A 2013 study demonstrated charge separation and reported gold nanoparticles, porous metals, nanoscale coatings and metal–polymer hybrid foams. The work established a proof of concept, not a settled explanation of how the nanomaterials formed.
What is a Leidenfrost drop?
When a liquid droplet meets a sufficiently hot surface, some liquid at its underside vaporizes rapidly. The resulting vapor layer supports the rest of the drop above the surface, allowing it to move while levitating on its own vapor cushion. Chemistry World’s 2013 account describes the underside vaporizing to create a cushion of steam.

The precise temperature at which this happens depends on the liquid, surface and experimental conditions. In the experiments reported by Abdelaziz and colleagues, the Leidenfrost state was observed above 230 °C on the materials and under the conditions they used; that value is not a universal threshold.

How can a levitating drop be used for chemistry?
The drop is more than a demonstration of heat and vapor. The 2013 study, “Green chemistry and nanofabrication in a levitated Leidenfrost drop,” reports using a levitating liquid as a small reaction environment. The authors measured charge separation in the drops and used salt solution to enhance the measured effect.

For charge measurements, the team built a closed apparatus intended to improve measurement accuracy and limit effects from air, impurities and charge leakage. This specialized measurement setup is distinct from simply placing a drop on a hot plate.
How did the study make gold nanoparticles?
For its gold demonstration, the study used a 2 mL droplet of 10 mM aqueous tetrachloroauric(III) acid solution at approximately pH 2.3. The drop was placed on a hot plate maintained at 270 °C. The authors report that it changed from yellow to plasmonic red; transmission electron microscopy (TEM) identified gold nanoparticles in the resulting material.

These are conditions and observations from that specific experiment, not a general recipe guaranteed to work with other solutions, surfaces or equipment. The paper also reports proof-of-concept production of nanoporous gold, nanoscale coatings and metal–polymer hybrid foams.
What explains the reaction, and what remains uncertain?
The authors proposed that an overheated interface, rapid evaporation and water-ion chemistry may help explain the observed chemistry. They did not establish that explanation as the definitive mechanism. In particular, they stated that the exact nanosynthesis mechanism—including the roles of fast evaporation and thermocapillary effects—remained unknown and needed further study.

The paper therefore supports two narrower conclusions: charge separation was measured in the levitating drops, and nanomaterial formation was demonstrated under the reported experimental conditions. It does not resolve every step by which the products formed.
What does “green chemistry” mean here?
The authors characterize the method as a water-based, one-step approach. That description does not, by itself, demonstrate lower lifecycle impacts than other synthesis methods, commercial-scale feasibility, or reproducibility across materials and laboratories. The study is a laboratory proof of concept, not a full environmental or industrial comparison.

Can a consumer hot plate reproduce the experiment?
The study used a laboratory hot plate and heated substrates, along with a specialized closed apparatus for charge measurements and TEM analysis for particle characterization. Its reported results do not show that a consumer hot plate alone can reproduce the nanochemistry. Reproducing the work would require appropriate laboratory equipment, measurement methods and expertise.
