Short answer: choose LangGraph when the simulation needs an explicit, inspectable state machine; choose AutoGen when agents mainly communicate through conversations or an event-driven distributed runtime; choose CrewAI when the model is naturally a set of roles completing delegated tasks inside a stateful workflow. None is a proven overall winner: the official material reviewed for these frameworks does not provide a neutral, controlled comparison of quality, latency, cost, or reliability. Your interaction model should decide.
How the three frameworks model a simulation
A multi-agent simulation is more than several prompts running at once. You must define what an agent knows, how messages or actions change shared reality, which transitions are legal, how time advances, and what happens after failure or human intervention. The frameworks differ mainly in where those rules live.

- LangGraph: agents are nodes, transitions are edges, and communication commonly occurs through updates to shared graph state.
- AutoGen: agents exchange messages through conversational teams or event-driven components; the runtime and protocol determine progression.
- CrewAI: a Flow owns application state and control logic, while a Crew supplies autonomous, role-based collaboration and task delegation.
That distinction affects determinism, replay, debugging, scaling, and the amount of architecture you must design yourself.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision axis | LangGraph | AutoGen | CrewAI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary abstraction | Directed graph over shared state | Conversational agents plus an event-driven Core | Stateful Flows containing role-based Crews |
| Control style | Explicit nodes, edges, conditions, cycles and interrupts | Message, team and runtime protocols | Flow logic with delegated Crew tasks |
| Typical communication | State updates, routed calls and supervisor graphs | Agent messages and turn-taking | Role collaboration and task delegation |
| Strongest simulation fit | Auditable state machines, branching, retries and approval gates | Conversation-led teams, protocols and distributed agents | Organizational or business scenarios expressed as roles and tasks |
| Main engineering cost | Designing state, nodes, routing and failure handling | Designing protocols, runtime behavior and durable state | Giving up some low-level transition control for a higher-level team model |
| Quality, latency and cost winner | Not established by a neutral, controlled benchmark in the available official material | ||
The table is an architectural synthesis, not a performance ranking. Identical prompts, models, tools, seeds, evaluator rules and infrastructure would be required for a fair benchmark.

LangGraph: choose a graph when every transition matters
How its model works
LangChain described the approach on January 23, 2024 this way: “In this approach, each agent is a node in the graph, and their connections are represented as an edge. The control flow is managed by edges, and they communicate by adding to the graph’s state.” A simulation can therefore represent an agent, deterministic function or validation step as a node, then make legal movement explicit in edges and conditional routers.
The current overview presents LangGraph as a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for long-running, stateful agents. It is designed to mix deterministic hand-coded operations with LLM-driven operations and to retain fine-grained control over execution.
Why it suits simulations
- Explicit branching: route according to a score, world event, policy check or agent decision instead of relying on an implicit conversation turn.
- Cycles and retries: model negotiation rounds, repeated observations, bounded retries and convergence checks as visible paths.
- Shared state: keep the world state, agent memories, event log, pending actions and approvals in a defined schema rather than hiding them in message text.
- Interrupts and approval gates: pause before an irreversible action, request a human decision, then resume from the same execution point.
- Auditability: inspect which node ran, which state changed and which edge was selected for a particular run.
Examples described for LangGraph include shared-scratchpad collaboration, supervisor routing and hierarchical agent teams. The graph framing is also useful when the workflow is not naturally a conversation, such as a supply-chain disruption with validation, escalation and recovery states.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrade-offs
LangGraph gives you control by making you responsible for architecture. You must define the state schema, merge semantics when several agents write, routing conditions, retry limits, cancellation behavior and what counts as a completed simulation tick. A graph can become difficult to maintain if every prompt detail is encoded as a separate node or if state ownership is ambiguous.
Use a small number of semantically meaningful nodes, keep deterministic validation outside the model where possible, and version the state schema. If an agent can mutate a value, specify whether it replaces the value, appends an event or proposes a change for a reducer to validate.
A practical LangGraph design
- Define a typed world state containing entities, time, event history, pending actions, agent observations and approval status.
- Create one node per meaningful operation: observe, deliberate, propose, validate, apply, notify or terminate.
- Add conditional edges for legal outcomes, including explicit failure and timeout paths.
- Persist checkpoints at boundaries where replay or human resumption matters.
- Record the selected edge and state diff for each step, not only the final answer.
This approach is the best match when a reviewer must explain exactly why the simulation reached a result.
AutoGen: choose conversation or event-driven messaging
Three layers for different stages
Microsoft’s documentation separates AutoGen into three layers. AutoGen Studio is a web interface for prototyping agents without writing code. AgentChat is a Python framework for conversational single-agent and multi-agent applications and requires Python 3.10 or newer. Core is an event-driven framework for scalable multi-agent systems, including deterministic and dynamic workflows, collaboration research and distributed agents that may be implemented across languages.

Why it suits simulations
- Conversation-led behavior: model debates, interviews, deliberation, peer review and turn-taking directly as messages.
- Team protocols: define which participant speaks next, who can terminate a round and how a result is announced.
- Rapid prototyping: use Studio or AgentChat to discover useful roles and prompts before committing to a lower-level runtime design.
- Distributed execution: use Core when agents need event-driven coordination, independent processes or a runtime that can scale beyond one conversational loop.
A conversation is itself a useful simulation substrate when the world changes primarily through speech acts. For example, a council simulation can advance after a proposal, rebuttal and vote, with each message carrying the context required by the next participant.
Trade-offs and state discipline
Conversation-oriented designs can make exact global transitions and deterministic replay less direct than a graph-first design. A transcript may show what agents said without fully specifying the authoritative world state, the order in which side effects occurred or why a message was ignored. Keep a separate state store or use Core components for authoritative events when those details affect the outcome.
Define message schemas instead of passing unstructured prose for important actions. Include sender, recipient, simulation time, causation identifier, intended action, evidence and expiry. Make turn limits, idle-agent timeouts and termination rules explicit. If the simulation spans processes or languages, document serialization, delivery guarantees, duplicate handling and ownership of retries.
A practical AutoGen design
- Prototype the participant roles and turn rules in Studio or AgentChat.
- Write the conversation protocol: valid message types, speaking permissions, round boundaries and termination conditions.
- Separate conversational text from commands that mutate the world.
- Persist an event log and derive current state from accepted events or checkpoints.
- Move to Core when distribution, throughput or independent agent lifecycles become primary requirements.
Choose AutoGen when communication is the central behavior and the runtime should treat messages or events as first-class work units.

CrewAI: choose role-based teams inside a Flow
Flows and Crews have different jobs
CrewAI documentation defines Flows as the backbone of an application. A Flow manages state, events, conditional logic, loops, branching and execution. A Crew is a team of autonomous agents with specialized roles, goals, tools, collaboration and task delegation.
The documented sequence is: the Flow starts, the Flow manages state, the Flow delegates a complex task to a Crew, Crew agents collaborate, and the result returns to the Flow. CrewAI explicitly recommends starting production applications with a Flow and invoking a Crew inside it when a complex autonomous task requires teamwork.
Why it suits simulations
- Readable roles: represent a planner, investigator, negotiator, operator or reviewer with goals and tools that match the scenario.
- Delegation: let a lead agent assign subtasks to specialists without hand-coding every conversation.
- Application control: keep durable state, conditions, loops and external side effects in the Flow.
- Fast organizational modeling: mirror a department, incident team or project group in a way non-specialists can understand.
This model is natural for a business-process simulation: a Flow receives a case, a Crew researches it, specialists produce recommendations, and the Flow validates and records the outcome.

Trade-offs and boundaries
A higher-level team abstraction can reduce low-level transition control compared with a hand-built state machine. If every individual handoff, retry and world-state mutation must be deterministic, keep those decisions in the Flow or use a lower-level orchestration layer for that portion.

Give the Flow a clear contract: inputs supplied to the Crew, outputs accepted, validation performed, retry policy and cancellation behavior. Treat agent prose as a proposal until the Flow or a deterministic tool confirms the change.
A practical CrewAI design
- Define the Flow state and events first, including success, rejection, timeout and human-review paths.
- Specify each Crew role’s goal, tools, authority and expected output schema.
- Invoke the Crew only for work that benefits from autonomous collaboration.
- Validate the Crew result in the Flow before changing authoritative state.
- Emit traceable events for delegation, tool calls, approvals and final decisions.
CrewAI is the most natural choice when stakeholders describe the simulation as people with responsibilities completing work together.
Decision framework: map the simulation to the right abstraction
Choose by control-flow precision
- Select LangGraph if a regulator, game designer or researcher must inspect every legal transition, retry and interrupt.
- Select AutoGen if progression is primarily a protocol of messages and turns, or if agents are independent event-driven services.
- Select CrewAI if a Flow can own the deterministic process while a role-based team handles an open-ended subtask.
Choose by state semantics
Ask what the authoritative state is. If it is a structured graph with reducers, checkpoints and explicit mutations, LangGraph is the closest fit. If it is an append-only event stream generated by messages, AutoGen Core is a strong candidate. If it is application state surrounding delegated work, CrewAI’s Flow gives a clear boundary.
Choose by communication style
| Simulation behavior | Most natural starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Negotiation with repeated proposals and replies | AutoGen | Turns and message protocols are the primary mechanism |
| Emergency response with branching policy gates | LangGraph | Routes, approvals, retries and escalation need explicit edges |
| Company departments delegating a case | CrewAI | Roles, tasks and delegation map directly to the scenario |
| Distributed agents in separate services | AutoGen Core | Event-driven runtime concerns dominate |
| Hierarchical supervisor and specialist loops | LangGraph or CrewAI | Use LangGraph for exact routing; CrewAI for autonomous role delegation |
Choose by human approval and risk
For high-impact actions, place approval at a deterministic boundary. LangGraph exposes this pattern most directly through graph interrupts and resumable state. CrewAI can implement the same policy in the Flow around a Crew call. In AutoGen, make approval a message protocol plus an authoritative event or service; do not rely on a conversational “yes” that is not recorded as a distinct decision.

Choose by engineering capacity
A small team seeking a readable role model may reach a useful prototype fastest with CrewAI. A team already comfortable designing state machines may prefer LangGraph’s explicitness. A team exploring interaction protocols can begin with AutoGen Studio or AgentChat, then adopt Core when runtime distribution matters. These are workflow considerations, not evidence that one framework is faster or cheaper in production.

2. Separate observation, deliberation and action
An agent should observe an allowed view of the world, deliberate with a model, propose an action and pass that action through validation before side effects occur. This separation prevents a persuasive paragraph from silently changing the simulation.
3. Make state ownership explicit
Assign one component as the authority for each mutable field. Use append-only events for important decisions, deterministic reducers for balances or inventories, and version numbers to detect conflicting writes. Never allow two agents to overwrite the same field without a merge rule.
4. Specify failure behavior
- Set a timeout for model calls and tool calls.
- Bound retries and record the reason for each retry.
- Define what happens when an agent is unavailable or returns invalid output.
- Handle duplicate messages and late events.
- Provide cancellation and human takeover paths.
5. Capture observability data
At minimum, log run ID, simulation time, agent identity, prompt or input version, model response, tool calls, state diff, selected route, latency, token usage if available, error and approval decisions. Redact secrets and personal data before storing traces. A transcript alone is insufficient for reconstructing a stateful simulation.
6. Test scenarios, not just prompts
- Deterministic unit tests: reducers, validators, routing conditions and policy rules.
- Protocol tests: malformed messages, unauthorized actions, duplicate delivery and premature termination.
- Replay tests: rerun a recorded event sequence and compare state transitions.
- Adversarial tests: conflicting agents, tool failures, prompt injection and impossible world states.
- Evaluation tests: task success, rule compliance, fairness or safety metrics defined for your simulation.
Run the same scenario across frameworks only after fixing model, prompts, tools, seeds where supported, concurrency and evaluator criteria. Otherwise, observed differences may come from the harness rather than the orchestration framework.
Hybrid architectures: when one framework is not enough
A hybrid can work when responsibilities are sharply separated. For example, an outer LangGraph can own checkpoints, approvals and cancellation while an AutoGen team handles a bounded debate as one node. Alternatively, a CrewAI Flow can invoke a conversation service for a research task and accept only a validated, schema-conforming result.
Use an interface that specifies input state, output schema, timeout, retry policy, trace identifiers and cancellation semantics. Decide which layer owns the authoritative state, and prohibit the inner component from mutating it directly. Document how errors, partial results and human decisions cross the boundary. Without these contracts, a hybrid merely creates two competing orchestrators and makes replay harder.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The agents talk, but the world does not advance correctly”
Store accepted actions as structured events and apply them through deterministic validators. Keep conversational text as evidence or explanation, not as the sole state update.
Best Value
“The run loops forever”
Add maximum rounds, edge or task budgets, wall-clock deadlines and a stagnation detector. Define a useful terminal status for unresolved simulations instead of forcing an invented success.
“Parallel agents overwrite one another”
Use version checks, event ordering or reducers. If conflicts are meaningful, send them to an explicit resolution node, protocol or Flow step.
“A human approval is easy to lose”
Persist a pending-approval record with the exact proposed action, state version, approver identity, expiration and resume token. Resume only if the underlying state is still compatible.
“A role abstraction hides important behavior”
Move critical transitions into Flow logic or graph nodes. Keep autonomous teams bounded to tasks where their internal route does not itself carry regulatory or gameplay significance.
“The prototype cannot be deployed reliably”
Promote experimental prompts and roles into versioned configuration, add durable state and traces, define resource limits, and test recovery after process restart. Studio or a notebook can discover a design; production needs explicit operational contracts.
Final selection
Pick LangGraph for a simulation that is fundamentally a controlled state machine. Pick AutoGen for a simulation that is fundamentally a conversation, protocol or distributed event system. Pick CrewAI for a simulation that is fundamentally an organization of roles carrying out delegated work inside a Flow.
If two descriptions seem equally true, prototype the smallest representative scenario in each style and measure the engineering facts that matter to you: replay success, rule violations, recovery time, trace completeness, model calls and operator effort. Do not claim a universal quality, latency or cost winner without a controlled experiment using your own workload.
