A blank laptop screen does not necessarily mean the laptop is off. First check whether it shows signs of power; then work through basic display checks before treating the problem as a failed screen. If the built-in display stays blank, a compatible external monitor can help narrow down whether the internal display path may be involved.
First, determine whether the laptop is powering on
Connect the laptop to its proper charger and look for a charging or power indicator. Listen for fan or startup sounds, and note whether any lights blink or the computer beeps. These signs can help distinguish a power or startup problem from a blank built-in display, but none alone identifies a failed component.

- Disconnect docks, USB devices, and other nonessential peripherals, then try powering on again.
- If there are no signs of power, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps for your exact model rather than assuming the screen is faulty.
- If lights blink or the laptop beeps, record the pattern and check the model’s manual or support page for its diagnostic meaning.
MSI advises users of its laptops to use the original AC adapter, charge for at least 30 minutes, and remove external devices before continuing with its model-specific steps. That interval is MSI-specific, not a universal requirement. MSI’s no-display guidance explains its procedure.
If the laptop seems to run, try reversible display checks
Raise brightness and remove peripherals
Use the laptop’s brightness keys to raise screen brightness. Very low brightness can make an operating computer look as though its display is off. Disconnect external displays and peripherals, and restart the laptop if it is responsive and safe to do so. Dell outlines these initial checks in its blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.

Reset the graphics driver in Windows
If Windows appears to be running, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft says a beep or screen flicker may indicate that the graphics driver reset. The shortcut is Windows-specific and may not behave identically on every system. See Microsoft’s black- or blank-screen troubleshooting steps.
Check Windows display mode
Press Windows + P, tap P again, and press Enter to cycle through display modes. If Windows is sending the image to another display mode, this may restore the laptop’s built-in screen.

Restart only if the computer is frozen
A forced shutdown may help when the laptop is unresponsive, but it is not a general fix for a hardware fault. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page suggests holding the power button for 20 seconds; HP describes approximately 15 seconds as part of its own power-reset procedure. Since reset steps and durations differ by model, use the laptop maker’s instructions rather than treating either duration as universal. HP’s procedure is described in its power-reset guidance.

Connect a known-good monitor using a port and cable supported by the laptop. Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input. If possible, try another known-good monitor or cable; Microsoft recommends this as a way to help rule out hardware issues. An HDMI cable is useful only if both devices support HDMI video output. Borrowing a suitable cable or display is enough for this check.

Dell explains that an external monitor bypasses the laptop’s LCD, making the test useful for checking whether the built-in display path may be involved. Interpret the results cautiously:
- The external monitor works, but the laptop screen stays blank: The result points toward the internal display path, but it does not establish whether the panel, backlight, cable, connector, or another component is at fault.
- Neither display shows an image: The cause may be elsewhere in startup or graphics hardware. The result does not, by itself, identify a particular fault.

When to seek model-specific diagnostics or repair
Consult the support page for the exact laptop model or an authorized repair provider if basic checks do not restore the image, you see diagnostic blink or beep codes, you suspect physical damage, or the screen remains blank before the operating system loads.
