Starting with League of Legends Patch 26.20 on October 6, 2026, you can access replays only for matches you participated in. Riot says you can still download and watch your own replays in the League client, but other players and third-party apps or sites can no longer download them. That leaves coaches, analysts and creators without the same access to someone else’s match footage, though the scale of that impact has not been measured.
What changed in Patch 26.20?
Riot’s Patch 26.20 notes introduce “Private Replays.” The rule is based on participation: your replay access is limited to games you played in. Other players can no longer download your replays, and third-party apps and websites lose access to replay downloads entirely.

The change took effect with Patch 26.20 on October 6, 2026. It does not mean replays have disappeared altogether: Riot says you can continue to download and watch replays of your own matches through the League client.

Why is Riot restricting replay access?
Riot frames the replay change alongside new limits on third-party access to League’s game memory. In its support article about preventing unauthorized memory access, Riot says memory access has been abused to create cheats, bot farms and tools that harm player experiences. Riot’s stated goal is to protect game integrity by addressing vulnerabilities and directing third-party developers toward official APIs.

- Ergonomic ambidextrous design: Tournament-ready gaming mouse developed with esports pros and gamers for maximum comfort, control and durability
Those are Riot’s explanations; the company’s cited materials do not quantify the abuses or establish how much the replay restriction will reduce them. The restriction’s practical effect is clearer: people who depended on downloading another player’s match lose that route, including some coaches, analysts, viewers and creators. Available discussion is anecdotal, not a representative measure of how many people are affected.
What can you still use to review a match?
Your own matches in the League client
Riot’s supported option is to download and watch replays of games you participated in through the League client. If you are trying to review someone else’s match, the new rule does not provide a client-side exception.

Riot’s Replay API
Riot’s Replay API documentation describes controls for a local replay session, including playback state, rendering, sequences and recording. It concerns using a replay once it is available; it is not documented as a way to retrieve another player’s restricted replay. Riot’s developer policies describe permitted uses such as self-player statistics and training tools for reviewing one’s own match history and aggregate stats. They do not announce a replacement public API for downloading other people’s games.
Third-party replay services
Riot says third-party apps and sites lose replay-download access under Patch 26.20. OP.GG’s replay guide currently displays a notice that recording and playback are unavailable. Its described process also required the League client and OP.GG desktop app, recording to start during the active game, and a compatible patch for playback. That service notice can change, but it does not establish an alternative for downloading a restricted replay.

Riot’s policy and documentation do not confirm a workaround or replacement service for watching another player’s match. A recording device or screen recorder cannot retrieve a replay you are unable to access.
Does the April 2027 deadline mean third-party replays will keep working?
No. Riot’s April 2027 transition period concerns game-memory access for known and currently approved third-party tools—not continued access to replay downloads. Riot says it began preventing memory access by default for unknown third-party apps on October 6, 2026. It gives existing approved tools until April 2027 to move affected features to official APIs, formally request data, or discontinue unsupported features. That broader transition deadline does not override Patch 26.20’s replay restriction.

How did replay access work before the change?
A Riot support FAQ dated March 27, 2026 described the older system: replays were available during the current patch and became unavailable after the next patch, with a downloadable .rofl file that could be opened from match history. That guidance is historical context, not an exception to the Patch 26.20 rule. The newer patch notes govern who can access replays now.
