Lab-grown chicken has been served in a small number of U.S. restaurants, but those 2023 debut meals do not show that it is on menus or in stores today. The Food and Drug Administration’s February 2026 inventory lists completed consultations for three cultured-chicken products, yet a consultation is only one part of the path to sale. No dependable date for widespread restaurant or grocery access has been established.
What “lab-grown chicken” means
Lab-grown chicken is made by growing animal cells rather than raising and slaughtering a whole bird. Federal sources and the initial U.S. product labels use the term cell-cultivated chicken. Other terms in public use include “cultivated,” “cell-cultured,” and “cell-based.” The Congressional Research Service describes the terminology and reports USDA approval of “cell-cultivated chicken” for the initial products: CRS overview of cell-cultivated meat.

Has lab-grown chicken been sold in the United States?
Yes. The first reported U.S. restaurant sales took place in July 2023: UPSIDE Foods served its product at Bar Crenn in San Francisco on July 1, and GOOD Meat served its product at China Chilcano in Washington, D.C., on July 5. The Congressional Research Service reports these as launch events, not as evidence of current service. A historic restaurant debut does not establish that either venue offers the dish now.

They show that limited restaurant service has occurred—not that cultivated chicken is broadly available to U.S. diners.

What the FDA consultation records establish
The FDA’s inventory, marked updated February 2026, lists completed consultations for three cultured-chicken products. The dates are regulatory milestones; they are not dates when products became available to consumers.
| Company | FDA inventory response date | What the date establishes |
|---|---|---|
| UPSIDE Foods | November 16, 2022 | FDA completed a pre-market consultation for cultured chicken cell material. |
| GOOD Meat | March 20, 2023 | FDA response date for its cultured chicken cell material consultation. |
| Believer Meats | July 24, 2025 | FDA response date for its cultured chicken cell material consultation; the record also lists additional FDA correspondence dated September 24, 2025. |
Dates and entries are from the FDA inventory of completed pre-market consultations. The Believer Meats record describes cultured Gallus gallus domesticus chicken cells with fibroblast characteristics in cell-biomass form: FDA’s Believer Meats consultation record.

- Tips - Please carefully check the appearance, size and shape of the product before placing an order, and verify that it is the model you need
FDA describes its process as a voluntary, product-specific pre-market consultation. It evaluates information about the production process and cultured cell material, including cell lines and banks, manufacturing controls, and inputs. FDA says: “We evaluated the information the firm submitted to the agency and have no further questions at this time about the firm’s safety conclusion.” That statement is specific to the firm and its submission; it is not a blanket safety finding for every cultivated-chicken product. See the FDA’s overview of human food made with cultured animal cells.

Federal oversight is divided by production stage. Under the agencies’ March 2019 agreement, FDA oversees cell collection, cell banking, growth, and differentiation. For covered poultry products, oversight transitions to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) at harvest; FSIS oversees subsequent processing, inspection, and labeling.

- Good Material - Surface plastic immersion treatment is suitable for long-term outdoor use
- Convenient - Good flexibility supports bending and forming
- 1/4 inch fine mesh - Small-sized square mesh is used in scenarios where precise screening or Defense of small animals is required
- Diverse Functions - It can solve various problems in courtyard life such as raising chickens, protecting the garden, preventing rats, and repairing, etc
- Tips - Please check the details carefully to verify whether the product is suitable
FSIS says establishments that harvest cultured meat or poultry need a grant of inspection. Applicable federal requirements include sanitation, hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) systems, and prior label approval. In other words, an FDA consultation record documents one part of a product-specific regulatory pathway; it does not by itself demonstrate that the product has completed the USDA-FSIS steps needed for sale. See the FSIS overview of cell-cultured meat and poultry and the FDA’s explanation of its oversight.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When will it be widely available?
There is no supported date for broad grocery or restaurant availability. FDA says manufacturers are generally working to scale their processes so they can produce consistent amounts at competitive prices, but its overview does not give a timetable. The available sources also do not establish current restaurant menus, grocery listings, or state-by-state availability. For a meal today, check a restaurant’s current menu directly rather than relying on reports of the 2023 launches.

FDA’s overview also states that no country has been determined equivalent to export cultured meat or poultry products to the United States, so commercial imports are not allowed under the agency’s explanation. That import status can change; consult the current FDA page for its latest statement.
