The LCS represents the Americas, the LEC represents EMEA, and the LCK represents Korea in Riot Games’ 2026 Tier 1 League of Legends structure. Their regional tournaments do not all use the same format: the 2026 examples include an LCS Swiss stage, a LEC round robin, and an LCK double round robin. Each region also sends teams to international events through its own qualification route.
What are the LCS, LEC, and LCK?
They are regional Tier 1 professional League of Legends competitions. In Riot Games’ 2026 structure, the LCS is part of the Americas region, the LEC is EMEA, and the LCK is Korea. They are distinct from First Stand, the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), and Worlds: those are international events that regional results help teams qualify for.

The handbook examples cover different parts of the season: LCS and LEC Split 1, and LCK Split 2. They show how formats vary by region and split—not a single format shared across the whole year.

| League | Region | Documented 2026 format and field | International qualification in that example |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCS | Americas | Split 1: 8 listed teams; three-week Swiss stage, then six-team double-elimination playoffs. | Split 1 winner qualifies for First Stand. |
| LEC | EMEA | Split 1: 12 event teams, including two invited ERL teams; single round robin, then eight-team double-elimination playoffs. | Split 1 winner qualifies for First Stand. |
| LCK | Korea | Split 2: 10 listed teams; double round robin, then a six-team single-elimination king-of-the-hill playoff. | Split 2 top two qualify for MSI. |
Team counts are the totals listed on the relevant 2026 handbook pages; the LEC total includes its two invited ERL teams. The formats and allocations are described in Riot’s LCS Split 1, LEC Split 1, and LCK Split 2 handbook pages.
What do Swiss, round robin, and elimination mean?
Swiss stage
In the LCS’s 2026 Split 1 example, teams play across three rounds, with teams sharing the same record drawn against one another. Rather than having every team play every other team, the schedule groups teams by results as the stage progresses.

Round robin
A single round robin has each team meet every other team once; a double round robin does so twice. The LEC uses the single version in the cited Split 1 format, while the LCK uses the double version in Split 2.
Double elimination
A double-elimination bracket gives a team a loss before it is eliminated, so teams can continue after their first playoff defeat. The LCS Split 1 playoff field has six teams; the LEC Split 1 field has eight.

Single elimination and king-of-the-hill
Single elimination means one loss ends a team’s playoff run. In the LCK’s 2026 Split 2 king-of-the-hill format, six teams enter that single-elimination playoff structure.
How do the leagues connect to international events?
Regional splits feed into Riot’s separate international calendar. The 2026 handbook places First Stand after Split 1, MSI after Split 2, and Worlds as the final international event. In the examples documented here, the LCS and LEC Split 1 winners qualify for First Stand, while the top two teams from LCK Split 2 qualify for MSI.

That is a comparison of the cited 2026 allocations, not a claim that the same qualification rules apply in every split or season. Riot’s 2026 season overview sets out the calendar and regional structure.

- Region: LCS is Americas, LEC is EMEA, and LCK is Korea in Riot’s 2026 structure.
- Tournament format: the documented examples use different stages and playoff brackets, and they refer to different splits.
- LEC event field: its 2026 Split 1 event includes two invited ERL teams; that does not make them permanent LEC members.
- International route: regional results feed into distinct global tournaments, with the specific qualification route depending on region and split.
These facts describe the 2026 handbook. They do not establish that one league is inherently stronger, more entertaining, or more aggressive, or that these formats will remain unchanged in future seasons.
