For most Christmas trees, LED strings are the better practical choice because they generally use much less electricity and are less likely to burn out or break. Traditional incandescent strings can still be the right pick when you specifically want their familiar warm glow, a particular bulb style, or a vintage look. The safest choice is not determined by LED technology alone: check the construction, safety testing, condition, indoor/outdoor rating, and connection limits of the exact string you plan to use.
LED or incandescent: the short answer
“Traditional string lights” normally means incandescent mini-lights: electricity heats a small filament inside each bulb until it glows. LEDs create light with light-emitting diodes and electronic components. Both can decorate a tree successfully, but they suit different priorities.

| Priority | Better starting point | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Lower electricity use for a long display season | LED | Wattage printed on the specific string and your expected hours of use |
| Fewer burned-out bulbs and less breakage | LED, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) | Condition of the wire, sockets, plugs, and any replaceable bulbs |
| A particular warm color, bulb shape, or vintage appearance | Whichever actual strand matches your room | Color, brightness, bulb form, spacing, and lens finish |
| Outdoor decorating | Either technology, if the product is rated for outdoor use | Recognized-laboratory safety mark, outdoor certification, weather-resistant construction, and a GFCI-protected supply |
| Lowest purchase price | Depends on the model and length | Compare total cost, not only the shelf price: wattage, replacement parts, durability, and the maker’s connection instructions |
There is no universal appearance winner. Two LED strands can look dramatically different, just as two incandescent strands can. Treat the label and the actual light output as more reliable than the technology name alone.

How the two technologies make light
Incandescent strings
An incandescent bulb passes current through a fine filament. The filament becomes hot enough to glow, producing the familiar point of warm light. Heat is a normal part of that process, so the bulb, socket, and surrounding materials should have clear space and should be used only in the setting allowed by the instructions.

Warm tips: Please kindly protect these string lights from immersing in water and keep the plug dry
LED strings
An LED uses a semiconductor diode rather than a heated filament. A small electronic circuit limits and distributes current so the diodes can operate from the string’s supply. The visible result depends on the diode, diffuser, color coating, and lens design; “LED” does not specify whether a strand is soft white, daylight white, multicolor, faceted, frosted, or clear.
Why one failed bulb does not behave the same way on every string
Holiday strings commonly use series-parallel wiring. In a conventional incandescent string, a failed filament can open the circuit, so manufacturers may use a shunt that allows current to continue through that bulb position. DOE explains that LED strings typically do not use the same shunts; a failed LED typically short-circuits instead. The exact behavior still varies by product, so use the supplied replacement procedure rather than assuming a failure pattern from the technology label.
Electricity use and what the savings really mean
DOE reported in its December 16, 2015 explainer How Do Holiday Lights Work? that LED holiday light strings consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent strings. That is a general comparison from that publication, not a guarantee that every modern pair has exactly a 70 percent difference. The wattage printed on each candidate string is the number that matters for your tree.
DOE also gave an illustrative scenario: lighting a six-foot tree for 12 hours per day over 40 days cost $0.27 with LEDs versus $10 with incandescent lights. Those figures belong to the assumptions and electricity price used in the 2015 article. They are not a current national price forecast. Your result changes with the strings’ wattages, the number of strands, daily schedule, season length, and local electricity rate.
Calculate your own operating cost
- Read the wattage in watts (W) on each string. If the label lists several strings together, use the total for the set you will actually run.
- Multiply total watts by the number of hours the lights will be on.
- Multiply by the number of display days.
- Divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours.
- Multiply by your electricity provider’s price per kilowatt-hour.
In compact form: (total watts × hours per day × days) ÷ 1,000 × your rate. Use the same schedule and rate for both technologies when comparing them. A timer can reduce either type’s operating time, but it does not change the string’s wattage.

Purchase price versus lifetime cost
An incandescent strand may be inexpensive to buy, while an LED strand may reduce electricity use over repeated seasons. Whether the difference pays back for you depends on the model price, length, operating schedule, local rate, and how many seasons the product remains serviceable. Keep the receipt and the instructions, and compare like for like: a 100-light strand is not a fair price comparison with a 50-light strand merely because both are labeled “Christmas lights.”
Appearance: choose for the tree and room, not the acronym
Color and color temperature
Look for the actual description—warm white, soft white, cool white, daylight, or multicolor—and view a lit sample when possible. “White” is not a standardized visual result across all manufacturers. A warm, slightly amber tone can complement traditional ornaments, while a crisp white may suit a modern room; either technology can offer multiple color options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBulb shape and lens
Mini-lights, faceted bulbs, teardrops, oversized bulbs, and opaque or clear lenses distribute light differently. A clear lens produces a sharper point, while a frosted or opaque lens can appear softer. Match the bulb scale to the tree: very large bulbs can dominate a small tabletop tree, while tiny mini-lights may disappear on a tall, wide tree.
Brightness and spacing
Check the number of bulbs, the distance between them, and any stated brightness information. More bulbs do not automatically create a better result if the spacing leaves dark sections or the strand overwhelms delicate ornaments. Lay the strand out on the floor before installation so you can judge its coverage and locate the plug and end connector.
Color consistency
If you need several strands, buy matching sets where possible. Different production runs can vary in white tone or multicolor balance. Connect only the number of strands permitted by the instructions; adding another strand to solve a coverage problem can exceed the product’s electrical limit.

Durability, burnout, and maintenance
DOE says LED holiday strings are less likely to burn out or break than conventional incandescent strings. That makes LED attractive for a tree that will be installed repeatedly, moved between storage and the living room, or left lit for many hours. It does not make an LED strand indestructible: plugs, insulation, sockets, connectors, and electronic components can still be damaged by crushing, moisture, pulling, or improper storage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Incandescent strings can continue operating when a properly designed shunt bypasses a failed filament, but a dark bulb still needs attention and a damaged socket or wire is not repairable by simply changing the lamp. LED products may use different circuitry and may have sealed or nonreplaceable modules. Read the product’s own replacement and repair instructions before removing a bulb or fuse.
Storage practices that protect either type
- Unplug the string before wrapping or inspecting it.
- Wind it loosely around a reel or a piece of stiff cardboard rather than sharply folding the wire.
- Keep bulbs, connectors, and plugs from being crushed under heavy decorations.
- Store the lights dry, away from rodents, chemicals, and extreme heat.
- Label each set with its location and any special connector or fuse information.
Safety is a product-and-setup question
LED technology by itself is not a safety certification. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identifies three observable characteristics relevant to seasonal lighting safety: minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection. CPSC says that lacking one or more of these characteristics presents an electrical-shock or fire risk. These requirements are discussed in relation to UL 588 for seasonal and decorative lighting; a technology label cannot substitute for a recognized safety test.
Before plugging in a strand
- Choose lights tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory and look for the applicable mark on the product or packaging.
- Inspect every socket, plug, connector, and section of wire. Reject sets with frayed or bare conductors, cracked insulation, damaged sockets, loose connections, corrosion, or heat damage.
- Confirm that the product is marked for indoor use, outdoor use, or both. Do not place an indoor-only set outside, even if it is an LED set.
- Follow the manufacturer’s maximum number of connected strings and any limits for extension cords, adapters, fuses, or replacement bulbs.
- Keep cords away from pinch points, door hinges, sharp roof edges, hot surfaces, and standing water.
Outdoor installations
CPSC recommends that outdoor lights carry certification for outdoor use and be connected to a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI)-protected receptacle or portable GFCI. A GFCI can reduce the danger from a ground fault, but it does not make a damaged string acceptable. Unplug the display before changing bulbs, replacing a fuse, moving a connector, or investigating a tripped GFCI.
Heat, combustibles, and unattended operation
Keep either type of light away from paper, dry greenery, fabric, and other combustible decorations unless the product instructions specifically allow the arrangement. Do not cover a power supply or connector with insulation or decorations. Turn the display off when you leave home or go to bed unless the manufacturer’s instructions and your local safety practice specifically provide otherwise.

Which lights fit common decorating situations?
A frequently used indoor family tree
LED is the sensible default when the tree will be lit for many hours each day or throughout several seasons. Select a warm-white or multicolor finish that matches the ornaments, then confirm the strand’s total wattage and length. The lower energy use is most valuable when the operating schedule is long.
A vintage-themed room
Start with appearance. If you want the glow and bulb proportions associated with older displays, compare actual incandescent and LED samples rather than assuming one technology will provide it. Some LED lenses are designed to imitate traditional colors, but the match depends on the specific product.
A small tabletop tree or narrow apartment tree
Prioritize short length, close but not excessive spacing, and a small bulb form. A long strand leaves excess cord to hide and can encourage unsafe daisy-chaining. Measure the tree and the distance to the outlet before shopping.
A large indoor tree
Calculate the number of strands and the connection limit before buying. Choose matching sets so color and brightness remain consistent. If the required length exceeds one product’s permitted connections, use separate outlet runs or a product specifically designed for the needed configuration.
Outdoor shrubs, eaves, or porch railings
Either LED or incandescent can work when the exact set is certified for outdoor use and installed with GFCI protection. Outdoor exposure makes insulation, connectors, strain relief, and weather instructions more important than the diode-versus-filament distinction.

A display in a home with children or pets
Use intact, safety-tested sets, route cords where they cannot be pulled or chewed, and secure connectors so they cannot become toys. Avoid damaged or repaired wires and keep loose bulbs and small removable parts out of reach.
A buying checklist for the exact string
| Label or feature | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Sets the general electrical and maintenance characteristics | Is the appearance acceptable in the actual room? |
| Total wattage | Determines operating energy and helps prevent overloaded connections | What is the wattage of the complete set, not only one bulb? |
| Length, bulb count, and spacing | Determines coverage and how many sets you need | Will it reach around the tree without excess cord? |
| Bulb shape, color, and lens | Determines the visual effect | Does it match the ornaments, room, and other strands? |
| Indoor/outdoor rating | Indicates the environment for which the insulation and construction are intended | Is the rating printed clearly on the set or package? |
| Safety testing mark | Shows evaluation by a recognized testing laboratory | Can you identify the mark and the applicable instructions? |
| Replaceable bulbs or modules | Affects maintenance after a failure | Are replacements supplied, and are they the exact specified type? |
| Fuse and overcurrent information | Helps protect the circuit and guides safe replacement | Does the product explain the fuse rating and procedure? |
| Maximum connected sets | Prevents exceeding the product’s electrical design | What limit does the manufacturer state? |
| Cord and connector condition | Damage can create shock or fire hazards | Are the insulation, sockets, plug, and strain relief intact? |
Safe installation procedure
- Plan the route. Measure the tree, railing, or roofline, identify the outlet, and decide where connectors will remain protected. Keep the planned run within the manufacturer’s length and connection limits.
- Inspect before mounting. With the string unplugged, check for frayed wires, bare conductors, cracked sockets, loose plugs, corrosion, and missing parts. Discard a damaged set rather than trying to make it safe with tape.
- Confirm the rating. Verify indoor or outdoor approval and locate the recognized-laboratory safety mark. For outdoor work, identify a GFCI-protected receptacle or use a portable GFCI.
- Test briefly at floor level. Plug the intact set into the intended supply, check the color and coverage, and unplug it before attaching it to the tree or structure. If it flickers, smells hot, trips protection, or behaves unexpectedly, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s support instructions.
- Mount without pinching. Distribute the strand so bulbs are not pressed against sharp branches, hinges, nails, or abrasive edges. Use purpose-made clips or ties that do not cut the insulation.
- Make connections as directed. Connect only the permitted number of sets, keep plugs and connectors away from water, and do not remove or bypass a fuse or protective component.
- Secure and switch off safely. Keep cords out of walkways and away from children and pets. Unplug before rearranging decorations, replacing parts, or storing the lights.
Troubleshooting without creating a hazard
The entire string is dark
Unplug it first. Check that the plug is fully seated, the receptacle or GFCI has not tripped, and any manufacturer-specified fuse is intact. If the set has a replaceable fuse, use only the stated type and rating. If the replacement fails again, or if the cord or plug is damaged, retire the string.
One bulb or one section is dark
Use the product’s instructions to identify whether bulbs are replaceable and which replacement is specified. Do not substitute a bulb with a different rating or force a bulb into a socket. On some series-parallel designs, a single failed component can affect a section; the wiring behavior is product-specific.
Recommended Free Tools
The lights flicker, smell hot, or trip protection
Unplug immediately and inspect the set only after it is disconnected. Do not continue operating a string that has heat damage, a burning odor, exposed wire, repeated fuse failures, or repeated GFCI trips. Contact the manufacturer if the set is within its support period; otherwise discard it according to local electrical-waste guidance.
The outdoor connection gets wet
Switch off the circuit before touching the connection. Move the connector to the protected location and follow the outdoor-use instructions. A weather-rated product still needs the installation method specified by its maker.
Make the decision in five minutes
- Write down the space. Note tree height, approximate circumference, outlet location, and whether the installation is indoors or outdoors.
- Set the operating schedule. Estimate hours per day and display days so wattage can be converted into an actual energy cost.
- Choose the visual target. Decide on warm or cool white, multicolor, bulb size, lens style, and spacing before comparing technologies.
- Compare matching products. Put similar lengths and bulb counts side by side, then compare wattage, safety marks, rating, connection limits, replacement policy, and price.
- Reject unsafe candidates. Do not buy or reuse a set with unclear safety information, damaged wiring, missing strain relief, inadequate overcurrent protection, or an indoor-only rating for an outdoor job.
For a typical indoor tree with no special visual requirement, choose a safety-tested LED string that has the color, bulb form, length, and spacing you want. Choose incandescent when its specific appearance is the deciding factor and you are prepared to account for its listed wattage and inspect it carefully. In either case, the individual product label and the condition of the installation matter more than the technology name printed on the box.
