The Galaxy S26 Ultra is already a released phone, not an upcoming model. Samsung announced it on February 25, 2026, and general availability began on March 11. As of August 18, the newest significant development is the reported regional rollout of One UI 9 Beta 5, including the August security patch and fixes for several Settings and camera-launch bugs. The buying question now depends on software stability, discounts and whether Samsung’s built-in Privacy Display matters to you.
The latest Galaxy S26 Ultra news: One UI 9 Beta 5
Android Central and SamMobile reporting says Samsung has begun distributing One UI 9 Beta 5 to Galaxy S26 Ultra users in the United Kingdom, South Korea and India. The report says the build includes the August 2026 security patch, fixes for a white screen and app freezes in some Settings menus, and a fix for camera lag or a black screen when launching Camera from the lock screen. U.S. availability was described as expected, not confirmed, in that reporting. See Android Central’s report for the regional status and reported changes.

This is a beta, not a universal stable update. Availability depends on country, carrier and enrollment, and beta software can introduce new problems. Back up the phone before installing it, and avoid a beta build on a work-critical device unless you accept troubleshooting and rollback risks.
Release date and current availability
Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026; U.S. preorders opened the same day, and general sales started March 11. The S26 Ultra is currently sold in the United States through Samsung and carriers. Colors, storage options, processor configurations, network bands and promotions can differ by market; Samsung’s regional specifications hub is at Samsung Mobile Press.

That timeline makes older pages describing a “leaked” release date or “expected” specifications obsolete. The phone should be evaluated as Samsung’s current flagship, with One UI 9 development now more relevant than launch rumors.
U.S. price: MSRP versus what you may actually pay
Published U.S. MSRP figures are:
| Configuration | U.S. MSRP | Price source |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,299.99 | Samsung March 2026 MSRP list |
| 512GB | $1,499.99 | Samsung March 2026 MSRP list |
| 1TB | $1,799.99 | TechRadar’s review pricing table |
These are list prices, not a promise of today’s checkout total. By August, Samsung and retailers had begun offering discounts, but promotions change quickly. Compare the unlocked price with carrier installment plans, trade-in credit, storage upgrades and any required new-line activation. A high headline trade-in value is not the same as the amount you pay, and a temporary offer should be checked for its expiry and eligibility conditions. Samsung’s product page is here; an unlocked 256GB purchase page is here.

What changed from the Galaxy S25 Ultra?
Built-in Privacy Display
Samsung presents the integrated Privacy Display as a first for a phone. It narrows useful viewing angles so people beside you have a harder time reading the screen. That is most useful on aircraft, trains, in cafés and at work when handling banking, medical or business information. It does not replace a password, biometric lock or care about who is standing directly behind you. Reduced off-axis visibility can also make screen sharing awkward; check brightness, contrast and comfort at the settings you intend to use.
Thinner and lighter body
Samsung lists 7.9mm and 214g for the S26 Ultra, versus 8.2mm and 218g for the S25 Ultra. TechRadar describes a subtle redesign and a move from titanium to Armor Aluminum. The result is easier carrying, but S25 Ultra owners should regard the material change as a trade-off rather than an across-the-board upgrade.
Wider camera apertures
Samsung claims the 200MP main camera’s f/1.4 aperture improves brightness by 47%, while the 50MP telephoto improves brightness by 37% at 5x optical zoom. Those are Samsung comparisons, not independent laboratory results. A wider aperture can help in dim scenes, but it does not guarantee better color, motion capture, HDR or video in every situation.

New processor and thermal design
The customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and revised thermal management are intended to support heavier AI and demanding applications. The available material does not establish sustained gaming frame rates, long-session temperatures, battery endurance or a controlled S25 Ultra comparison, so treat performance claims as specifications and manufacturer positioning rather than test results.

The hardware gives the S26 Ultra a broad shooting range: a high-resolution main camera, 50MP ultrawide, 5x optical zoom and a second long-range telephoto. Samsung also promotes its ProVisual Engine and night-video processing. TechRadar provides hands-on samples and observations, but the available evidence is not a controlled laboratory comparison.
For a camera buying decision, look for independent results covering moving subjects, skin tones, HDR, 5x and 10x detail, ultrawide edge sharpness, stabilization, shutter lag, RAW/Pro modes and heat during extended 4K or 8K recording. The same caution applies to battery life. Samsung advertises up to 31 hours of video playback under its test conditions and warns that networks, apps, calls, settings, charging history and other factors change real-world endurance. It is not a general-use guarantee.

Software, AI and regional limitations
The phone launched with Android 16 and One UI 8.5. Its AI features span Samsung Galaxy AI and Bixby, Google Gemini and Perplexity, creating a powerful but potentially fragmented ecosystem. Feature access can depend on country, language, Samsung or Google account, internet connection, software version, privacy settings and third-party policies. Do not assume every announced AI function is available worldwide or remains permanently free.
Keep stable software and beta software separate when checking an update. A phone can be current on its public release while One UI 9 remains an optional test build in selected markets.
Who should buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra?
Buy now if you need Samsung’s complete flagship package
- You want the largest Galaxy display, integrated S Pen and extensive camera controls.
- The Privacy Display solves a real privacy problem in your commute, travel or workplace.
- You are upgrading from a much older Ultra model and can secure a meaningful trade-in or retailer discount.
- You want Samsung’s long-zoom hardware and broad productivity features rather than a smaller phone.
Wait if you already own an S25 Ultra
- The S25 Ultra already provides a high-end display, S Pen and multi-camera system.
- You do not need the Privacy Display or the newer aperture claims.
- You prefer to see a stable One UI 9 release before changing phones.
- You are mainly seeking faster charging or a larger battery; the S26 Ultra remains a 5,000mAh phone.
Choose the S25 Ultra for value
If the older model is substantially cheaper, it may deliver the better balance of flagship features and price. Its titanium construction may also appeal to buyers who prefer that material. Compare actual discounted totals rather than launch MSRPs.
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Alternatives to consider
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL
Tom’s Guide positions the Pixel 11 Pro XL as a direct premium Android rival. It is the more natural comparison for buyers who prioritize Google’s software, camera processing and AI approach. The S26 Ultra counters with a larger display, S Pen, Privacy Display and more extensive camera hardware on paper. See the comparison, while checking which Pixel specifications and prices are confirmed for your market.
Wait for a later Galaxy generation
Waiting is reasonable for an S25 Ultra owner who does not need the Privacy Display, camera-aperture changes or lighter body immediately. That is a timing choice, not a prediction about unannounced specifications.
Bottom line for August 18, 2026
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a current flagship released on March 11, 2026. One UI 9 Beta 5—not new hardware—is the latest reported news, and its regional beta status should not be confused with a stable update. The defining hardware change is the built-in Privacy Display, while the thinner body and wider camera apertures are more incremental. Buy when a real discount makes the price acceptable and those features matter; otherwise, compare a discounted S25 Ultra or wait.
