The key contrast is the story’s starting point. The film begins with Hal entering the Corps; Lanterns pairs Hal with John and puts a mystery on Earth at the center of its pre-premiere description. How the animated series is different
Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011) is a CG-animated action series from Warner Bros. Animation, produced by Bruce Timm, according to DC’s series page. Its most immediately apparent distinction is its medium and action-series format: it is neither the 2011 live-action film nor the live-action mystery drama described for Lanterns.

What the 2020 Green Lantern project was
DC’s October 2020 announcement described a separate Green Lantern project, then ordered as ten one-hour episodes. Rather than centering on just Hal and John, its announced concept covered a broader group of Lanterns across decades and galaxies, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Kilowog, and Alan Scott. That 2020 concept and the later series Lanterns should not be treated as the same project: the announcement describes a different ensemble and premise, and does not establish that it became Lanterns. Its ten-episode, one-hour description applies to the project as announced in 2020, not to Lanterns.
Does an Earthbound mystery leave out Green Lantern’s cosmic lore?
No. An Earth-centered story can focus on a local investigation while drawing on a much larger fictional universe. DC’s Green Lantern Corps character page describes the Corps as peacekeepers in the known universe, with a standing army of 7,200 members patrolling 3,600 sectors over a history of more than three billion years. Those are fictional-universe figures stated by DC, not real-world statistics.

The useful distinction is emphasis, not an either-or choice: Lanterns is described as grounded and Earthbound, but its pre-premiere material also points toward cosmic settings and familiar Corps-related elements. The available description does not establish how much of the series will take place off Earth.
