Laptop batteries lose usable capacity as their lithium-ion cells age. Heat, time, charge-and-discharge throughput, prolonged high charge, and repeated deep discharges all influence the rate. A laptop showing 100% charge may still hold substantially less energy than when new, so the useful question is its full-charge capacity and real-world runtime—not the percentage currently shown.
Lower battery health alone does not require immediate replacement. Keep using a battery if runtime remains adequate and diagnostics are normal; investigate calibration or firmware when readings are erratic; replace a worn battery when portability or reliability suffers. If the case is bulging, the trackpad is lifting, or the battery becomes unusually hot, smells abnormal, smokes, or behaves dangerously, stop using and charging it and arrange professional service.

What laptop battery degradation means
Most laptops use rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer packs. Their cells gradually lose the ability to store energy through two overlapping processes:
Calendar aging
Capacity declines with time even when the laptop is rarely used. Apple describes battery “chemical age” as a function of temperature history and charging pattern, not simply elapsed years (Apple’s battery guidance).

Cycle aging
Charge and discharge throughput also wears the cells. One cycle normally means cumulative use equivalent to 100% of the battery’s capacity, not one uninterrupted trip from 100% to 0%. Using 25% one day and 75% the next is approximately one cycle.
These processes are affected by temperature, workload, storage conditions, battery chemistry, manufacturing variation, and the pack’s charging electronics. Cycle count is useful context, but it is not a pass/fail diagnosis.
The measurements that matter
- Design capacity: the manufacturer’s nominal original capacity, usually in watt-hours (Wh) or milliwatt-hours (mWh).
- Full-charge capacity: the amount the battery-management system currently estimates the pack can hold.
- State of charge: the current percentage shown by Windows or macOS.
- State of health: estimated remaining capacity relative to design capacity.
Use this calculation:
Battery health (%) = current full-charge capacity ÷ original design capacity × 100

That percentage describes stored energy, not a guaranteed number of hours: a bright, high-refresh display or heavy CPU/GPU workload can make a healthy battery run down quickly.

- Repeated shutdowns while the operating system still reports 10%–30% charge.
- A rapid, erratic percentage drop or a reading that remains stuck at one value.
- A sudden large change in reported full-charge capacity.
- Charging that stops unexpectedly, or a charger that is not recognized.
- Case deformation, a lifted trackpad, unusual heat, odor, smoke, or audible hissing.
A sudden capacity change can be a gauge re-estimation after firmware or a calibration event rather than capacity physically disappearing overnight. Compare several reports over time, actual runtime under a repeatable workload, temperature, and the manufacturer’s diagnostics. A short runtime can instead result from high brightness, gaming, background processes, external displays, USB devices, weak wireless signal, performance mode, or a recent driver or operating-system change.
Check battery health on your laptop
Windows 11: create a battery report
- Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Note the path Windows prints, then open the generated HTML file.
- Review Design Capacity, Full Charge Capacity, and Cycle Count when supplied by the firmware.
- Compare Recent Usage, Battery Usage, Battery Capacity History, and Battery Life Estimates across reports made weeks apart.
Some firmware exposes no cycle count or reports incomplete values. Life estimates are estimates, not laboratory measurements. The report also cannot by itself distinguish a low-capacity battery from unusually high system power use.
Manufacturer diagnostics in Windows
- Dell: BIOS diagnostics, SupportAssist, Dell Power Manager, or Dell Command | Power Manager, depending on model and operating system. Dell lists these options and battery-health checks at its support page.
- Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage can show battery health and conservation or charge-threshold controls on supported models.
- Surface: Use the Surface app and Microsoft’s support or diagnostic workflow.
- Other brands: Check BIOS/UEFI diagnostics and the vendor’s power-management utility.
Mac laptops
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings or About This Mac, depending on macOS version.
- Open the battery or system-information panel to view condition and maximum capacity where available.
- For detailed data, open System Information and select Hardware > Power.
- Review cycle count and related power information. Apple’s model coverage and access instructions are at Apple’s cycle-count page.
Labels and locations differ between Intel Macs, Apple-silicon Macs, and macOS releases. Apple says battery-health management is enabled by default on qualifying Intel Mac laptops running macOS 10.15.5 or later, including certain Thunderbolt 3 models; that statement should not be generalized to every Mac (Apple).
Linux
Linux reporting depends on the distribution, desktop environment, kernel, firmware, and hardware. These commands work only when the relevant interface is exposed:
upower -i "$(upower -e | grep BAT)"
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_full_design
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_full
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/cycle_count

Values may be in microamp-hours rather than watt-hours, and some systems expose no cycle count. Treat the output as hardware-dependent evidence, not a universal standard.
How to interpret capacity and cycle count
| Reported health | Practical decision aid |
|---|---|
| 90%–100% | Little estimated capacity loss; runtime can still vary greatly by workload. |
| 80%–89% | Noticeable aging that is often acceptable if runtime meets your needs. |
| 60%–79% | Consider replacement when portability or reliability matters. |
| Below 60% | Strong reason to investigate a replacement, warranty coverage, or a different computer. |
| Sudden major drop | Check calibration, firmware, temperature, swelling, and diagnostics before calling it ordinary wear. |
These bands are guidance, not universal manufacturer limits. Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions, but the cycle limit is model-specific (Apple’s specification). An 80% reading therefore does not automatically mean every laptop battery is defective.
Cycle count should be interpreted with capacity, age, heat history, and symptoms. A low count with poor health can indicate calendar aging, a hot operating environment, a defective pack, or inaccurate reporting. A high count with acceptable capacity can still be normal. Windows may not display a reliable count because the information depends on firmware and battery-interface support (Microsoft hardware guidance).
What accelerates degradation
Heat
Gaming, rendering, blocked vents, direct sun, hot cars, poor airflow, and charging during sustained heavy load can raise cell temperature. Microsoft warns that excessive heat can permanently reduce lithium-ion capacity (Microsoft battery-care guidance). Being plugged in does not necessarily mean the battery is continuously charging, but prolonged high temperature and a high charge state remain unfavorable.
Prolonged high charge
Remaining near 100% for long periods can age a pack faster than operating in a moderate range. Supported laptops may offer smart charging, conservation mode, charge thresholds, or maximum-charge limits such as 60%, 70%, 80%, or 85%. Names and thresholds vary by manufacturer, model, firmware, and operating system.

Deep discharge and storage
Repeatedly running to automatic shutdown is generally harder on a battery than using shallower ranges. Microsoft suggests avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping roughly within 20%–80% when practical, and storing an unused device around 40%–60%. Check a stored laptop periodically because self-discharge can eventually leave it critically low.
Battery University provides additional context on how conditions and usage affect lithium-based battery life (Battery University).
Habits that slow wear
- Enable the laptop maker’s charge-limit or smart-charging feature when the computer is usually docked.
- Keep vents clear; avoid beds, cushions, direct sunlight, and hot vehicles.
- Prevent routine 0% shutdowns and use moderate charge ranges when convenient.
- Store the computer at about 40%–60% for extended non-use and check it periodically.
- Use the correct charger, USB-C Power Delivery profile, and a cable rated for the required power.
- Install firmware updates when the manufacturer identifies battery or thermal fixes, following its instructions.
- Check capacity before important travel and keep a record of trends rather than reacting to one reading.
Do not treat “never charge to 100%,” “unplug immediately at 80%,” monthly full discharges, or a fixed annual percentage loss as universal rules. Charge management, temperature, workload, and battery design determine the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does calibration restore battery health?
Calibration helps the gauge align its displayed upper and lower limits with the battery’s usable range. It may help when the percentage stays high unusually long, jumps erratically, the computer shuts down at 10%–20%, or the estimate becomes inconsistent after firmware or battery replacement.

If calibration is appropriate, save work first, follow the laptop maker’s exact procedure, and stop if the pack becomes hot, swells, smells abnormal, or behaves erratically. Dell’s procedure is model-specific and is documented at Dell’s calibration guide; it should not be assumed to apply to another brand.
Safety: swelling and dangerous behavior
Stop using a swollen or damaged battery. Signs include a lifted or difficult-to-click trackpad, a bulging keyboard or bottom cover, case gaps, creaking or pressure, unusual heat, odor, smoke, or visible damage. Swelling is a safety failure, not merely a low-health reading.
- Stop charging and shut down the laptop if this can be done safely.
- Do not press, puncture, bend, crush, or remove the pack unless trained and equipped for lithium-battery work.
- Keep it away from heat and flammable materials.
- Contact the manufacturer, an authorized provider, or a qualified battery-recycling service.
- Never put a damaged lithium battery in ordinary household trash.
Repeated shutdowns can also result from a failing cell, inaccurate gauge, loose connector, power-management or firmware problems, excessive low-charge load, or thermal protection. A battery stuck at 0%, 1%, 79%, or 100% may reflect a charge threshold, protection mode, reporting error, failed battery, charger negotiation problem, or loose connector. Check charging settings, restart, use a known-good charger with sufficient wattage, update firmware only as directed, and run diagnostics.

Battery replacement is sensible when
- Runtime no longer covers your workday or travel needs.
- Capacity is substantially reduced but the laptop remains fast, supported, and otherwise reliable.
- Diagnostics report a failing pack or shutdowns recur.
- The battery is swollen and the laptop is worth safely repairing.
- The installed repair cost is materially below replacing the computer.
Replacing the laptop may be better when
- The battery is one of several failing components.
- The computer no longer receives security updates.
- Parts are unavailable or the repair approaches the cost of a newer system.
- Performance, memory, storage, display, keyboard, hinges, or repairability are inadequate.
- A replacement battery is difficult to source or authenticity cannot be verified.

| Self-repair | Experienced technicians working from documented procedures with genuine, model-specific parts. | Adhesives, puncture, connector damage, incorrect parts, and fire risk make “replaceable” different from risk-free. |

Microsoft directs Surface owners to authorized providers (provider information) and says its self-repair components are intended for skilled technicians on selected out-of-warranty models (Surface hardware warranty).
Buying a replacement battery or service
Match the exact laptop model and battery part number; similar voltage, connector shape, or capacity does not establish compatibility. Compare the total installed cost, part authenticity, repair warranty, turnaround time, data-handling policy, and whether adhesive, chassis, or top-case components are included. Generic marketplace batteries vary in quality, fit, certification, warranty, and safety; do not assume a generic pack is unsafe or safe without evidence.
As a dated US price snapshot from August 16, 2026, Dell’s official store listed model-specific batteries at $89.99 for 42 Wh, $112.49 for 56 Wh, $124.99 for 54 Wh, and $149.99 for 97 Wh (Dell batteries). Microsoft’s US Store listed examples including a Surface Laptop 13-inch battery at $129.99, a Surface Laptop 5 battery-and-chassis assembly from $212.99, and a Surface Laptop 7th Edition battery from $99.99 (Microsoft Surface accessories). Prices, stock, taxes, and part compatibility can change.
Begin with built-in tools such as Windows Battery Report, macOS System Information, Dell utilities, Lenovo Vantage, the Surface app, or Linux’s UPower. Paid “battery optimizer” software cannot regenerate worn cells and often adds little beyond reporting already available from the operating system.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- Check safety first: stop using a swollen, smoking, leaking, or abnormally hot battery.
- Measure capacity: obtain design capacity, full-charge capacity, cycle count when available, and a report trend.
- Separate runtime from health: repeat a normal workload while noting brightness, performance mode, peripherals, and background activity.
- Investigate abnormal readings: check charge limits, firmware, charger wattage, temperature, and manufacturer diagnostics.
- Consider calibration only for gauge symptoms: use the maker’s model-specific instructions, never as a cure for worn chemistry.
- Compare repair economics: weigh installed battery cost, security support, performance, parts availability, and the condition of the rest of the laptop.
