Laptop Audio: How to Find and Fix the Cause of No Sound

If your laptop has no sound, first check which output device is selected and whether the system or affected app is muted. Then isolate the problem by testing another app or output, disconnecting accessories, and using the troubleshooting steps for your operating system. A missing output device can point to a detection or driver problem; it does not, by itself, prove the speakers are damaged.

Start by identifying what is failing

Notice whether all audio is missing, just one app is silent, sound is unusually quiet or distorted, or the laptop does not list an output device. This distinction helps you avoid changing drivers when the issue is simply an app setting or a different selected output.

  • Only one app is silent: Check that app’s volume and output selection first. On Windows, an app can be muted or routed to a different device even while system sounds work.
  • All sound is missing: Check system mute, volume, and the selected output device.
  • Sound is quiet or distorted: Check system and app volume, then try the operating-system-specific sound options below.
  • No output device appears: Continue to the Windows detection steps if you use Windows. On a Mac, first disconnect external audio devices and check that built-in speakers are selected.

Check volume, mute, and the selected output

Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound and select the output device you intend to use, such as the laptop speakers, headphones, or an external display.
  2. Open the Volume mixer. Check both the system and the affected app for low volume or mute, and confirm the app is routed to the intended output.
  3. If only one app is silent, close and reopen it after correcting its volume or output selection.

When Windows audio is quiet or distorted, Microsoft also recommends testing with audio enhancements turned off and trying a different default audio format. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes. See Microsoft’s guidance for low or quiet sound in Windows.

Mac

  1. Check the app’s own volume control.
  2. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output.
  3. Select Built-in Speakers, raise the output volume, and make sure mute is off.

Disconnect accessories and test the speakers again

Audio can be routed to headphones, a USB audio device, Bluetooth equipment, external speakers, or an external display. Disconnect accessories temporarily, then play audio through the laptop’s built-in speakers.

  • For wired headphones or speakers, check that the cable is firmly connected, the accessory is powered on, and its own volume and mute controls are set correctly.
  • If you use a USB audio device, try another USB port where available.
  • Unplug headphones and retest the laptop speakers.
  • On a Mac, disconnect headphones, USB or Thunderbolt audio devices, external speakers, and external displays while testing internal speakers.

If audio works through one output but not another, you have narrowed down the failing path; that result alone does not establish that an accessory or the laptop’s speakers are defective. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide and Apple’s internal-speaker checks cover these basic isolation steps.

Use the troubleshooting tools for your operating system

Windows 11

Run the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Follow its prompts, then restart the laptop and test audio again. Microsoft recommends this as a starting point for Windows 11 audio problems.

If Windows does not detect an output device

A missing output device may be caused by an audio driver that is missing, outdated, disabled, or failing to load. Microsoft also notes that corrupted audio hardware or a driver can be involved, so the symptom alone is not a diagnosis of physical damage.

When to contact support or arrange service

If Windows troubleshooting and the correct manufacturer driver do not restore audio, contact the laptop manufacturer’s support channel. For a Mac, Apple advises that service may be needed if the built-in speakers still do not work after checking app volume, selecting Built-in Speakers, and disconnecting external devices. In either case, unresolved silence warrants a model-specific diagnosis; it does not make a hardware failure certain.
