Kyle Chandler says watching the final scene he shared with Aaron Pierre in Lanterns brought him to tears. Pierre, meanwhile, called the chance to play John Stewart a gift—and said people had told him the series moved them. The two actors discussed the finale and their characters during an HBO panel hosted by The Ringer’s Mallory Rubin, according to Tom’s Guide’s October 5, 2026 report.
What Chandler said about the goodbye
Chandler told Tom’s Guide that seeing the last scene he shared with Pierre affected him emotionally. “I had to gently wipe away a tear,” he said, adding that he hid his reaction from his wife. He described the moment as a goodbye between their characters.

In separate coverage of a post-finale press conference, Reactor reported Chandler’s interpretation of Hal and Halogram: “were never fully separated; he [Halogram] is his [Hal’s] subconscious. So there’s a lot to play with there.” Reactor also described Chandler’s view of the farewell as an emotional culmination of Halogram’s experiences with John.
Spoilers: what the finale reveals
Major finale spoilers follow. Tom’s Guide reports that the finale reveals who killed Hal Jordan, resolves whether another Manhunter is present, and ends with John Stewart taking the Green Lantern ring and accepting the role of Earth’s protector. The report says John uses revised words to establish that responsibility. These are details from the outlet’s finale summary.

Reactor’s account provides context for the relationship behind the farewell: it describes John and Halogram’s later-season bond as father-son-like and says Chandler connected Halogram’s development with Hal’s own history. That framing helps explain why the goodbye could carry emotional weight beyond a conventional mentor-and-successor handoff.
Pierre on playing John Stewart
Pierre spoke with gratitude about the role. “To call this opportunity to play John Stewart a gift would be a massive understatement,” he said. He added, “If I could choose to play any superhero, it would be John Stewart.”

He also recounted positive encounters with viewers. “And people from every walk of life have told me that this, that and the third have moved me, and I can’t wait for the next episode.” That is Pierre’s description of conversations with people who approached him, not a survey or measure of audience opinion.

Tom’s Guide says the actors had not seen the completed episodes until the season premiere, even though production had wrapped nearly a year and a half earlier. That delay meant their response to the finale came after time away from the shoot and from the scenes they had performed together.

The panel’s Green Lantern ring question
The panel also asked what the actors would do if they had a Green Lantern ring for 24 hours. Tom’s Guide reports that Pierre was stumped. Chandler imagined a construct that would make people acting to do harm fade from view.
