What the 86-rated Xbox game is
Lacuna – A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure was released on Xbox Series X on December 21, 2021. DigiTales Interactive developed it and Assemble Entertainment published it. The game combines a narrative adventure with detective investigation: you collect evidence, question people and make decisions that alter the story.

The 86 rating is a Metacritic critic score based on six critics, not a sales figure and not an average Xbox user rating. The same platform record lists a 7.4 user score from 31 user reviews, which is a separate measure with a much smaller sample.

That description, reproduced from an Adventure Gamers review, captures the game’s tone: a science-fiction setting presented through noir investigation rather than a combat-first action structure. The Indie Game Website review likewise praised its treatment of choice and consequence.
Can you play Lacuna without Game Pass?
The wording of the offer resembles Xbox Free Play Days, a promotion that can let eligible Xbox owners play a selected game for a limited period without a Game Pass subscription. A report on that promotion format says Series X|S owners could play a featured title without a Core subscription.

That does not establish that every owner can currently launch Lacuna for free. The available evidence does not verify Lacuna’s exact Free Play Days dates, participating regions, or whether the offer is still active on October 16, 2026. Xbox promotions can end or vary by account and market.
How to check the offer on your Xbox
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Search for Lacuna – A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure and open the official game listing.
- Check the purchase panel for wording such as “Free Play Days,” “Play for free,” or a stated end time. Do not rely only on a search-result tile.
- Confirm that the listing shows your console generation and your account’s region. If the page shows only a purchase price, the free promotion is not available to that account at that moment.
- Read the promotion’s end date and any Game Pass or online-multiplayer requirement before starting. If no end date appears, treat the offer as unconfirmed and check the Xbox promotions page again.
The official product page is also the place to verify current price, platform support, optimization details, publisher, developer, release date and capabilities. Those fields can change independently of third-party reports.

What kind of adventure is Lacuna?
A detective-led story
You play through an investigation in a futuristic society, following leads and deciding how to respond to people and evidence. The central appeal is narrative tension: choices can change what happens later, so information gathered in one scene may affect a later outcome.
Noir atmosphere instead of a combat focus
The game is framed as science-fiction noir, with a “jazzpunk” future and a hard-boiled mood. That makes it a better fit for players who prefer dialogue, investigation and branching consequences to a conventional action campaign.

Why the score needs context
An 86 from six critics is a strong reception signal, but six reviews is a limited base. It tells you how a small group of professional reviewers evaluated the game; it does not guarantee that every player will enjoy its pacing, writing or decision systems. The 7.4 user score from 31 reviews provides a different perspective but is not interchangeable with the critic score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow long is the free trial?
No verified trial length is established for this Lacuna offer. Free Play Days events normally publish a specific closing time, but that time must be read from the live regional listing rather than inferred from the game’s release date or review coverage. If the listing does not show a deadline, there is no reliable basis for promising a number of free hours or days.

Is Lacuna free in every region?
That is also unconfirmed. Xbox promotional eligibility can differ by country, storefront and account. A Series X or Series S owner who cannot see a free-play label may be outside the participating region, may be checking after the event ended, or may be viewing a listing that requires purchase. The storefront attached to your Microsoft account is the decisive source.
What happens when the promotion ends?
Unless you separately own the game or have access through an applicable subscription, the free-play entitlement ends when the event closes. The store page will then show the normal purchase or subscription options available in your region. Save data and achievements earned during a promotional play period may remain associated with your account, but continued access depends on owning or otherwise licensing the game.
Bottom line for Series X|S owners
Lacuna – A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure is the strongest match for the “86-rated sci-fi adventure” description: it is an Xbox Series X narrative detective game with an 86 Metacritic critic score from six critics. The no-Game-Pass claim fits the way Xbox Free Play Days can work, but Lacuna’s exact dates, regional eligibility and current status are not verified here. Check the live Xbox listing before downloading, and use the deadline shown there—not a headline or old report—to decide whether the offer is still active.
