Here is what the reporting establishes, what it does not, and how the decision fits with Google’s Gemini rollout.
What LAUSD actually decided
On September 2, 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that senior administrators had imposed a moratorium on student use of generative AI on district-owned devices for the current school year. The move came to light at the first meeting of a school board committee examining AI in schools. Administrators described it as consistent with the spirit of the board’s unanimous June vote to limit student screen time. Board members said the board had not separately authorized the AI moratorium.

The distinction matters. The restriction covers generative AI on district-owned devices. It was not described as a ban on every AI feature, and it was not described as a rule for students’ personal devices. LAUSD chief academic officer Pia Sadaqatmal said the district did not yet have a policy on student activity on non-district devices.

LAUSD said it would keep using non-generative AI for educational purposes. The examples it gave were:

Ordinary Google search remained available to students. Google’s conversational AI Mode was turned off on student accounts and devices. Google was reported to be working on a technical update that would let administrators disable AI Mode completely, but the reporting does not say when that update will arrive.
Where Gemini fits in the timeline
Gemini is the reason many readers connect this story with Google, so the timing needs precision. The Associated Press reported on September 15, 2026 that Google had announced in August that it had turned on Gemini for many K–12 students using Google Classroom. That establishes broader K–12 availability. It does not establish that LAUSD had rolled Gemini out districtwide, and it does not give the date LAUSD students first gained access. The reporting reviewed for this article does not confirm a districtwide LAUSD Gemini rollout in the weeks before the moratorium, so the headline’s “weeks after” framing should be read as a sequence of two separate events rather than a verified local timeline.

How the rule treats teachers, personal devices and tracking
The moratorium applies to students, not adults. Teachers were not barred from using AI on district devices. However, the district does not have a districtwide system for teachers to use AI to grade student work or to identify academic dishonesty.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePersonal devices are the gap. LAUSD interim chief information officer Douglas Le said that student AI use on personal devices while signed into school accounts could be tracked. That is a monitoring capability, not a rule covering what students do on their own phones or home computers, and the district has not yet set a policy on non-district devices.

Why the decision surfaced now
Board member Kelly Gonez said she believed the previous approach was still in effect: AI was available to older students after digital-literacy and responsibility instruction. Board member Nick Melvoin said he was surprised by the step and that the board had not authorized it. Melvoin told the Los Angeles Times: “If the policy is we’re not going to allow students [to] use generative AI for the meantime, then we should publicize that.”
Parents who had pushed for a stricter approach welcomed the decision. Parent Bridie Lee, a leader of Schools Beyond Screens L.A., said: “LAUSD has made history again.” Common Sense Media’s chief program officer, Yvette Renteria, said the district was taking time to address risks and added: “Much work should be done during this year, including teaching AI literacy — which doesn’t require kids to use AI.”

Not everyone frames the question as a choice between AI and no AI. Syracuse University education-technology professor Jing Lei argued that banning technology for young children excludes them from meaningful learning, while for older students, “20 minutes of technology use … can be 20 minutes too many if these 20 minutes are not intentionally designed … to support meaningful learning outcomes.”

| Axis | LAUSD position as reported (September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Grade levels covered | Student moratorium; the reporting does not spell out a grade-by-grade schedule. Board member Kelly Gonez said she believed older students had been allowed AI use after instruction under the previous approach. |
| Generative AI or all AI | Generative AI only. Adaptive learning, speech tools, captioning and translation remain. |
| Device scope | District-owned devices. No districtwide policy yet for non-district devices; tracking possible on personal devices signed into school accounts. |
| Teacher use | Permitted on district devices. No districtwide system for AI grading or dishonesty detection. |
| Accessibility or instructional exceptions | Not stated as a separate exception process. Non-generative accessibility tools such as text-to-speech and captioning remain available. |
| Duration and authority | Moratorium for the current school year, imposed by senior administrators. Board members said the board had not separately authorized it. |
What remains unsettled
- Whether the moratorium will be converted into a durable, board-approved policy.
- What rules, if any, will govern students’ use of AI on personal devices.
- When the option for administrators to fully disable Google’s AI Mode will be available.
- Whether the district will set a standard for teacher use of AI in grading or misconduct cases.
Readers searching for whether the ban includes Google Gemini should note that the reporting ties the restriction to generative AI on district devices and describes AI Mode being switched off on student accounts. It does not describe a separate Gemini-specific ban, and it does not state whether every Gemini feature has been disabled.
