Landslides Damage Hydropower Projects in Myagdi, Disrupting Construction and Power Supply

Floods and landslides in Nepal’s Myagdi district have damaged hydropower construction sites and disrupted electricity evacuation. A Ratopati report dated October 3, 2026, said three under-construction projects totaling 266 MW were affected and eight projects totaling 216 MW were disconnected from the national grid. Those are preliminary, report-specific figures—not a final tally of damage or lost generation.

What happened in Myagdi?

Recent floods and landslides affected hydropower projects in Annapurna Rural Municipality, including facilities under construction and projects that were operating or testing. The October 3 account said roads, electricity and communications were disrupted, preventing a complete assessment of damage. Ratopati’s report attributed information to project officials, but did not provide a final loss estimate or restoration schedule.

The reported figures describe different kinds of impact. “Affected” construction projects are not the same as projects “disconnected from the grid”: the latter may be unable to send electricity because transmission infrastructure is damaged, even if their generating equipment is not reported damaged.

Which construction projects were reported affected?

Middle Kaligandaki: extensive site damage

The 66.3 MW Middle Kaligandaki Hydropower Project, promoted by Hydro Support Pvt. Ltd., was described as the most severely damaged case. Floodwater breached the diversion at the construction site in Sukebagar, deposited silt near the dam site and entered an audit tunnel. Reported damage also included the dam under construction, tunnel, housing, machinery and equipment, construction materials, diesel tank and workshop. The labor camp was swept away, and access to the camp and construction site was cut off. Ratopati reported these details on October 3.

Kaligandaki Gorge and Super Ghaledikhola

The same October 3 report said construction of the 180 MW Kaligandaki Gorge and 9 MW Super Ghaledikhola projects was affected by floods and landslides. It did not provide a comparable itemized damage account for these two sites.

Which operating or testing projects faced interruptions?

Rahughat: powerhouse damage halted testing

Test production at the 40 MW Rahughat project was halted after flood damage to the powerhouse premises, according to Ratopati’s October 3 report. This is a reported physical impact at the project, distinct from a transmission-line outage.

Projects reported shut down after transmission structures were washed away

Ratopati also listed the 5 MW Ghaledikhola, 42 MW Mistrikhola, 38 MW Nilgiri-1, 71 MW Nilgiri-2 and 6 MW Relekhola projects among those shut down after transmission structures were washed away. The October 3 summary reported eight projects totaling 216 MW disconnected from the national grid, but the available account names only these five in its project-specific description. It does not establish that all eight suffered physical damage at their generating sites.

Why can a transmission-line failure stop generation?

A hydropower station needs a functioning route to evacuate electricity to the national grid. If a flood or landslide damages transmission towers or lines, a plant may be unable to deliver power even when its dam, tunnel and powerhouse are not reported to have suffered comparable damage. That makes a grid disconnection an infrastructure and supply interruption, not proof of damage to the generating equipment.

A separate Ratopati report dated September 27 linked damage to the Dana-Kushma 220 kV transmission line with 12 hydropower projects, totaling 358.2 MW, halting power transmission to the grid. Its list included Nilgiri-2, Upper Rahughat, Mistri Khola, Rahughat, Nilgiri-1, Rahughat Mangale, Upper Thulo Khola, Thulo Khola, Ghar Khola, Thapakhola, Relekhola and Ghalemdi. The September 27 report is a different dated snapshot and scope from the October 3 figures; the totals should not be added together or treated as a single confirmed count.

How should the reported capacity figures be read?

Report and date Reported impact What the figure describes
Ratopati, October 3, 2026 Three projects; 266 MW Under-construction projects reported affected by floods and landslides.
Ratopati, October 3, 2026 Eight projects; 216 MW Projects reported disconnected from the national grid.
Ratopati, September 27, 2026 12 projects; 358.2 MW Projects reported to have halted sending electricity to the grid after damage to the Dana-Kushma 220 kV line.

These are incident-report totals, not independently verified final loss statistics. The categories may overlap in project or infrastructure impacts, and the reporting dates and scopes differ. A Department of Electricity Development registry can help check project identities, locations and listed capacities, but it does not validate current damage or outage reports. The department’s hydropower project registry lists, for example, Myagdi Khola at 57.3 MW and Kaligandaki Upper at 65 MW.

What remains unknown?

  • The complete physical damage at all affected sites, because access and communications were disrupted.
  • A project-by-project financial loss or repair-cost total; none was established in the cited reporting.
  • When damaged sites and transmission infrastructure will be restored, or when interrupted generation will resume.

As a result, reported capacity affected or disconnected should not be read as a measure of confirmed permanent loss. The October 3 report explicitly said the overall damage had not yet been fully ascertained.
