Riot treats another person playing Ranked on your account to raise its MMR as ranked manipulation. It also prohibits account sharing and lists escalating bans, Honor reduction, Ranked-reward consequences, and removal of boosting-related LP and MMR gains. If you earned a lower placement than expected while honestly trying your best, Riot says that alone is not smurfing; contact Player Support if you believe the result is significantly too low.
What counts as rank boosting in League?
Riot defines boosting as someone playing Ranked on an account that is not theirs in order to increase that account’s MMR. The definition applies whether or not the booster later gives the account back. Riot’s August 2025 developer update also describes this conduct as rank manipulation: Riot’s ranked update.

Someone else logs in to play Ranked
If a friend or paid player signs into your account and queues Ranked to raise its rating, that is boosting under Riot’s definition. Riot also says giving or selling an account to another person, or using an account created by another person, is account sharing; sharing associated with boosting or ranked manipulation may lead to enforcement.
A booster carries you through duo queue
Boosting is not limited to handing over your login. Riot’s FAQ includes a booster duo-queueing with someone on a smurf account to inflate the other player’s MMR. Riot calls being carried to a higher division by queuing with another account—typically a booster—“hitchhiking”; its 2025 developer post also calls it “bussing.” See Riot’s Ranked Play FAQ.

Rank manipulation is broader than account boosting
Riot’s ranked-manipulation category also includes deliberately deranking in Flex queue and using a deliberately deranked account to help another account climb. The key issue is manipulating ranked play or MMR, not simply that one player is more skilled than another.
Can you get banned for boosting?
Yes. Riot’s Ranked Play FAQ lists the following penalty schedule for both the boosted account and the player doing the boosting:

|---|---|
| First | 3 days |
| Second | 14 days |
| Third | Permanent ban |
Riot also lists Honor reduction, exclusion from the current season’s Ranked rewards (or revocation if rewards have already been received), and reversal of LP and MMR gains attributed to boosting. Riot says it may link penalties across accounts it is confident belong to the same player. These are the penalties Riot publishes, not a prediction of what will happen in an individual case; enforcement depends on its assessment and account history. The details are in Riot’s Ranked Play FAQ.

Is LoL boosting safe from detection?
No account-safety guarantee is supported by Riot’s guidance. Riot says its system does not decide whether boosting occurred based only on visible rank; it assesses account MMR, and major, unusual MMR changes over a short period can indicate boosting or ranked manipulation. Riot developer Phroxzon described the system this way in the October 6, 2025 FAQ: “Our system actually doesn’t take visual ranks into account at all and purely looks at the MMR of the account.” Riot does not publish the exact thresholds or complete detection logic in that FAQ.

Riot says it uses multiple signals to assess account sharing, and that a shared IP address alone is not enough to establish it. That does not make lending an account permitted: Riot identifies account sharing and boosting as policy violations.
Can someone else play Ranked on your account?
Riot’s definition of boosting covers another person playing Ranked on your account to increase its MMR. It also says account sharing or selling violates its Terms of Service. Do not give someone your credentials to rank the account up, whether the person is a friend or a paid booster.

Can you duo with a much higher-ranked friend?
Riot says a Challenger friend duo-queueing with someone on an alternate account to boost them is not allowed in Ranked. You can play normal Summoner’s Rift or other game modes together instead. The distinction is not simply that your friend is better; it is using ranked play to inflate an account’s MMR or carry it to a higher division.
Are alternate accounts allowed?
Riot says you may have multiple accounts if you create and level them yourself, do your best in placements, do not share them, and do not manipulate ranked play. Its 2025 developer update likewise says an account made and used by its creator is safe if the player does not deliberately derank it. A second account is not automatically boosting; how it is created and used matters.

What if your placements put you too low?
A low placement by itself does not mean you broke the rules. Riot’s example is a high-MMR player who honestly does their best in placements and lands in Gold: Riot says that result alone is not considered smurfing. If you believe you were placed significantly too low, contact Riot Player Support. Riot’s cited guidance does not promise a placement correction or a response time.
Rank expectations can also shift as Riot adjusts how MMR maps to visible ranks. In its March 2026 MMR-to-rank update, Riot said it adjusted rank/MMR distribution at both ends of the ladder, including moving some experienced players from Iron into Bronze and some higher-end Diamond players into Master. That context does not establish what rank any individual should receive.
Quick Recap
How to protect your account and handle an unexpected result
- Play your own placements. Make your best effort rather than intentionally losing or trying to land below your actual skill.
- Keep your account to yourself. Do not share or sell it, and do not use an account created by someone else.
- Avoid MMR manipulation. Do not use a booster, arrange a carry intended to inflate your rating, or deliberately derank an account.
- Ask Riot about a result that seems significantly too low. Contact Player Support rather than trying to alter the account’s rank through a third party.
