In May 2024, the Times announced a reduction affecting nine of 16 art-production positions. The New York Times Guild linked the cuts to an automation tool called Claro, while Times management said employees were offered voluntary buyouts and that the change concerned workflow efficiency, not the newspaper’s AI initiatives.
What happened at The New York Times?
The staffing action involved nine of the department’s 16 art-production positions, according to a Guild memo reported by TheWrap. The Times announced the reduction in May 2024. On May 30, spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander said the nine employees were offered voluntary buyouts.

The Guild’s memo was obtained by TheWrap on June 12, 2024. It urged management to reconsider the reduction and argued that cost cutting could damage the quality of the newspaper’s visual journalism.

Why the Guild described the cuts as AI replacement
The Guild identified Claro, made by Pixometry, as the technology it believed could replace affected staff. Pixometry describes Claro as providing “highly professional server based automatic image enhancement, image workflow and image management solutions” and uses the phrase “Applied AI image intelligence.”

According to the Guild, Claro had previously been optional and a human employee reviewed the final result. The union argued that making the software central to the workflow represented a decision to substitute automation for trained art-production workers.
The reported work concerns technical image preparation such as photo toning and color correction. That is different from choosing which images to publish, assigning photographers, writing captions, or making other editorial judgments. The available reporting does not establish that Claro performed all of those jobs.
What Times management says
Stadtlander said the employees were offered “generous voluntary buyouts” and that the changes involved photo toning, color correction and expanded use of industry-standard tools that had already been in use for years.

“These changes involve the adoption of new workflows and the expanded use of industry-standard tools that have been in use for years — they are not related to The Times’s AI efforts,” Stadtlander said.
The Times did not deny that Claro was part of the latest workflow changes, but it rejected the Guild’s characterization that the reduction was connected to the newspaper’s broader AI efforts. That distinction leaves the central causal question unresolved: a named automation tool was present, but the evidence does not show that AI alone caused the job reduction.
Is the memo proof that artists were fired?
No. The memo is evidence of a union-management dispute, not proof of a completed AI substitution program.

- The reported action was a reduction in positions, with management saying the affected employees were offered voluntary buyouts; “fired” is therefore not an established description for every person involved.
- The Guild alleged that Claro enabled the cuts, while management attributed them to workflow efficiency and denied a connection to its AI initiatives.
- No public comparative dataset in the reporting shows Claro’s error rate, turnaround time, quality scores or effect on reader trust versus human production.
- The later status of the affected employees, the department’s final size and any post-June 2024 AI policy change were not established in the published accounts.
What work did the Guild say was at stake?
The Guild said art staff worked on every editorial image appearing in the print newspaper. It also claimed that the print operation generated more than 30 percent of company revenue. That revenue figure is a union assertion, not an independently verified Times financial figure in the reported material.

“The trained professionals in our department have played a vital role in these efforts, and Claro is not up to the task,” Kahley added.
Art director Audrey Razgaitis called discarding the staff “cruel” and said, “I thought we were better than this.” The Guild’s memo likewise said, “We are saddened by these cuts, and urge the company to reconsider its rush to sacrifice quality for profits.”

| Issue | Human art-production staff | Claro or similar workflow automation | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope of tasks | Staff performed production work on editorial images, with the Guild describing coverage of every print editorial image. | Automatic enhancement, workflow and image-management functions; management specifically mentioned toning and color correction. | The reported evidence covers technical processing, not the full range of editorial image decisions. |
| Quality control | The Guild said a human oversaw the final product when Claro was optional. | Automation can process images, but the published accounts do not state whether every final image retained human review after the change. | Human-review arrangements after the reduction are not established. |
| Labor effects | Nine of 16 positions were affected by the announced reduction; management described voluntary buyouts. | The Guild believed the software could replace affected roles. | The staffing reduction is documented; the extent of direct software substitution is disputed. |
| Transparency | The Guild publicly attributed the cuts to a cost-saving mindset and AI-enabled workflow. | Management said the tools were industry standard, had been used for years and were unrelated to its AI efforts. | The two sides agree on the reduction but not its cause. |
| Measured output | The Guild pointed to the department’s role in award-winning visual journalism. | No published error-rate or turnaround comparison was provided. | There is no basis in the reported material for a numerical performance verdict. |
How the episode fits the Times’s wider AI conflict
The staffing dispute occurred while The New York Times was engaged in a broader legal and strategic conflict over AI, including its lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. That context explains why the Guild and outside observers focused on the language of AI, but it does not establish that the art-production reduction was ordered as part of that litigation strategy or any single AI program.
Bottom line: what can responsibly be said
The strongest supported account is narrower than the headline claim: The New York Times announced a reduction affecting nine of 16 art-production positions in May 2024, and the Guild argued that Claro/Pixometry automation helped make those cuts possible. Management said the employees were offered voluntary buyouts and that the changes were workflow efficiencies unrelated to the Times’s AI efforts. Until the newspaper or the union provides additional documentation about the post-cut workflow and staffing decisions, saying that artists were fired to replace them with AI goes beyond what the reporting proves.
