Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Mobile Review: Fun to Explore, Frustrating to Master

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is an appealing mobile adventure built around exploration, puzzles, combat and loot—but touchscreen controls can make simple traversal harder than it should be. In Cristina Mesesan’s Pocket Gamer review, the game’s charm and gear options are weighed against unclear button timing and a lack of a straightforward tutorial.

What the mobile game is like

Pocket Gamer lists Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris for iOS and Android, classifying it as an action and shooter game. The review concerns this mobile adaptation, not the separate 2014 PC and console release. Pocket Gamer’s game page provides the listing and synopsis.

The reviewed play loop moves Lara through rooms where she fights enemies, solves puzzles and collects loot. Mesesan found that mix inviting, with an adventurous tone and readable presentation that brought back Tomb Raider memories. The room-to-room variety gives the game more to offer than combat alone.

Why exploration works better than traversal

The central frustration is not that the game has too many controls, but that it can be difficult to work out exactly when and how to use them. Mesesan says the touchscreen buttons require a specific sequence and timing. Her example is a grappling-hook move over spikes: she needed to jump first, then press and hold the hook control. She recalls spending roughly 15 to 20 minutes learning that sequence; this is her personal account of one maneuver, not a general completion-time measure.

#1 Best Overall
Lara Croft Temple of Osiris (PS4)
  • All-New Adventure - Lara must overcome deadly traps and forsaken gods to uncover the missing pieces of Osiris and change her fate
  • Classic Arcade Action - First ever 4 player co-op multiplayer experience featuring Lara Croft. Have your friends play as Carter, Isis, and Horus while you play as Lara in the fully cooperative story mode - both offline and online supported
  • Competitive Co-op - Compete against your friends with seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op to earn bigger rewards, treasures, and powerful artifacts to boost your character. Will you work together or will you sacrifice your friends for a higher score

That kind of input ambiguity can interrupt the otherwise enjoyable rhythm of exploring rooms and solving their challenges. Mesesan describes the controls as simplified and responsive, but says their placement and timing made play frustrating. Her review also notes quirks such as a missing enemy HP bar. She played on an iPhone 17 Pro and did not have keyboard or mouse access during her play, so these observations are not a controlled comparison across phones or input methods.

Gear adds room to shape a build

Loot is more than a collection incentive: gear unlocks can change how a player’s build works. Mesesan gives amulets that add shots and amulets that create scatter shot as examples. That variation gives players a reason to pay attention to equipment alongside the immediate puzzle and combat challenges.

  • Gold Edition only - game NOT included
  • The Gold Edition of Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris features multiple exclusive items including a Lara figurine, an art book featuring never-before-seen art, a folding map of the over world

Is multiplayer or an external controller worth considering?

The review presents multiplayer as a way to play with friends, but Mesesan did not try it, so her account cannot establish how well it works in practice. She also suggests that an iPad player could connect a keyboard and mouse, which might make the experience smoother. The review does not identify compatible devices or report testing that setup; treat it as a possibility, not a verified fix.

Can you try it before buying?

Mesesan says a free demo stage is available before purchasing the full version. That gives prospective players a chance to see whether the controls suit them before committing. The reviewed material does not state a current price, so check the relevant app store listing for present availability and cost.

Verdict

Mesesan calls the mobile adaptation charming and finds it enjoyable once its control quirks are overcome. Its strongest case is the combination of exploration, puzzles, combat and build options; its biggest obstacle is that the touchscreen does not always make basic actions feel obvious. If a free demo is available in your store, use it to judge the input for yourself before buying. Read Cristina Mesesan’s full Pocket Gamer review for her account of the game.
