Choose by the console generation first: shadPS4 is the project to investigate for PlayStation 4 games, while KytyPS5 targets PlayStation 5 software. They are not interchangeable emulators for one library. Both are early-stage, so a game reaching a menu is not proof that it is playable to completion. Check the current title report for the exact emulator build before downloading or configuring either project. For controllers, shadPS4 explicitly documents Xbox and DualShock support plus configurable keyboard and mouse input; the KytyPS5 documentation reviewed here does not establish controller support.
The short answer
Your game determines the emulator. Use shadPS4 as the starting point for a PlayStation 4 title. Use KytyPS5 for a PlayStation 5 title. Installing the other project will not make that game compatible, because the projects target different console generations.

| Question | shadPS4 | KytyPS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Target generation | PlayStation 4 | PlayStation 5 |
| Documented desktop targets | Windows, Linux and macOS | Windows and Linux; macOS is experimental |
| Controller information in the reviewed README | Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box; keyboard and mouse mappings are configurable | No controller support documented, so behavior is unverified |
| Project maturity warning | Early emulator; the README says not to expect a flawless experience | Experimental translation layer; compatibility, stability and performance vary by version |
| Game-status source | Official compatibility resource | Community compatibility list |
The practical choice is therefore a two-step decision: identify whether the game is a PS4 or PS5 release, then read the current compatibility entry for that title and build. Do not treat “boots” as equivalent to “works.”

shadPS4: an early PlayStation 4 emulator
The shadPS4 project describes itself as an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS. Its core does not include a graphical interface for ordinary users; the project directs end users to the QtLauncher. The README warns that a flawless experience should not be expected and points to the project’s game-compatibility resource for title-specific information.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
That distinction matters when you see a screenshot or a short video. A successful launch may demonstrate only that the emulator can initialize part of the title. It does not establish stable graphics, working audio, reliable saves or an end-to-end playthrough.
KytyPS5: a PlayStation 5 translation layer
KytyPS5 describes itself as a translation layer for PlayStation 5 software on Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its project page says it can boot 2D and 3D games, while also warning that compatibility, stability and performance can differ between versions and that crashes or graphical glitches may occur.
KytyPS5 does not distribute games or copyrighted system software. You must supply files obtained legally and should use the project’s current compatibility list rather than assuming that a title shown in a demonstration is ready for regular play.

Compatibility is a title-and-build question
Compatibility reports are useful only when you read the status precisely. Use these three levels when evaluating a report or your own test:
- Booting: the emulator starts the executable or reaches an initial screen. This is the weakest signal.
- Reaching gameplay: you can pass menus and begin an interactive section. Crashes, missing effects, broken input or unusable saves may still appear later.
- Completing play: a report describes a sustained, reliable path through the game. This is the meaningful standard for replacing a console session, and it should be claimed only when the report supports it.
Before choosing a build, open the relevant project’s current compatibility source and search for the exact game edition. Record the emulator version, operating system and reported status. A result from one release cannot automatically be applied to another, because both projects are changing quickly.

For shadPS4, the official compatibility-report repository asks contributors to identify the game and emulator version and include an untouched log when reporting a change. That information lets you compare your result with the report instead of relying on an undated “works” label.
Pick by game generation, not by the console name on the box
If your game is a PlayStation 4 release
Start with shadPS4. Confirm the title’s entry in the compatibility repository, then match the listed emulator build and any required firmware modules. If the entry reports only a boot, plan for testing rather than a finished experience.

If your game is a PlayStation 5 release
Start with KytyPS5 and consult its community compatibility list. Look for notes about the exact build, graphics problems, crashes and whether the report reaches gameplay. A PS5 title that also has a PS4 edition is a special case: the edition you own determines which emulator target is relevant. Do not assume that a PS5 disc or download will run as a PS4 program, or that a PS4 version automatically gains PS5 compatibility.
If you are unsure which edition you own
Check the product’s system designation in your console library or on the original purchase record. Do not select an emulator from the game’s marketing name alone; many franchises have releases on both generations, and compatibility reports are normally organized around the specific executable or edition.
Operating-system differences that can change the decision
| Host system | shadPS4 guidance | KytyPS5 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Documented target; use the project’s current release instructions and QtLauncher. | Documented target; check the release and compatibility notes for your game. |
| Linux | Documented target; verify the requirements for the distribution and release you choose. | Documented target; verify the requirements for the distribution and release you choose. |
| macOS on Apple silicon | The README lists macOS support; confirm the current release’s requirements before installing. | Experimental. The project describes x86-64 execution through Rosetta 2 and Vulkan through MoltenVK. |
| Intel Mac | The current shadPS4 README says Intel Macs are unsupported. | The project labels macOS experimental; check current release notes before treating any result as expected. |
| macOS version | The current README specifies macOS 26.0 or later. | No equivalent stable macOS promise is made; support is described as experimental. |
These statements are project documentation, not a guarantee that every game will perform the same way on every machine. If you are choosing between operating systems, Windows and Linux are the explicitly documented common targets. On macOS, shadPS4 has a concrete version requirement and an Intel exclusion, while KytyPS5’s path is experimental and adds translation layers that can introduce another source of failure.

Controller fit: where shadPS4 is clearer
shadPS4 controller support
The shadPS4 README states that Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box. It also documents customizable keyboard and mouse input, including the ability to map mouse movement to joystick input. That gives you a fallback when a game or desktop setup does not suit a gamepad.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Works out of the box” describes the project’s documented input support; it does not mean every button, motion feature or game-specific behavior is guaranteed in every build. If a title has unusual input requirements, check its compatibility notes and test the mappings in QtLauncher before starting a long session.
KytyPS5 controller support
The KytyPS5 README reviewed for this guide does not document controller support. Do not infer it from the emulator’s ability to boot a game, from a controller working with a physical PlayStation, or from another user’s setup on a different build. Check the current release notes or ask the maintainers about the precise controller and version you intend to use. Until that information is confirmed, treat KytyPS5 controller behavior as unverified.
How to approach a shadPS4 setup
- Identify the game edition. Confirm that the executable is a PlayStation 4 release and write down the title and region or edition if the compatibility entry distinguishes them.
- Read the current compatibility report. Open the official repository and find the game’s status, emulator version and notes. Separate a boot report from a gameplay or completion report.
- Check the host requirements. Windows and Linux are documented targets. If you are on macOS, confirm that you meet the current README requirement of macOS 26.0 or later; Intel Macs are not supported according to that README.
- Install the user interface. The emulator core does not include a GUI for ordinary use. Follow the project’s direction to use QtLauncher rather than expecting the core alone to provide a complete desktop workflow.
- Prepare legally obtained firmware modules. The compatibility repository notes that some PlayStation 4 firmware modules are needed for games to behave properly and must be extracted from a legally owned PS4. Do not download those modules from an unauthorized source.
- Connect and test your input. An Xbox or DualShock controller should be recognized according to the README. If you prefer a keyboard and mouse, open the configurable mappings and assign movement and buttons before launching the game.
- Capture a clean baseline. If your result differs from the report, reproduce the issue without modifying the log and retain the untouched log, game version and emulator version. Those are the details the project asks for when contributors report compatibility changes.
Stop at the compatibility check if the report describes an unplayable state. Installing multiple builds or changing random graphics options rarely fixes a title that has not yet reached reliable gameplay in the project.
How to approach a KytyPS5 setup
- Confirm that you need a PS5 target. Verify that the game is the PlayStation 5 edition rather than a PS4 release of the same title.
- Read the community compatibility list first. Match the title and build, and note whether the report reaches gameplay or only demonstrates a boot. Record known crashes and rendering defects before you install.
- Choose a documented host. Windows and Linux are the primary documented targets. If you use macOS, treat the result as experimental; the project describes x86-64 execution through Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon and Vulkan through MoltenVK.
- Obtain software legally. KytyPS5 says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software. Use only game and system files you are legally entitled to use, following the laws that apply where you live.
- Install the exact release you evaluated. Compatibility can change between versions. Keep the build number or release identifier with your notes so that a later update does not silently change the conditions of your test.
- Test a short, repeatable sequence. Launch the title, reach the same scene described in the report and watch for crashes, missing graphics, input failure and save problems. Record the result instead of assuming a successful boot represents the whole game.
- Report differences responsibly. Include the game, emulator version, host operating system and a concise description of where behavior diverges from the compatibility entry. Avoid uploading copyrighted game or system files.
Decision framework for a mixed library
If you own games from both generations, there is no single winner to install and forget. Use this sequence for each title:

- Use legally obtained game and firmware files, and keep your own test details separate from files that cannot be redistributed.
| Your situation | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 game on Windows or Linux with an Xbox or DualShock pad | shadPS4 | The generation, host and documented controller path align. |
| PS4 game on an Intel Mac | Neither without a supported host | The current shadPS4 README excludes Intel Macs; KytyPS5 is for PS5 software and does not solve the generation mismatch. |
| PS5 game on Windows or Linux | KytyPS5, after checking the title report | The target generation and documented host align, but compatibility remains title- and build-specific. |
| PS5 game on macOS | KytyPS5 only as an experiment | macOS support is experimental, with Rosetta 2 and MoltenVK considerations and no verified controller statement in the reviewed README. |
| Keyboard-and-mouse preference for a PS4 title | shadPS4 | The README documents customizable mappings, including mouse movement to joystick input. |
Common failure modes and what they mean
The game opens, then crashes
Classify this as a compatibility problem, not a controller problem, unless the report specifically identifies input as the trigger. Compare your emulator build and game edition with the current title entry. A booting executable can still fail when it loads a later scene, shader or save system.
Graphics are missing or heavily corrupted
Look for rendering notes in the title’s compatibility entry and check whether the issue is tied to a particular release. KytyPS5’s project documentation explicitly warns that graphical glitches may occur. Avoid presenting a screenshot-free boot as evidence that the graphics are production-ready.
The controller is not detected in shadPS4
Confirm that the device is an Xbox or DualShock controller covered by the README’s statement, then open the configurable input mappings and verify each assignment. If you are using a different device or a remapping layer, the project’s out-of-the-box statement may not apply to that hardware path.
The controller is not detected in KytyPS5
The reviewed README does not establish controller support, so there is no documented baseline to promise. Check current release notes and contact the maintainers with the exact controller, operating system and KytyPS5 build. Do not assume that a fix for another emulator transfers to KytyPS5.
macOS installation fails
For shadPS4, verify the macOS 26.0-or-later requirement and the Intel-Mac exclusion in the current README. For KytyPS5, remember that macOS is experimental and depends on the project’s stated Rosetta 2 and MoltenVK path on Apple silicon. A failure on macOS does not demonstrate that the same release fails on Windows or Linux.

A report asks for firmware files
For shadPS4, the compatibility project says some PS4 firmware modules are needed and must be extracted from a legally owned console. Treat that as a lawful dumping task, not as an invitation to download a firmware archive. KytyPS5 likewise says it does not provide copyrighted system software.
Legal and practical boundaries
Both projects separate the emulator code from copyrighted games and system software. KytyPS5 explicitly says it does not distribute either. The shadPS4 compatibility instructions specify that required PS4 firmware modules should come from a PS4 you legally own. Use your own legally obtained files, follow local law and avoid links or instructions that facilitate unauthorized downloads.
Keep backups of your configuration and logs, but do not share copyrighted game images or firmware when asking for help. A useful bug report contains versions, host details and an untouched log—not someone else’s proprietary files.
The practical verdict
For a PS4 library, shadPS4 is the clear fit because it targets that generation and documents Xbox, DualShock and configurable keyboard/mouse input. For a PS5 library, KytyPS5 is the relevant project, but its experimental status means you must verify each game’s current report and controller behavior before committing to it. Windows and Linux are the common documented platforms; macOS requires the project-specific caveats above. In every case, choose from the exact game-and-build status, not from whether an emulator can merely reach a title’s opening screen.
