The approach matters to the pictures because these are not simply studies of décor. The clubs are social spaces used by people, and photographing them involves a relationship with those people and the place. The feature does not identify a camera or lens as central to the project.
What does Howorth mean by photographic truth?
Howorth rejects the idea that documentary photographs provide an unmediated version of events. As quoted by Tangen, he says: “There is no truth,” then qualifies the thought: “There is what happened, and there is how the photographer chose to photograph it. The two may overlap, but they are never quite the same thing.”

That distinction gives the project a useful tension. A photograph can show a real interior and still reflect choices about framing, timing and what to include. Howorth’s account does not make the images less documentary; it makes the photographer’s part in representing a place visible.
Why do working men’s clubs matter beyond their interiors?
The feature interprets the clubs through community, class and belonging, while resisting the temptation to present working-class Britain as a museum of picturesque rooms. Howorth says of the clubs, “I adore them,” and describes the feeling of entering one this way: “You go in, and everyone is immediately equal.” These are his reflections as reported by Tangen, not a claim that every club offered every person the same experience.

The history is more complicated than a nostalgic image of convivial interiors. Historian Richard Hall’s peer-reviewed article describes clubs’ post-war transformation from smaller male social spaces toward larger, family-oriented entertainment venues, alongside social, welfare and educational roles. It also notes persistent patriarchal and discriminatory cultures. Tangen’s feature reports that some women told Howorth they felt safe in clubs; that account sits alongside, rather than erases, the institutions’ historically male-centred character.
The movement also had organized origins: Cambridge University Press’s description of Working Men’s Social Clubs and Educational Institutes says Henry Solly founded the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union and became its first paid secretary in 1863. That history helps explain why clubs can be understood as more than pubs: they were also institutions tied to social and educational life.

How many working men’s clubs are left in Britain?
No current count is established by the sources cited here. Hall’s historical research reports that by 1960 Britain had more than 3,500 clubs and more than two million members. Those figures describe that historical moment; they are not a count of clubs or members today. The phrase “last remaining” conveys a sense of decline in the feature’s framing, not a verified contemporary census.
Is Arcadia the book of these photographs?
Tangen’s feature mentions Howorth’s book Arcadia and Setanta Books, but does not identify Arcadia as the book containing the working-men’s-club photographs. The connection should not be assumed. The feature states a £60 price for Arcadia, but that time-sensitive price has not been independently checked.

What can photographers take from the project?
Howorth’s method offers a lesson in documentary practice rather than a gear prescription. His account emphasizes that a photographer’s choices shape a picture’s meaning, while access and attention connect the image to the people and place being photographed. He calls the point where process, subject and narrative become inseparable “the holy grail.”
He also describes the direction he hopes the project can take: “I want this to be a story of, in many ways, redemption.” Tangen makes clear that this is not an argument that everything old deserves to be saved; it is an invitation to reconsider what a social institution can still offer. Howorth’s photographs thus ask viewers to look past the serenity of a room and consider the community that gives it purpose.
