Verdict: A used 2020-present Land Rover Defender can be a sound purchase, but its condition depends far more on the individual vehicle’s maintenance, electronics and previous use than on a survey score. UK owner data places the current Defender near the top of its seven-seater class, while reported warning lights, AdBlue issues on diesels, body damage and costly diagnostic work make a careful inspection essential.
Before buying, review the complete service and repair record, operate every electrical feature, inspect the body and underside for off-road damage, drive the exact vehicle, obtain a Defender-capable diagnostic inspection and check its VIN for unrepaired recalls. A survey cannot predict whether one particular Defender will be trouble-free.

How reliable is the current Land Rover Defender?
The current Defender generation is generally described as 2020-present, with the UK reliability review focusing on the Defender 110. What Car?’s review, updated 9 December 2025, reports the following owner-survey results:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Measure | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Defender position among seven-seaters | Second of 12 models | A category ranking from the latest UK owner survey, not a mechanical test |
| Defender reliability score | 96.3% | A survey score; it is not the probability that an individual used car will avoid failure |
| Owners reporting a fault | 14% | Owner-reported faults in that survey population, across the covered vehicles |
| Affected cars still drivable | 87% | Most cars with a reported fault could still be driven, according to the publication |
| Land Rover brand position | 27th of 30 manufacturers, with an 87.1% score | A brand-level statistic, not a Defender-only result |
Those figures describe UK owners’ experiences and may combine different engines, trims, mileages and model years. They do not establish a failure rate for a specific powertrain or region, and they should not be treated as a guarantee. The brand result is even broader: it cannot tell you whether a particular Defender 110, 90 or 130 is well maintained.

Common problems owners report
Electrical warning lights and software-related faults
Owner reports cited by What Car? frequently mention warning lights, especially faults involving the Defender’s electronics. A warning may clear temporarily, return intermittently or involve a control module that a basic scan tool cannot access. The light itself does not identify the failed component.
During a viewing, switch the ignition on without starting the engine and confirm that the instrument-panel warning lamps illuminate for their self-test, then go out after start-up. Operate the infotainment system, cameras, parking sensors, driver-assistance functions, climate controls, windows, mirrors, seat functions, lights, tailgate and any powered accessories fitted to that vehicle. Look for frozen screens, slow booting, error messages, features that work only after a restart, or a warning that reappears during the drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAsk the seller whether a warning has generated diagnostic records, repeated dealer visits or a software update. A vehicle with a documented, completed repair is different from one where the seller simply disconnected the battery or cleared codes.
AdBlue warnings on diesel Defenders
What Car? specifically identifies AdBlue-related warnings among reported diesel concerns. An AdBlue message can relate to the fluid level, a sensor, the dosing system, emissions hardware or an earlier repair that did not solve the underlying fault. Do not assume that topping up the tank proves the system is healthy.

For a diesel, ask when AdBlue was last replenished, whether a countdown-to-no-start message has appeared and whether the vehicle has required repeated emissions-system work. Request invoices or diagnostic printouts rather than relying on a verbal assurance. If a warning is present, have a technician identify the stored fault before you negotiate or complete the purchase.
Bodywork and underbody damage
Some Defenders are used for towing, trails or low-speed off-road driving. What Car? advises checking all corners and looking underneath because damage may not be obvious from standing beside the vehicle. Inspect bumper edges, lower door sections, sills, suspension components, underbody shields, tow equipment, exhaust parts and exposed wiring for scrapes, dents, bent mounts, fresh underseal or mismatched paint.
Use a torch and, where safe, a lift or inspection ramp. Compare left and right sides for damaged protective panels, uneven ride height or displaced clips. Mud packed into hidden areas can conceal corrosion or impact damage. A clean presentation does not rule out a repaired off-road incident, so compare the physical evidence with the history and any available photographs.
Interior trim, steering and expensive repairs
Survey respondents also cited interior trim and steering faults. Check for loose or detached trim, rattles over uneven surfaces, steering-wheel vibration, pulling, inconsistent assistance or noises during full-lock manoeuvres. A steering symptom can be caused by tyres, alignment, suspension or a steering-system component; it needs a proper diagnosis rather than a guess.
The review notes that some owners encountered complex and expensive repairs. Modern Defenders integrate many systems, so a single symptom may require manufacturer-level diagnostics and calibration. Treat repeated visits, unresolved warning lights or vague “monitor it” advice as reasons to pause the deal until an independent specialist explains the fault and likely remedy.

Used Defender inspection: a step-by-step process
Follow this sequence for every candidate, even if the vehicle is being sold by a franchised retailer. A professional inspection should confirm, not replace, your own checks.
- Match the car to its records. Record the VIN, registration, model year, engine, transmission, mileage and advertised specification. Check that service entries and invoices identify the same vehicle and that mileage progresses consistently. Look for gaps, repeated repairs and evidence of scheduled maintenance.
- Read the history before driving. Ask specifically about warning lights, AdBlue messages, software updates, body repairs, steering work, towing or off-road use. Request the results of prior diagnostic scans and details of any parts replaced. A seller who cannot explain an intermittent fault should not be treated as having a fault-free car.
- Inspect the exterior in daylight. Walk around all four corners, checking panel alignment, paint texture, bumper edges, lamps, glass, door seals and the roof. Uneven gaps, overspray or fresh underseal can indicate accident or trail repairs. Verify that tyres are correctly matched and have even wear.
- Inspect underneath. Look for dents, scrapes, bent brackets, leaking fluids, damaged shields, loose wiring and tow-bar impact. If the underside cannot be examined safely, make the purchase conditional on a lift inspection.
- Test every electrical function. Start with the ignition self-test, then operate all switches, screens, cameras, sensors, charging ports, climate zones, seats, windows, mirrors, lights and tailgate functions. Turn the engine off and restart it to see whether a warning returns. Photograph any message and request a written diagnosis.
- Check diesel emissions systems where applicable. On a diesel, inspect the AdBlue level indication and ask about previous warnings, countdown messages and repairs. Do not accept a recently cleared warning without supporting documentation.
- Complete a varied road test. Drive from cold if possible. Test urban speeds, a motorway-speed stretch where legal, braking, steering on a level road, tight turns, bumps and reversing aids. Listen for knocks, drivetrain vibration, wind noise or rattles, and feel for hesitation, harsh shifts, pulling or inconsistent steering assistance.
- Commission an independent inspection. Use a technician familiar with the Defender and verify that the diagnostic equipment can communicate with manufacturer-specific modules. Ask for a written report separating safety-critical defects, immediate repairs and items to monitor.
Do not let a short, warm test drive substitute for records and inspection. Intermittent electronic faults may not appear until the vehicle has been driven, restarted or exposed to a particular condition.

Historical recall examples associated with the current Defender include an oil-filter housing on certain six-cylinder petrol and diesel versions, security-software updates, a water-pump pulley drive belt, exhaust downpipe fixings and a seat-belt pretensioner. That list is illustrative, not an exhaustive or current campaign register.
Two 2026 US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filings require particular attention for eligible vehicles. Applicability depends on production details and VIN, not simply the model year.
| Recall | Vehicles or system described | Risk and buyer action |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA 26V389 | Certain 2020-2026 Defenders; driver-airbag clockspring connector | Fretting corrosion may increase circuit resistance and potentially prevent intended airbag deployment. Confirm whether the VIN is included and whether the remedy is complete. |
| NHTSA 26V248 | Certain 2020-2024 mild-hybrid Defenders; DC-DC converter campaign | Eligibility and remedy status are VIN-specific. Obtain the campaign details from a Land Rover retailer before purchase. |
Run the candidate’s VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and ask a Land Rover retailer to check its internal campaign records. NHTSA says recall repairs are free. An “unlisted” result for another Defender of the same year does not clear yours: campaign eligibility and completion are recorded per vehicle, and records can change as campaigns are issued or updated. Additional recall and investigation information is available from NHTSA’s recall resources.

Can a generic OBD-II scanner check a Defender?
A consumer code reader can be useful for preliminary fault-code retrieval, but compatibility is limited. Generic OBD-II access may cover engine-related emissions codes while missing manufacturer-specific modules for airbags, body electronics, driver assistance, suspension or other systems. Some tools may display a code without the manufacturer’s description or required test procedure.
Before relying on a scan, confirm that the device supports the exact Defender model year and modules you need. Do not erase codes before recording them; clearing a code can remove useful evidence and reset readiness monitors. A specialist diagnostic inspection remains necessary when warning lights, stored faults or intermittent symptoms are present.
How to compare two used Defenders
Do not choose between two vehicles by model year alone. Compare the evidence for each individual car using the same checklist:
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Model year and engine | Are the vehicles the same generation, engine type, hybrid configuration and transmission? The available sources do not establish a defensible engine-by-engine reliability ranking. |
| Mileage and service record | Which car has continuous, vehicle-matched invoices and fewer unexplained gaps or repeat repairs? |
| Warning-light history | Have warnings recurred, and is there a documented diagnosis and completed repair? |
| Body and underside | Which vehicle shows less impact, trail or towing-related damage, and can both be inspected on a lift? |
| Diagnostic inspection | Does a Defender-capable scan identify stored faults, pending codes or module communication problems? |
| Recall status | Are all VIN-specific campaigns closed, with proof of completed remedies? |
| Test-drive behavior | Which car has smoother steering, braking, shifting and electronic operation when cold and warm? |
A newer or lower-mileage example is not automatically the better buy if its history is incomplete, its warnings have been cleared or its underside shows hard use. Prefer the vehicle with verifiable maintenance, transparent repairs and a clean specialist inspection.
When to walk away or renegotiate
- There is an unresolved airbag, braking, steering or other safety warning.
- The VIN is unavailable, does not match the paperwork or has an open recall that the seller will not address.
- The seller refuses an independent inspection or a lift check.
- AdBlue or electrical warnings recur without a documented diagnosis.
- Underbody damage, fluid leaks or repaired structural areas are inconsistent with the stated use.
- Diagnostic equipment cannot access the relevant modules, leaving a major symptom unexplained.
A minor trim defect or isolated, documented software update may be negotiable. Safety-system faults, repeated unresolved warnings and unexplained impact damage deserve a pause or a different vehicle rather than an optimistic assumption.
