankings, a current price survey, or a universal energy-cost comparison for these technologies.
