Kuo: Apple Could Ship 15–20 Million Fewer iPhone 14 Pro Models in Q4 2022

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro shortage was real, but “20 million fewer” was not an Apple-confirmed final shipment number. On November 29, 2022, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimated that combined iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments in the fourth quarter would fall 15–20 million units below earlier expectations. Apple had already confirmed that COVID-19 restrictions and reduced capacity at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou facility would lower shipments and extend delivery times.

What the 20 million figure actually meant

Kuo’s estimate applied to Q4 2022 shipments of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max together. It did not describe Apple’s entire iPhone lineup, a single physical model, or a permanent reduction in annual demand.

Figure What it represented Qualification
15–20 million units Kuo’s estimated shortfall versus previous expectations Analyst forecast, not an Apple disclosure
70–75 million units Kuo’s revised estimate for Pro-series Q4 shipments Approximate analyst range
80–85 million units Market consensus cited in contemporary coverage Secondary-reported consensus; methodology and baseline were not specified

The ranges do not line up as a single, transparent calculation: 70–75 million versus 80–85 million implies a difference of roughly 5–15 million units, while Kuo’s wording described a 15–20 million gap against an earlier expectation. Those figures should therefore be treated as different forecast baselines, not combined into an audited total. The estimate was reported by BGR in its summary of Kuo’s note.

What Apple officially confirmed

In a November 6, 2022 statement, Apple said COVID-19 restrictions had temporarily affected its primary iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max assembly facility in Zhengzhou. The site was operating at “significantly reduced capacity.” Apple said demand for both Pro models remained strong, while shipments would be lower than previously anticipated and customers would face longer waits. Apple did not publish a precise number of missing units, a revised official fourth-quarter forecast, a revenue-loss estimate, or a count of customers who abandoned their purchases. That is why the 15–20 million figure must remain attributed to Kuo rather than presented as Apple’s final result.

Why Zhengzhou caused such a large disruption

Foxconn’s Zhengzhou complex was the principal affected assembly site for these phones. COVID-control measures reduced operating capacity, and worker protests and labor unrest added further disruption, according to contemporary analyst and media reports. A shutdown or slowdown at a highly specialized, high-volume plant cannot be replaced immediately by simply moving orders elsewhere.

Why production could not shift overnight

  • Pro models use a distinct component mix and production process.
  • Other assemblers lacked equivalent ready-to-run capacity.
  • Transferring work requires tooling, worker training, quality validation and logistics changes.
  • Even after another factory receives orders, mass shipments take time to ramp.

Kuo reportedly said Pegatron and Luxshare had taken about 10% of Pro-series orders from Foxconn, with mass shipments from those manufacturers not expected until late December at the earliest. That timing was an analyst estimate, not independently verified production data. The often-repeated claim that Zhengzhou represented 60–70% of global iPhone production is likewise a secondary estimate, not an Apple statistic.

Supply shortage, delayed demand or lost demand?

The strongest evidence supports a supply-constrained holiday quarter. Apple explicitly said demand remained strong while capacity fell. That creates three different outcomes:

  • Unfilled demand: a customer wants a Pro model but cannot obtain it promptly.
  • Deferred demand: the customer waits and buys when supply improves.
  • Lost demand: the customer abandons the purchase or switches to another phone.

Kuo argued that some holiday demand could disappear rather than be deferred, particularly during an economic slowdown. That was his judgment, not a result Apple confirmed. The available statements cannot establish how many purchases were delayed, canceled or redirected to other models.

Why the Pro shortage mattered to Apple’s revenue

The affected phones were Apple’s premium launch products. Apple’s September 2022 announcement listed U.S. starting prices of $999 for iPhone 14 Pro and $1,099 for iPhone 14 Pro Max, with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations. See Apple’s launch announcement.

Because Pro models carry higher prices than standard iPhones, a shortage could hurt the quarter’s revenue mix even if some customers bought less expensive models instead. Kuo reportedly forecast that fourth-quarter iPhone revenue might be 20–30% or more below market consensus. That was a forecast, not a reported outcome. Multiplying 20 million by a retail price would not produce Apple’s lost revenue: the unit figure was a forecast gap, retail prices are not Apple’s net receipts, and some sales could have shifted into a later period or another product.

What the shortage meant for holiday buyers in late 2022

Apple warned that the Pro models would be harder to find during the holiday season. Delivery windows could lengthen, preferred colors or storage capacities could sell out, and orders placed late could miss Christmas. Availability was not necessarily identical across countries, channels, configurations or retailers.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Options available to a buyer at the time

  • Keep the order: sensible if ProMotion, the Pro camera system, Dynamic Island, Always-On display or the A16 chip was essential and the buyer could tolerate an uncertain date.
  • Change color or storage: a different configuration might arrive sooner, at the cost of the preferred specification.
  • Choose iPhone 14 or 14 Plus: potentially easier to find, but not equivalent in camera hardware, display features or processor generation.
  • Check carrier and authorized-reseller stock: another channel might have inventory unavailable from Apple, though financing, activation, warranty and return terms required review.
  • Buy refurbished or used: this could solve availability or price problems, but battery health, carrier lock, repair history, warranty and returns became important.
  • Wait for the next generation: avoiding launch scarcity, but giving up immediate use and accepting the possibility of another launch-period shortage.

Those choices describe the late-2022 buying window. They should not be read as current 2026 pricing or inventory guidance.

The broader supply-chain lesson

The episode exposed the vulnerability of a manufacturing system optimized for scale and tightly synchronized launches. Apple depended on a concentrated Chinese assembly footprint, a small number of suppliers and specialized lines, while China’s then-active COVID policies could affect an entire complex. A localized production shock therefore became a global retail problem within weeks.

Kuo argued that Apple might diversify Pro-series assembly and reduce Foxconn’s exclusivity in later generations. That was a forward-looking analyst interpretation, not proof that a strategy change had already been completed.

What remains unknown

  • The final Q4 2022 shipment count for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
  • The exact number of units Apple could not ship because of the Zhengzhou disruption.
  • How many customers bought later, switched models or abandoned purchases.
  • Apple’s precise revenue impact from the production shortfall.
  • Whether every market, color and capacity experienced the same delivery delays.

Bottom line

The iPhone 14 Pro shortage was a genuine manufacturing and supply problem, not evidence that demand had collapsed. Apple confirmed reduced Zhengzhou capacity, strong demand, lower shipments and longer waits. The “20 million fewer” figure came from Kuo’s Q4 2022 estimate for combined Pro and Pro Max shipments against an earlier forecast. It was not an Apple-confirmed final shipment number, and it cannot by itself be called 20 million lost sales.
