LatencyMon Can Help Diagnose Audio Glitches on Windows—but Not Every Slow PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free Windows utility LatencyMon can help investigate audio dropouts, clicks, and pops by measuring timing delays and highlighting drivers or processes associated with them. It does not tell you exactly what is slowing down a PC in general: it is designed to assess real-time audio performance, not diagnose broad CPU, memory, disk, or startup slowdowns.

What LatencyMon measures—and what it doesn’t

Resplendence Software describes LatencyMon as a tool that checks whether a Windows system is suitable for real-time audio processing. It measures kernel timer latency, reports the execution times of Deferred Procedure Calls (DPCs) and Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs), and monitors hard page faults. Its reports can identify kernel modules and processes associated with the sampled activity, offering leads for investigating audio problems.

That scope matters. A report that points to a driver is not a diagnosis of every kind of PC slowness, nor does it prove that the driver is the sole cause of an audio glitch. LatencyMon is not a general-purpose monitor for CPU load, disk activity, memory use, or all causes of a sluggish computer.

Why timing delays can cause audio glitches

Windows handles ordinary work on a best-effort basis; it does not guarantee that every task will run at a precise moment. An audio application must deliver data to the audio system and hardware through buffers on time. If a buffer deadline is missed, the listener may hear a dropout, click, or pop.

When a hardware interrupt occurs, Windows may pause the work running on a processor to run an ISR and then, in some cases, a DPC. Until those routines finish, an audio application may have to wait. If timing is disrupted long enough, audio can glitch. LatencyMon measures aspects of this activity so you can investigate whether timing problems coincide with the symptom.

How to test for an audio problem

Focusrite recommends DPC latency testing when audible glitches or dropouts persist after earlier audio troubleshooting. Its guidance is to run LatencyMon while playing audio through the interface for at least 15 minutes, and to make sure the glitch happens during the test. A run without the symptom may not capture the conditions you are trying to investigate.

  1. Start LatencyMon and begin the test.
  2. Play audio through the affected interface in the conditions where the problem usually occurs.
  3. Continue for at least 15 minutes, as Focusrite recommends, and note whether a click, pop, or dropout occurs while the test is running.
  4. Review the report for timing and page-fault data, including any kernel modules or processes it associates with the sampled activity.

How to act on a driver named in the report

Treat a driver near the top of a report as a troubleshooting lead, not proof that it should be removed. First check whether the reported activity corresponds to the time and circumstances of the audible glitch. Then favor changes you can reverse and test one at a time, so you can tell whether a change actually helped.

Focusrite’s broader troubleshooting sequence includes checking for Windows and device-driver updates, and disconnecting peripherals that can safely be disconnected. If removing a device resolves the glitch, reconnect devices one at a time to help narrow down the cause. Its guidance also includes targeted checks involving network, graphics, power-management, and storage drivers. Avoid changing BIOS, power, or storage-controller settings—or uninstalling a driver—solely because one test run ranked it highly. If you are unsure about changing PC components or settings, contact the computer manufacturer or a technician.

What hard page faults can mean for audio

A hard page fault occurs when a program requests a memory page that is not currently resident in physical RAM, so Windows may need to read it from storage. Resplendence notes that a hard page fault during audio playback can have audible consequences; such faults can also be common in memory-intensive audio software, including samplers. This is a different signal from DPC or ISR timing, so a page-fault finding should not be treated as proof of a driver problem.

Resplendence lists increasing a program’s working set or adding RAM among possible responses when page faults are relevant. Whether more RAM is appropriate depends on the PC and workload; a memory upgrade is not a general fix for ordinary slowness or DPC latency. Resplendence also mentions disabling the page file, but warns that doing so can leave the system out of memory and prevent crash dumps from being created. That risk makes it a consequential change, not a routine first step.

When LatencyMon is the wrong tool

If the problem is that Windows starts slowly, applications take a long time to open, or the PC feels sluggish without audio glitches, LatencyMon’s measurements do not establish the cause. Its results are useful when investigating real-time audio timing and related dropouts; they should not be read as a complete explanation of general PC performance.
