League of Legends Worlds 2026 begins with a four-team, best-of-five double-elimination Play-In. Its winner joins 15 directly qualified teams in a 16-team Swiss Stage, where three wins earn a place in the Knockout Stage and three losses mean elimination. Eight teams reach the best-of-five, single-elimination Knockouts.

How does the Play-In work?
Four teams play a best-of-five double-elimination bracket for one place in Swiss. Double elimination means a team is not knocked out by its first match loss; the bracket gives it a route to continue, while the eventual Play-In winner advances.

The 2026 Play-In differs from the 2025 version. Riot’s 2025 handbook described a single-elimination best-of-five Play-In, while the 2026 materials specify a four-team double-elimination bracket.
How does the Swiss Stage work?
Swiss is a five-round, record-based stage involving 16 teams. A team qualifies for the Knockout Stage as soon as it reaches three match wins; it is eliminated when it reaches three losses. Teams therefore do not all play the same number of matches: a team can finish its Swiss run by reaching either threshold before the fifth round ends.
Riot lists best-of-one and best-of-three matches in Swiss. That is a match-format distinction: a best-of-one is decided by one game, while a best-of-three can last up to three games. The important Swiss record is the match result, not an individual game score.

Round 1: four draw tiers
The initial Swiss draw is scheduled after the Play-In on October 18. Riot calls the categories draw tiers. Tier 1 teams face Tier 4 teams, and Tier 2 teams face Tier 3 teams. Teams from the same region cannot meet in this opening round.
| Tier | Teams listed by Riot |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | GEN, AL, TLAW, G2 |
| Tier 2 | First CBLOL seed, TSW, HLE, BLG |
| Tier 3 | LYON, MKOI, T1, TES |
| Tier 4 | CFO, IG, DK, Play-In winner |
The CBLOL seed labels in Riot’s primer are provisional: the two CBLOL teams are not named there. The Play-In winner’s identity is likewise determined by the tournament bracket.
Rounds 2–5: pairings follow records
After Round 1, teams are paired randomly against opponents with the same win-loss record. The draw cannot create a rematch, so teams do not play the same opponent twice in Swiss. Same-region matches are allowed from Round 2 onward; the regional restriction applies only to the first round.

How are the Knockout teams paired?
The eight Swiss qualifiers enter a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket. Each match is a win-or-go-home contest: the winner moves on and the loser is out.

The other four qualifiers are randomly drawn into the remaining two quarterfinal matches. The draw does not describe every quarterfinal pairing as a full ranking based on the Swiss record; it sets the stated constraints and randomizes within them.
What does “seeding” mean at Worlds 2026?
There are two related but distinct ideas: regional seeding and the Swiss draw tiers. Riot says regional performance, including MSI results, informs Worlds 2026 regional seeding. The regional allocation includes three teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC and LPL; two from CBLOL; the MSI champion; and an additional team from the region that finished second at MSI. The MSI champion must still qualify through its home-region playoffs to retain the invite.

- UNIQUE POWERS: Each super hero in the game boasts a unique skill set and abilities, showcasing their individual powers and quirks. Explore the twisted dynamics of your favorite Marvel characters.
The Swiss tiers are narrower: they determine Round 1 pairings, not a complete ranking that sets every later match. Once Round 1 is complete, the Swiss draw is based on records, subject to the no-rematch rule. The Play-In draw is separate again: it is fully random, while Swiss Round 1 uses tiers and a same-region restriction.
