Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There is no evidence here to name a universal lowest-cost-per-page laser printer. The best-supported candidate is the monochrome Brother HL-L2460DW XL because its U.S. listing showed a $229.99 price on October 13, 2026 and approximately 4,200 pages of toner in the box. That large starter supply can reduce how often you buy toner, but it does not prove the lowest lifetime cost: a defensible cost-per-page ranking also needs dated replacement-toner, drum and other consumable prices for every competing model.
This guide shows how to calculate the number correctly, where the HL-L2460DW XL fits, why the standard HL-L2460DW is a different value proposition, and what evidence is still missing before calling any printer the cheapest to operate.

What “lowest cost per page” really means
Cost per page (CPP) is the amount you spend to produce a page over the life of a printer. The useful comparison is not simply the price on the printer box or the number of pages in its starter cartridge. A complete calculation separates the machine purchase, replacement toner, drums and any other required consumables.

toner CPP = replacement-cartridge price ÷ rated cartridge yield
Then add the drum and other consumables:
total supply CPP = toner CPP + (drum price ÷ rated drum yield) + other consumable costs per page
If you want an ownership figure rather than a supplies-only figure, add the printer price and divide the total by the number of pages you expect to print. Keep the included toner separate from replacement supplies so a heavily bundled model is not mistaken for one with permanently cheaper toner.

Why a large starter cartridge is not proof of low lifetime cost
A printer can include thousands of pages of toner and still have expensive replacement cartridges. Conversely, a model with a small starter cartridge might have inexpensive high-yield replacements. The first-year cost and the long-run cost can therefore point to different choices.
Page yields are standardized estimates, not guarantees. Brother’s published yields for the relevant cartridges use ISO/IEC 19752 testing for single-sided A4 or Letter pages. Actual results change with how much of each page is covered in black, the media used, job size, print quality and other settings.
The best-supported candidate: Brother HL-L2460DW XL
Brother’s U.S. product listing identifies the HL-L2460DW XL as a monochrome printer priced at $229.99 when accessed on October 13, 2026. The bundle includes one TN830 cartridge and one TN830XL cartridge, with approximately 4,200 pages of toner combined. That is the clearest advantage established by the available specifications: you can print substantially more pages before the first replacement purchase than with the standard package.
| Specification | HL-L2460DW XL detail | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Listed U.S. printer price | $229.99 | Brother USA listing accessed October 13, 2026; prices can change. |
| Toner supplied in the box | Approximately 4,200 pages combined | TN830 plus TN830XL, according to Brother. |
| Standard TN830 yield | Approximately 1,200 pages | Brother Support; ISO/IEC 19752, single-sided A4/Letter. |
| High-yield TN830XL yield | Approximately 3,000 pages | Brother Support; ISO/IEC 19752, single-sided A4/Letter. |
| U.S.-only TN830V yield | Approximately 3,300 pages | Brother Support; availability is limited to the United States. |
| Drum | DR830, approximately 15,000 pages | Brother’s stated one-page-per-job test condition can differ from real-world use. |
| Print speed | Up to 36 pages per minute | Manufacturer-rated maximum. |
| Paper capacity | 250-sheet tray | Manufacturer specification. |
| Connections | Dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB 2.0 | Manufacturer specification. |
| Recommended monthly volume | Up to 2,500 pages | Use this workload guidance for planning; it is not the same as the maximum duty cycle. |
| Maximum monthly duty cycle | Up to 35,000 pages | A separate design limit, not a recommended recurring workload. |
The XL designation matters mainly because of the included supply. It is reasonable to describe this model as a candidate for low replenishment frequency and a large initial toner allowance. It is not reasonable to label it the mathematically cheapest printer per page without current replacement prices and drum costs from the same market and date as competing models.

What the 4,200-page bundle means in practice
The approximately 4,200-page figure is the combined rated yield of the supplied TN830 and TN830XL cartridges. It is not a single cartridge yield, and it should not be compared with one rival’s high-yield cartridge unless the rival’s starter supply is counted in the same way.
Brother’s separate support documentation lists the standard TN830 at approximately 1,200 pages and the TN830XL at approximately 3,000 pages. The U.S.-only TN830V is listed at approximately 3,300 pages. Those numbers explain why cartridge choice affects replenishment frequency: one TN830XL lasts about two and a half times as long as a TN830 under the stated test method.
Drum cost must be amortized
The DR830 drum is rated for approximately 15,000 pages under Brother’s one-page-per-job test condition. A drum is not replaced every time toner runs out, so its price should be spread across its rated yield in a CPP calculation. The one-page-per-job qualification matters because frequent short jobs can produce different wear from long, continuous runs. No current DR830 selling price was published, so a final dollar-per-page figure cannot be calculated from the supplied evidence alone.
Standard HL-L2460DW versus the XL package
The standard HL-L2460DW is useful as a first-year comparison because Brother’s brochure and product disclosure describe a 700-page starter toner cartridge. The XL package instead includes the TN830 and TN830XL cartridges totaling approximately 4,200 pages.

If your priority is avoiding an early toner purchase, the XL bundle is the stronger choice on the published specifications. If your priority is the lowest long-run CPP, calculate the price of every replacement TN830 or TN830XL cartridge, the DR830 drum, and your expected page volume before deciding.
Why a market-wide winner cannot be named yet
A lowest-CPP claim requires a like-for-like data set. For each printer, record the printer price, the exact replacement cartridge price, rated yield, drum or imaging-unit price and yield, included toner, print color, and expected monthly pages. Use one region, one date, one paper-size standard and one assumption about genuine versus compatible supplies.
The available evidence does not provide all of those values for competing models. Canon’s U.S. search-result material identifies 070 and 070 H toner with a 1,500-page yield, but the official product page returned a 403 error. A current Canon printer price, replacement-toner price and drum economics were not validated, so the Canon imageCLASS LBP246dw cannot be ranked against the Brother by CPP on this evidence.

How to calculate your own cost per page
1. Define the workload
- Count only the pages you expect to print, not the manufacturer’s maximum duty-cycle figure.
- Separate monochrome pages from color pages. Color laser printers use multiple cartridge sets and cannot be compared directly with a monochrome supply budget.
- Estimate whether your jobs are mostly long runs or many one-page jobs, because drum wear can vary with job pattern.
2. Price replacement supplies in one market
Use current prices from the same country and date for every model. Decide whether the comparison uses genuine manufacturer supplies or compatible cartridges, then apply that rule consistently. Do not combine a U.S. printer price with a toner price from another region.
3. Divide each price by its rated yield
For example, record the price of a TN830XL and divide it by its approximately 3,000-page ISO/IEC 19752 yield. Do the same for the standard TN830, the drum and any other required item. Keep the approximately 15,000-page DR830 rating tied to its one-page-per-job qualification.
4. Separate first-year and steady-state results
First-year cost should include the printer and the toner supplied in the box, then add only the replacement supplies needed to reach your first-year page count. Steady-state CPP should use replacement supplies after the included toner is exhausted. Reporting both prevents a generous starter bundle from hiding an expensive long-run supply system.
5. Test sensitivity to page coverage
ISO yields assume a standardized page. Text-heavy documents may last longer than pages with large black areas, graphics or dense forms. If your work is unusually ink-heavy, treat the published CPP as a baseline rather than a promise and leave room in the budget for earlier replacement.
Workload, speed and connectivity considerations
The HL-L2460DW XL is rated for up to 36 pages per minute, has automatic duplex printing and a 250-sheet paper tray. Dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB 2.0 provide options for wireless users, wired office networks and direct computer connections. Those features affect convenience and paper use, but they do not lower toner CPP by themselves.
Brother lists a recommended monthly print volume of up to 2,500 pages and a separate maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 35,000 pages. The maximum is a design figure, not a target for routine printing. If your expected workload is near or above 2,500 pages every month, treat the recommended-volume qualification as a buying constraint and investigate a model designed for that sustained demand rather than relying on the larger number.

The Brother U.S. listing describes Refresh EZ Print, a subscription for eligible users. The manufacturer’s disclosure compares the U.S. Mono Laser Power Plan’s monthly subscription cost with average CPP for eligible standard-capacity cartridges, says savings vary by plan, and warns that prices and terms can change.

Do not put a subscription price or savings percentage into a CPP table without checking the live terms. The offer is described for new subscribers in the contiguous United States and includes additional qualification details. A subscription calculation should state the plan’s recurring fee, page allowance, overage rules, shipment terms and cancellation conditions, then compare that total with the supplies-only alternative.
Common mistakes that produce a false “cheapest” result
- Using the starter cartridge as the lifetime supply. The HL-L2460DW XL’s approximately 4,200 included pages are a one-time bundle, not a recurring yield.
- Ignoring the drum. A toner-only calculation omits a required consumable. Amortize the DR830 or a rival imaging unit over its rated pages.
- Mixing regions or dates. Currency, taxes, promotions and availability can change the result. The $229.99 Brother figure is a U.S. listing accessed October 13, 2026.
- Comparing color with monochrome. Color systems require separate cyan, magenta, yellow and black supplies and a different workload model.
- Treating maximum duty cycle as recommended volume. The Brother figures of up to 35,000 maximum pages and up to 2,500 recommended pages answer different questions.
- Assuming ISO yield equals every job. Coverage, media, settings and one-page jobs can move actual consumption away from the standardized estimate.
- Mixing genuine and compatible supplies. A low cartridge price is not a fair advantage if another model is evaluated only with genuine supplies.
Which buyer should choose the HL-L2460DW XL?
Choose it when low replenishment frequency is the priority
The XL package is a sensible shortlist choice for a home office or small workgroup that wants automatic duplexing, network connectivity and approximately 4,200 pages of toner included. The large initial supply can postpone the first toner order and reduce interruptions.

Buy it as the lowest-cost option only after checking current TN830 or TN830XL prices and the DR830 price in your market. The available evidence supports “best-supported candidate” and “large included toner supply,” not a universal cheapest-per-page verdict.
Look beyond this class when your workload is very high
If you routinely approach or exceed 2,500 pages per month, compare printers designed for that sustained workload. Do not use the 35,000-page maximum duty-cycle number as permission to operate continuously at that level.
A purchase checklist
- Confirm that you need monochrome rather than color.
- Write down your expected monthly pages and distinguish normal volume from occasional peaks.
- Check the current local printer price on the date you buy.
- Record the price and ISO/IEC 19752 yield of every available replacement cartridge.
- Record drum or imaging-unit price and rated yield, including any one-page-per-job qualification.
- Count the pages of starter toner separately from replacement pages.
- Apply the same genuine-versus-compatible supply rule to every model.
- Calculate first-year cost and steady-state supply CPP separately.
- Verify paper capacity, duplexing, network connections and speed against your workflow.
- Recheck subscription terms if you are considering a managed toner plan; prices and eligibility can change.
Bottom line for this evidence set
The Brother HL-L2460DW XL is the strongest documented candidate for minimizing toner replenishment: a $229.99 U.S. listing accessed October 13, 2026, approximately 4,200 included toner pages, automatic duplexing, a 250-sheet tray and up to 36 pages per minute. Its TN830XL replacement is rated for approximately 3,000 pages, while the DR830 drum is rated for approximately 15,000 pages under Brother’s stated test condition.
Those specifications do not establish the lowest lifetime cost per page. Make that claim only after comparing dated local replacement-toner and drum prices, with the same assumptions for every printer and a workload that fits the recommended monthly volume.
