If League of Legends will not update, first check Riot’s regional service status, then fully restart the Riot Client and computer. Most local failures come from a stuck process, blocked or quarantined files, insufficient temporary storage, permissions, or an incomplete patch—not necessarily a bad internet connection. Use the least-destructive fixes below before reinstalling.
1. Check whether Riot is having an outage
Open Riot’s Service Status, choose your region and language, and select League of Legends. Read current incidents, maintenance notices, and recently closed issues. A confirmed patching or platform incident is a reason to wait rather than repeatedly repairing local files. If the page is clear but many players report the same failure, an unlisted incident is possible; that is evidence, not proof, that your computer is at fault.
Do not infer the live regional client version from Data Dragon. Riot notes that Data Dragon versions are not always equivalent to the client version used in every region (Riot Developer Relations).
2. Quick fixes that do not delete game files
Completely close Riot Client
- Close League of Legends and the Riot Client.
- Check the Windows system tray and exit Riot Client if it is still running.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End only clearly related Riot or League processes that remain.
- Restart Windows, then open Riot Client and retry.
Do not terminate unknown services or delete files while they are active. Locked files can create misleading patch errors. On macOS, quit the applications normally and restart the Mac before attempting removal or reinstallation.

Verify the basic prerequisites
- Keep more free disk space than the displayed download size; patching can need temporary space for extraction and verification.
- Use a stable connection. Close a VPN or proxy temporarily and avoid captive portals and restrictive workplace or public networks.
- Connect a laptop to power during a large patch.
- Set Windows or macOS date and time automatically; an incorrect clock can disrupt secure connections.
- Install pending operating-system updates and restart, even when the system does not strongly request it.
- Make sure your account can write to the Riot Games installation directory.
- Close overlays, recording tools, third-party launchers, and aggressive cleanup utilities that may lock files.
Never download random DLLs, unofficial launchers, cracked clients, or “patch fix” utilities.
3. Repair the League installation
In Riot Client, open the account/profile or settings area, select League of Legends, and look for Repair, Full Repair, or similarly named control. Riot changes labels and menu locations between client builds, so use the current wording shown in your client. Let the process finish without repeatedly cancelling it, then restart Riot Client and try the patch again.
Riot’s support hub also provides Fix My League, connection troubleshooting, system requirements, and the Riot Repair Tool (League of Legends Support). If repair freezes, leave it alone while disk activity continues; if it is demonstrably stuck, close the client cleanly, restart Windows or macOS, and retry.
4. Check permissions, antivirus, and firewall interference
Use administrator access as a test
Right-click Riot Client and choose Run as administrator once to test a write-permission problem, particularly when the installation is in a protected directory. This is not a guaranteed cure or a reason to run every Riot executable permanently with elevated privileges. Compatibility mode should generally be off unless Riot specifically instructs otherwise; applying it to only one executable can make launcher and game behavior inconsistent.

Check security software before disabling it
- Review your antivirus quarantine and detection history for recently blocked Riot or League files.
- Use your security product’s official exception mechanism for the Riot Client and League installation.
- Allow the relevant executables through the firewall.
- Retry briefly, then restore normal protection immediately.
Riot has documented post-patch startup problems where exceptions may be needed for files such as LeagueClient.exe, LeagueClientUx.exe, LeagueClientUxRenderer.exe, League of Legends.exe, RiotClientServices.exe, and, for Vanguard-related failures, vgc.exe and vgm.exe. Paths vary by installation and not every failure requires every exception. See Riot’s regional/translated support article on antivirus exceptions (Riot Games).
Do not leave antivirus or the firewall disabled. A short controlled test can show whether security software is involved, but precise exceptions are safer.
5. Fix the symptom you see

At 0 percent
Prioritize Riot maintenance, unstable connectivity, captive portals, VPN or proxy interference, firewall/antivirus blocking, missing write permission, and a client process still running in the background.
Near 99 percent
The progress display may be waiting on verification rather than downloading. Give it several minutes, especially on a hard drive, before force-closing it. Then check temporary disk space, antivirus activity, and processes that may hold a file open.

Error code 004
Error 004 means the patch did not complete; it does not identify one root cause. Reports around patch 26.14 describe different attempts—including restarts, repair, cleanup, operating-system updates, and reinstallations—without establishing a universal fix (community megathread; community error discussion).
Update, Play, or Prepare Download loops
Restart Windows or macOS, confirm whether the patch actually completed, run repair, and check for a pending operating-system restart. If the loop returns after every restart, stop repeating folder deletions and collect logs for Riot.
League updates but will not launch
Treat this as a launch or Vanguard branch, not automatically as a failed patch. Check whether Vanguard requires a restart, review antivirus exceptions, turn off compatibility mode, run repair, and inspect crash logs. Reinstall Vanguard only for a Vanguard-specific error or when Riot instructs you to.
6. Clear temporary data cautiously
Close Riot Client completely before touching local data. Prefer Riot’s documented instructions and back up settings you want to keep. Do not delete the entire Riot Games folder, or the Game or DATA directories, as an early fix; those contain installed assets and can force a large redownload.

Community posts sometimes report deleting configuration, logs, cache, or game-data folders for particular patch failures, but these are version-specific, anecdotal workarounds—not universal solutions. Such cleanup can remove settings, force downloads, or erase useful diagnostic evidence. Never interrupt an active repair unless the client is clearly frozen.

- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Riot Client and retry.
This is especially reasonable when League, Riot Client, and Vanguard all loop or fail. A community report linking a particular Windows update to a successful League patch is not proof of causation, so treat the step as a diagnostic possibility rather than an official Riot requirement (community report).
8. When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall only after repair, permissions, security checks, operating-system restarts, and connection tests fail. It is appropriate when the installation directory is damaged or inaccessible, the installation is incomplete, the client loops after every restart, or Riot Support recommends a clean reinstall. Reinstallation is time-consuming and bandwidth-intensive.
- Confirm your account credentials and region.
- Back up screenshots or custom settings you want to retain.
- Uninstall through the operating system’s application controls.
- Restart the computer.
- Download the current installer from Riot’s official page: League of Legends Download.
A Vanguard reinstall is a separate remedy for Vanguard-specific installation or startup failures; it is not the normal first response to a stalled game download.

9. Escalate with logs and a precise support report
Riot’s documented patcher guidance asks for compressed League Client logs when troubleshooting. On Windows, the default League log location is:

Compress the LeagueClient Logs folder and attach it to a Riot technical-support ticket. On Mac, right-click the League client application, choose Show Original, open Contents/LoL/Logs, and compress the LeagueClient Logs folder. See Riot’s Updated Client Patcher Issue guidance.
Include:
- Your region, operating system, and version.
- The exact displayed message or error code.
- Where progress stops and whether it loops.
- Whether the problem began after a particular patch.
- Whether other Riot games update successfully.
- What Riot’s status page showed.
- Your antivirus/firewall brand.
- Whether restart, repair, Windows Update, or reinstall changed the behavior.
The Bottom Line
Check Riot’s regional status first, then restart the client and computer, verify storage and system updates, run repair, and address security or permission blocks. Preserve game data while troubleshooting; reinstall only after these steps fail, and send Riot the appropriate logs when the problem persists.
