Short answer: Larix Broadcaster can send a phone’s camera feed to YouTube Live, and Softvelum says Android streaming continues when the app is in the background or the screen is locked—until you explicitly close the app. On iOS, the vendor says background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, so it is not a supported choice for unattended camera video. Neither the reviewed documentation nor the app listing establishes guaranteed 24/7 operation or a fixed runtime.
Verdict: Android can keep streaming in the background, but not after you close Larix
Softvelum’s Larix FAQ says Android background streaming is available by default and continues “until you close it explicitly.” This is the key distinction: backgrounding the app or locking the screen is not the same as closing it. The vendor’s statement describes app behavior, not a guarantee that every phone, network, or YouTube stream will remain live indefinitely. (Softvelum’s Larix FAQ)

For iOS, Softvelum says the camera and encoder are unavailable in background mode and only audio remains available. That makes iOS unsuitable for the specific use case of leaving a camera-based YouTube stream running while Larix is backgrounded or the device is locked. Check the behavior on your own device and app version before relying on a long session.

What Larix Broadcaster does—and what this review can establish
Larix Broadcaster is a mobile encoder that can send live video and audio to YouTube Live. The Android Google Play listing describes support for protocols including RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC/WHIP, NDI HX2, RTSP, and RIST, and video formats including H.264 and H.265/HEVC. It also lists overlays and MP4 recording. These are Android listing claims; they should not be taken as proof of identical iOS features. (Google Play listing, updated August 11, 2026)

The listing describes auto-start and adaptive bitrate as Premium features. Availability and entitlements can change, so check the current listing and in-app plan details if you need them. The reviewed sources do not establish a guaranteed stream duration, a dependable 24/7 runtime, or a universal maximum session length. Actual continuity depends on the phone, its power and thermal conditions, network quality, operating-system behavior, Larix execution, and YouTube ingest.
Android vs. iOS for background YouTube video
| Use case | What the vendor documents | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Android app in background or screen locked | Background streaming is available by default and works until the app is explicitly closed. (Softvelum FAQ) | Potentially suitable for a hands-off camera stream, but not evidence of guaranteed 24/7 uptime. |
| Android app explicitly closed | Softvelum names explicit closure as the stopping condition. (Softvelum FAQ) | Do not close Larix if you expect the phone to keep sending video. |
| iOS app in background | The camera and encoder are inaccessible; only audio remains available. (Softvelum FAQ) | Do not rely on iOS background mode for unattended camera video. |
A locked screen and a backgrounded app can still be affected by device-specific power management or other operating-system behavior. The reviewed sources do not quantify those effects across phone models, so treat a long unattended session as something to test, not assume.

Set up Larix as a YouTube encoder
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key shown for the stream in Live Control Room. Use the values YouTube gives you for your own stream; do not copy a sample key or assume one server URL applies in every setup. Softvelum’s documentation points to YouTube setup resources and recommends configuring Larix for video plus audio with an appropriate bitrate. (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; Larix documentation reference)

- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and open the encoder setup details. Copy the Live server URL and stream key YouTube displays for that stream.
- Configure Larix. Add a connection in Larix using the YouTube server URL and stream key. Set the source to video plus audio if you intend to send both. Choose an appropriate bitrate for your available upload bandwidth and the quality you plan to stream; the reviewed Larix documentation does not specify one universal bitrate for every phone, resolution, or network.
- Check the image and sound. Position the phone, confirm the camera framing and audio, and verify the stream preview in YouTube before treating the setup as ready for viewers. YouTube lists an external microphone among typical streaming hardware; use one if the built-in microphone is not suitable.
- Test the background behavior. On Android, start the stream, background Larix or lock the screen, and confirm from another device that YouTube still receives video and audio. Do not explicitly close Larix during the test. On iOS, do not expect camera video to continue in the background.
For a fixed camera view, a phone tripod mount is a practical way to keep framing steady; it is not a Larix requirement. For longer sessions, begin with a fully charged device and use dedicated Wi-Fi if available, as Restream recommends for mobile streaming. These are useful operating conditions, not uptime guarantees. Network behavior: RTMP, RTSP, and SRT are not interchangeable guarantees
Softvelum says deteriorating network conditions can cause frame loss with RTMP and RTSP. It says SRT attempts to compensate within the configured latency period. That recovery window is bounded by the latency setting and does not replace a stable connection. YouTube’s encoder instructions tell users to use the Live server URL and key supplied for their stream; do not assume that SRT is available in every YouTube ingest configuration. Check the options shown for your account and chosen workflow before selecting a protocol. (Softvelum FAQ; YouTube encoder setup)
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops when you leave Larix: On Android, background streaming is documented, but explicit app closure is not. Reopen Larix, reconnect if needed, and avoid closing it while streaming.
- Video disappears after locking or backgrounding on iPhone: Softvelum says iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder. Use an Android workflow for background camera video, or keep the iOS app in the foreground for camera streaming.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that the server URL and stream key in Larix match the values currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Avoid reusing a key or URL from a different stream setup.
- Video drops frames as the connection worsens: Softvelum notes RTMP/RTSP may lose frames under deteriorating network conditions. Improve the connection where possible; if SRT is available in the workflow, remember its recovery is limited by its configured latency period.
- A long session fails despite the app remaining open: The reviewed sources provide no universal runtime guarantee. Check power, temperature, network stability, and whether the operating system is still allowing Larix to run; test the exact phone and setup before relying on it unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel rather than a phone-camera broadcast, Larix is the wrong tool for the job: it streams a live camera feed from the phone, while StreamNeo loops videos you upload. With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free trial.
