AI can speed up a Laravel upgrade by finding relevant documentation, inspecting an application and proposing code changes. It cannot decide whether those changes preserve your app’s intended behavior. For a Laravel 12-to-13 migration, use AI to support a developer-led review: check every proposed change against the official upgrade guide, inspect the diff and validate the result with tests and dependency checks.
What Laravel’s AI-assisted upgrade path does—and doesn’t do
Laravel’s Laravel 13 upgrade guide documents moving from 12.x to 13.0 and describes a guided path using Laravel Boost, Laravel’s first-party MCP server. Its /upgrade-laravel-v13 command requires Boost ^2.0. The guide still lists dependency updates and individual framework changes; the command is assistance through that material, not a certification that an upgraded project is correct.

Laravel says Boost can inspect an application, provide version-aware Laravel guidelines and search documentation filtered to installed package versions. Version-matched guidance can help an assistant avoid stale or deprecated syntax, but it cannot establish that every project-specific behavior change has been found. See Laravel’s AI-assisted development documentation.

Laravel’s AI-Generated Contributions guidance states the requirement.

Why Laravel 13 changes need application-specific review
The upgrade guide includes changes whose impact depends on how an application is built and configured. An AI may identify a framework-level change, but only someone familiar with the project can determine whether its code, packages or operational assumptions make that change relevant.
Dependencies and package compatibility
The 13.x guide lists updates including Laravel Framework ^13.0, Boost ^2.0, Tinker ^3.0, PHPUnit ^12.0 and Pest ^4.0, where applicable. Treat these as guide-specific version requirements, not a universal list to paste into every project. Check the application’s actual dependencies and each relevant package’s compatibility and upgrade instructions. Laravel’s upgrade guide also points to changes beyond the framework itself.
Request-forgery protection and middleware references
Laravel renamed VerifyCsrfToken to PreventRequestForgery and added request-origin verification using the Sec-Fetch-Site header. Deprecated aliases remain, but that does not remove the need to inspect direct class references, test exclusions and custom middleware configuration. Review how the application handles requests rather than treating a renamed class as a purely mechanical edit.

Cache prefixes and session-cookie names
Laravel 13 uses hyphenated suffixes for cache prefixes and session-cookie names. The guide says this primarily affects applications relying on framework fallback values, rather than those with explicit app-level configuration. Check the project’s configuration and integrations before deciding whether its names or behavior need adjustment.

Scheduling during application bootstrap
Registration through ApplicationBuilder::withScheduling() is deferred until Schedule resolves. The guide flags this for applications that rely on registration happening immediately during bootstrap. Inspect bootstrap assumptions and the behavior of scheduled tasks to determine whether timing matters in your application.
These examples are not a substitute for reviewing the full guide for the exact source and destination versions. Check relevant first-party and third-party package instructions, and review Laravel’s release notes for supported database versions as well.

A reviewable workflow for an AI-assisted Laravel upgrade
- Establish the starting point. Record the application’s Laravel version, PHP runtime, dependency graph, custom framework integrations and deployment environment. Compare the PHP version with Laravel’s current support information before planning the upgrade.
- Constrain the assistant to the right sources. Ask it to use the official guide for the exact version transition. Have it distinguish definite incompatibilities from changes that apply only under particular configuration or usage conditions.
- Demand a reason for each edit. For every proposed change, require an explanation tied to the application’s code or configuration and a relevant version-specific source. Inspect the diff instead of accepting a broad generated patch.
- Validate the target project. Run dependency resolution, static checks and relevant automated tests in the target environment. Add regression tests for behavior that the upgrade could change. These checks make the review concrete; a generated explanation alone does not establish that the application works.
- Resolve failures before approving. Investigate test failures and behavior that remains unclear with a developer who understands the application. Approve and deploy only changes that are understood and validated—not because an assistant sounds confident.
Check Laravel 13’s support window against your upgrade plan
Laravel’s release table lists Laravel 13 as released on March 17, 2026, with PHP 8.3–8.5 supported. It lists bug fixes through Q3 2027 and security fixes through March 17, 2028. Laravel states a general policy of 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes per release. See the Laravel release page for the current support and compatibility information; verify it when planning, since release details can change or be clarified. These framework dates do not predict how much work a particular application will need.
