Matisse Thybulle has already drawn attention for his defense at Lakers training camp: a CBS Sports/RotoWire report published October 2, 2026, says he recorded at least seven steals across Los Angeles’ first two practices. That is an eye-catching practice tally—not a game statistic or proof of a defined role. The report attributes the number to Daniel Starkand of LakersNation.com and says coach JJ Redick highlighted Thybulle’s ability to disrupt passing lanes.
What Thybulle has done in the first Lakers practices
The early story is about activity and anticipation. The October 2 CBS Sports/RotoWire report says Thybulle had at least seven steals in the Lakers’ first two practices, with the tally attributed to Daniel Starkand of LakersNation.com. It describes Redick as emphasizing Thybulle’s knack for getting into passing lanes; the report also paraphrases a joke about teammates needing to avoid throwing the ball when Thybulle is in position to make a play.
Because the figure comes from practice reporting rather than an NBA box score, it should be read as an early-camp observation. It does not establish how often Thybulle will generate steals in games or how much the Lakers’ team defense has improved.
Why his defensive reputation matters
Los Angeles announced Thybulle’s signing on July 27, 2026, describing him as a two-time All-Defensive Second Team selection, in 2021 and 2022. The team also said he ranked among the NBA’s top 20 in steals in four of his seven seasons and averaged 1.6 steals over 377 regular-season games. Those credentials help explain why his passing-lane activity is drawing notice, though past recognition alone does not determine his minutes or assignments in Los Angeles.

What his Portland numbers say—and what they do not
In its signing announcement, the Lakers reported that Thybulle’s previous season with Portland included 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in 16.0 minutes per game, along with 39.8 percent shooting from three-point range. These are figures supplied by the Lakers for that Portland season. They give context for his production in a limited-minute role; they do not predict his Lakers output or guarantee a particular place in the rotation.
What his Lakers role could look like
CBS Sports/RotoWire says Thybulle’s defensive ability could give him a chance to earn consistent minutes amid competition on the wing. That is a possibility, not a confirmed rotation decision. Whether his practice activity becomes a regular-game contribution will depend on the role the coaching staff gives him and how he fits alongside the other wings.

A meaningful in-season assessment would need comparable game evidence: minutes, defensive assignments, steals or deflections over a defined span, availability and shooting. The cited training-camp report does not provide a Lakers-wing comparison using a shared measure, and the available material includes no team defensive rating showing a change attributable to Thybulle.
