For a buying decision, the street price is usually the more useful starting point—but only after you confirm that the offer covers the same product, features, location, and purchase terms.
What launch price and street price mean
“Launch price” generally means the announced starting or introductory price around a product’s release. “Street price” generally means the price retailers are offering in the market at a particular time. These are useful market terms, not universally standardized legal definitions, so a seller’s label alone does not explain exactly what is included.

A manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is a recommended reference price, not a promise that retailers will charge it or that it reflects the price most buyers pay. Google defines a suggested retail price as the manufacturer’s suggested price for a product, while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions that a suggested or list price may not represent the prevailing market price. Google Manufacturer Center’s suggested-retail-price definition and the FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing explain those distinctions.
Why the gap matters to a buyer
The announced price may not be the amount you pay
A launch figure may describe a base configuration, while the product in a store listing includes more storage, upgraded features, or an accessory bundle. Taxes, shipping, and mandatory charges can also change the final amount. For vehicle pricing, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) distinguishes base price—which excludes options and add-ons—from MSRP, which includes recommended options and features; other costs and fees affect the total. Its vehicle-price explanation is specific to cars, but the comparison principle applies broadly: check what each figure includes.

A discount is only meaningful against a credible reference
A listing can claim a reduction from MSRP, a list price, or another reference figure. That does not establish that the item normally sells at the reference price. The FTC says a comparison with a suggested or list price may mislead if that price is not one at which a substantial number of sales occur. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) similarly advises that a recommended retail price used to claim savings should reflect a price generally used in the market. See the FTC pricing guides and the ASA advice on RRP price comparisons. These are jurisdiction-specific sources, not a single worldwide rule.
Offers may have conditions
Rebates and incentives can depend on who is buying, how they pay, or other eligibility terms. A low advertised figure may not be available to every shopper. Compare the offer you qualify for, and account for required charges rather than treating a conditional rebate as an automatic price reduction.

Prices vary by seller, channel, and date
Online and local-store prices can differ, and a price can change after launch as inventory and promotions change. For example, Target says online and local-store prices may differ. Its “Was” price is based on a 90-day median offered price and excludes sales, clearance, and limited-time promotions. That is Target’s own method, not a universal definition of a reference price. See Target’s price-match and price-label information.
How to compare two prices fairly
- Match the product. Confirm the exact model, configuration, storage or capacity, color where relevant, and included accessories. A base model and a bundled or upgraded model are not directly comparable.
- Match the buying conditions. Check the seller or channel, location, and date. An online offer, local-store price, and price from another region may differ.
- Calculate the payable total. Include required fees, taxes, delivery, and any other unavoidable charges. For US vehicle advertising, FTC staff guidance says dealer-required charges belong in the advertised price, except government-required charges paid directly to government; this vehicle-specific guidance should not be treated as a rule for every product or jurisdiction. See the FTC automobile pricing FAQs.
- Check the offer’s terms. Verify whether a rebate, financing offer, or other discount requires eligibility or a particular payment method, and compare the price you can actually obtain.
- Interrogate the reference price. If a retailer advertises savings against launch price, MSRP, or a “was” price, ask whether that reference reflects a real, relevant market price—not merely a number printed beside the current offer.
Which number should guide your decision?
Use the current, comparable offer as the practical starting point, then judge whether it is a good value against credible market references and the product’s features. Launch price can provide context for how a product was positioned when released, but it cannot by itself tell you today’s fair price. No general statistic establishes how much street prices typically differ from launch prices; the gap depends on the product, seller, market, and time.
